Title: Gould marriage in Tenby in 1813?
Post by: Dalwhat on Saturday 26 May 12 12:53 BST (UK)
Hi folks.

I'm trying to research the maiden name of a Mary who married a James Gould in Tenby in 1813. The IGI database lists a marriage in 1813 but there is no record of Mary's maiden name. I'm hoping that the reason is the investigator just couldn't read the name. Does anyone have access to the parish register that lists the event and could help me out? I have no information on Mary prior to her marriage. James however was born in Ilfracombe in Devon and they initally went back to live in Padstow, Cornwall, for a time before returning to Tenby for good in the 1820s. James was born on or around 1789 to Richard Gould and Ann Salmon and the family were shipbuilders hence the meandering between the West Country and Pembs.

If anyone could provide me with an indicator of Mary's name or family I would be really grateful. Thanks in advance for any assitance.

Mike

Hi Mike,
That is a Submitted Record of a Marriage so 1813 may not be correct at all. It is a guess by the Submitter given the Childrens Christenings they have found.

Although at this stage I am unable to find the Marriage Mary may be nee HAYES/HAY/HAYS
DAVID HAY Gould, 15 Feb 1832, Tenby, Pembroke, Wales
And in Cornwall;
MARIANNE HAYES Gould, 08 July 1819, Padstow, Parents JAMES/MARIANNE, Father Shipbuilder

Hopefully someone esle can come up with more for you :)

Thanks Trish. I was thinking Hays may have been an option given two of the children have this as a middle name.

I wasn't aware of the procedures used by the IGI regarding "submissions" thanks for that  :)

Your welcome Mike.
Yes the IGI has Submitted Records or Parish Records which are transcribed from the original ones.

If you look at James Goulds Christening on the IGI, 13 Sept 1789 you will see at the bottom is has Messages, Extracted.... and a Batch No.

Parents only appear with the introduction of Civil Registration in Sept 1837 in Mrge Certificates, they do not appear on Parish Register entries prior to that date. I will have a look at the witness, which may suggest something.

Banns of mrge between James Gould and Mary Hay both of the parish of Tenby St Mary in the County of Pembroke where published on Sundays Aug 25th, Sept 1st and Sept 8th 1811.
James Gould of the parish of Tenby St Mary and Mary Hay of the same parish where mrd in St Mary by banns on the 14th Sept 1811 in front of S. Richards. Both signed their names in the presence of David Hay and Diana Wilkin.

Tenby St Mary Baptism
04 Apr 1792 Mary to David and Mary Hay a Mariner baptised

There is no reference to the surname Gould in Tenby 1784 to 1796, therefore James must have only been in Tenby for the minimum of 6 weeks to be of that parish at mrge.

I wonder if the will of David Hay of 1798 and St Issells is related to your research.

There is mention of the Gould surname over in Llanstadwell and Hubberston area, so perhaps he is an incomer from that area to Tenby.

I think the Goulds hailed from the West Country and seemed to flit between locations probably due to business / work. Thanks for the work Oriel, much appreciated.

Hi Mike

I know a old post but i have done the Gould side of the research and got back to around 1600's in Ilfracombe. James Gould his Father was a master mariner. Just researching now into ships he sailed in. Would be good to exchange information.

Thanks
Anna
