Title: Tasman Sotheran
Post by: 64aussie on Tuesday 29 May 12 04:10 BST (UK)
I am researching my grandfather Tasman Sotheran, who I know was living in Fresno California in approximately 1930. He was born in Tasmania Australia in 1895 and is known to have worked as a steward on board immigrant ships. Does anyone have any information on either Tasman or any descendents.  He shows on the 1930 California census as being married to Glee Esther Carlisle.  I have not been able to locate any children from this marriage, or from a previous marriage that I know of for Glee.
Any information would be most appreciated.
Cheers

Do US death certificates name children?

Glee's death is shown as:
Glee Esther SOUTHERAN born 16 Feb 1893 Ohio, father's surname CARLISLE, mother's surname BUZZARD. Glee's death 16 Apr 1949 Fresno.

Was his correct name Aubrey Tasman SOTHERAN by any chance? If so, he married Mary CAMERON in Tasmania in 1916. I could find only one electoral roll entry for a Mary SOUTHERAN and that was in Launceston Tasmania in 1928 and she was the only SOUTHERAN at the address. Mary sued him for divorce in 1926.
See: http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/51360529?searchTerm=sotheran&searchLimits=sortby=dateAsc%7C%7C%7Cl-title=68 for the story

I found a marriage story for 1949 quoting a son of the "late" A SOUTHERAN and Mary (now Mrs R Warren). As this son might still be alive I will forward the details via PM but only if you can confirm that I am on the right track.

I am on the right track. Just found the 1919 Tasmanian electoral roll where he is calling himself Tasman Aubrey SOUTHERN  and describes himself as a "steward" - so he is your guy. The son mentioned in my last post must have been quite young when Tasman left him and Mary behind.

Hi Sandra, thank you so much for your prompt replies.  Aubrey Tasman Sotheran is the Grandfather of my friend.  She is signed up to Ancestry but hs not so far tried searching through Rootschat.  She was here today with me so we decided to look for Aubrey through Rottschat.  I have just spoken with her on the telephone and today is definately ancestor day for her as she also received in the mail a copy of Glee's death certificate.  My friend's name is Ann Sotheran.  Her main line of enquiry is attempting to discover what happened to her Grandfather after he settled in USA.  The family believe he lived in California, and his wife Glee's death certificate confirms this, stating that she had lived in Fresno for 25 years, it also states that she was a widow at the time of her death.  Her address was 1843 Terrace Ave. Fresno.  Despite a fair amount of searching Ann has not been able to find any trace of her Grandfather at all in USA so any help would be most appreciated.
Cheers  Sue Collett  Tasmania  Australia.

If you or your friend have a library near you, that have ancestry library edition, there is microfilm available for California deaths between 1905 - 1994. It looks like Tasman died in 1939 according to the City Directories so that could be worth following through.

Good evening again Sandra, thank you so much for all this wonderful information.  Ann has been looking for such a long time for information regarding the death of her Grandfather and information concerning his life in America.  I will see her again tomorrow and at that time I will pass on to her all of the information that you have forwarded to me.  I'm sure she will be on line herself tomorrow to thank you and she will certainly follow up your leads re the date and place of death of her Grandfather.  By the way, as you might have guessed, Aubrey's son, who you mentioned earlier, was my friend Ann's father.  Sadly he has now passed away and he was never comfortable talking about his father so that Ann learned very little about that side of her family.
Cheers once again, Sue Collett

Hi 64917082

Must be confusing for you to have 2 researchers called Sandra  ;)

Also worth keeping an eye on http://raogk.wikia.com/wiki/California incase there is a volunteer who could help you.  The new RAOGK site is still under construction but the wiki one is a temporary measure in the meantime.

Good Luck
Sandra  ;D

Hi Sue,

Another thought, if you have the state and enumeration district for the 1930 census, the link below will convert that to the 1940 Census equivalent. So you may be able to find Esther if Tasman had already dies by that date.  ???

Looking at just Glee for the moment, possible 1920 census entry for Glee E LAW born c1894 Ohio, husband John D LAW born c1890 Ohio, Mary E LAW c1918 Ohio and Donald S LAW c1920 (aged 1 month) - living at Bucyrus Ward 2, Crawford, Ohio. By 1930 John is transcribed as John W and there are 2 more children.

The other Sandra  ;D

Another double thanks Sandra ladies.  I can see my friend Ann spending some eye opening time checking out all the links that you are posting for her.  We are both fairly new to ancestor searching and are constantly amazed at not only the information available, but also all the good people out there who are prepared to give time and attention to helping the likes of us.
Cheers to you both Sue Collett

Good evening again ladies, thank you all so much, I have passed on all your information to Ann Sotheran, and I have suggested she log in to Rootshcat so that she can thank you herself.  I know she also has some more questions that you might be able to help her with.  I also have a question for my previous contact - both Ann and I had searched several times on Family Search for Tasman and had not been able to find anything.  It would seem from your link that this is where you found the record of Tasman's death.  Can you give me any hints for looking on that web page as perhaps I am not searching correctly. I would also be interested to find the record on Family Search as some of the smaller print on the link was too small to read and a bit fuzzy when you enlarged. I thought it might be clearer if I could find the entry in Family Search.  Must add that Ann had been in touch with the records offices in California in search of the date of death of her Grandfather and they came back to say there was no trace of his death in the state.  Congrats to everyone and many thanks.

Hi again ladies, just a general question please - I am gradually finding my way around this page, but I don't seem to be able to find my posts and their replies once I have either sent or read them.  The only way I can get them back is to go into the search field and enter the subject again.  The help page does not seem to give any advice so any help would be appreciated.
Cheers  Sue Collett

Hi Sue,

All the city directory entries for Tasman came from a subsciption site.

If you go to the side margin and click on your 64917082, it will take you to your profile page on another screen, which at the bottom will give you a choice which includes  "Show the last posts of this RootsChatter" - hope this helps.

Great. It doesn't matter what the question is, where it is family history, something technical about the computer, there is always somewhere to post your query and someone will come up with an answer to help you.  ;D

Hello Girls, This is Annie Sotheran extending a big thank you and sending good karma to those who provided me with information on my grandfather, Tasman Sotheran.  I had been searching for information on him for such a long time and to finally have concrete evidence of his place and time of death was just wonderful.  Now, I need a little more help please - I had already been in touch with Department of Public Health, Vital Records, California and asked them to search their records for me.  They came back to me with a "No result found" and took all my pennies !!!! I do believe the time frame and the location that I asked them to search through was correct.  Have any of you ladies had any experience of this?  Can I or should I be in touch with the Department again and ask them to provide the info. at no cost.  I still have all the contact details and can even telephone them if necessary.  I am also really interested to find the record myself on Family Search.  I have tried several times but must be not looking correctly.  Can you give me some help here please so that my future searches might be more successful  ??   Thanks again ladies, and now that I have somewhat mastered this little old Rootschat page I will probably spend the rest of my days talking to you all !!
cheers to everyone  Annie Sotheran.

You're welcome!  Family Search just has the index of California deaths, so there's not a full record on there.  The link that I gave above should bring you to the right page of the index, and he's listed on the farthest column on the right.  I think the problem with the state finding the record might have been that his last name was spelled Southeran on the index rather than Sotheran.  I don't know if they'd give you the record for free now, but I guess it might be worth checking.
