I'm looking for information on Joseph Danks & Clara Wilson who married in Stockton, NSW in 1891. I know Clara was the daughter of James & Sarah Wilson & she was born in 1870, Higham, England. She came from England in 1886 with her parents & siblings aboard the "Aberdeen". I can't find any other info on Joseph apart from the fact that he died in 1930 at Newcastle aged 64 yrs. I would like to know what happened to Joseph & Clara & whether they had children, when Clara died, & who his family was, etc. I would appreciate any help in this regard.

I will have another look at this record. I can't find any death notices for Clara, but maybe Joseph did remarry or Joseph may have been the son though can't find any other birth records for Clara & Joseph other than Annis in 1893. I will check what is on the war records for family, etc. I do know that the previous suggestions regarding Annis being married to Leslie Harman aren't the Danks I am looking for as the ages don't work out right for this Annis. So I am still looking into this, but at this stage may still have a dead end.
Thank you for your suggestion. I will follow it up & see where it leads me.

If she was the Aunt of the MARGETTS children then she must be related to Annis, not Jack CURTIS.
The burial record says that she was aged 70 ???

Annie SL HARMAN and husband Lislie HARMAN can be eliminated.
Ryerson Index has their ages as 86yrs (at 1998) and 80ys (at 1994)
How has Clara Wilson m. Joseph Danks been identified as daughter of Sarah and James, arrived 1886 Sydney.
Do you have this NSW marriage certificate please?.
If you can give details of Clara's siblings...names, marriages... it might be possible to find reference to Clara if she is noted in death notices etc.
Same with Sarah and James Wilson, her parents.
Do you have their death details please.
-
Clara was eldest daughter of James Wilson (a coal miner from Barnsley, England) & Sarah Gledhill (Bn England). The family emigrated to Australia arriving April 1886 in Sydney with their children: Clara, Amelia, Joseph, George & Arthur. George was my gt grandfather. James & Sarah were married in the June Qtr of 1870 at Barnsley. Clara married Joseph Danks at Stockton (where family ended up after emigrating) in 1891 & as per NSW BDM had 1 daughter Annis in 1893 at Stockton. This is as far as I have been able to get with this line.
Thankyou to all you amazing people with what you have come up with so far today. I truly stand in awe. That certainly give me some more to continue on with.

I noticed that Annis DANKS mentioned in the snip was from Menzies on the goldfields of WA. If she is Joseph and Clara's daughter perhaps Joseph was a miner and moved to WA when gold was discovered in 1894.
Frederick Thomas MARGETTS was a barman at Menzies on the 1906 and later electoral rolls. His wife was shown an Annie on the electoral rolls to 1931.
Many of the DANKS in WA on the indexes appear to be descendants of John DANKS and Ellen KELLEHER however I noticed the birth of a Clara in 1906 in the district of North Coolgardie. Unfortunately post 1905 births in WA do not details parents.
I wonder how often Annis was transcribed as Annie.

Joseph DANKS was a MINER :)
The 1903 NSW ERoll shows him living at North St, Stockton NSW.
Clara is not listed with him, but as it was not compulsory to vote could be the reason why.

Clara wouldn't have been old enough to vote in 1903...born 1893. Many women didn't enrol to vote anyway.

Hi Vicki,
Well, we do not quite know where CLARA finally ended up.
A couple of notes of interest......
She is not mentioned at all in her daughters' deaths etc. One wonders why.
If you do not have evidence to the contrary, I would suggest that the A initial CLARA's name was for ANNIS.
The 1881 census places her in the vicinity of this birth which tallies with other age details and makes a logical choice for her own daughter's name.
Births Mar 1873 WILSON, Clara Annis
Dewsbury

Knowing this may help in your further searches.

Hi Sue
You could be right. I have her place of birth as Higham, Yorkshire, but this is only about 10k from Dewsbury.
Higham is also listed for her sister Amelia & brother Joseph while George (my great grandfather) was born in Carlton & younger brother Arthur in Barnsley.
A couple of days ago all I knew about Clara once she arrived in Australia was that she married Joseph Danks & had a daughter Annis & that was the end of the info I had. Now I know she remarried & that she died in 1973 in WA.
Thank you

Hi Vicki,
You do have alot to absorb and collate. It can be a bit much at times, I know ;) :)

The death in 1973 was not for CLARA A (nee Wilson) it was her daughter ANNIS,

Thanks Sue,
You're right. I've mixed her up with daughter Annis. So I still need to find when Clara died!

Hi Vicki,
My great grandmother was Clara Ann Wilson. She married Joseph Danks on 28 November 1891 at Stockton NSW. On the marriage certificate it states that Joseph was 24yrs and Clara was 22yrs. Joseph was a miner. Clara was born on 14 May 1870 in Barnsley UK and died, aged 69yrs, on 30 June 1939 at East Freemantle. Clara and Joseph had two children together - Annis Wilson, born in 1893 at Stockton NSW, and Ada Wilson born 1888. Joseph was listed as the father on Annis' birth certificate, but Ada's has father as unknown, although it is believed to be Joseph also. I have quite a lot of information on Clara's family and marriage, baptism, birth certificates (copies) from her parents etc. I do not have a great deal on Joseph Danks as yet. Clara went on to live with John McGowan after leaving Joseph, though it appears Clara and John never married. They had two children, my Grandmother - also Clara, and a daughter Maggie, who died at the age of 16yrs. They resided in Western Australia, mainly the goldfield area around Kalgoorlie and Boulder. John McGowan died 17 January 1910, and his last years have quite a detailed story. I have many records around this also. If you are able to tell me what information you need, I can pass all I have onto you. Like I said, I am not sure if you are interested in Clara's side of the family, or the Danks side. I hope this is helpful to you, and let me know if I can assist you with what I have already. Cheers, Jenny.
-
Hi Jenny
Thanks for your reply. Your great grandmother Clara & my great grandfather George were brother & sister. Before I started this journey our family did not know much about the Wilson side at all. I now know that George had 2 sisters & 2 brothers. My Aunty & my Father's cousin actually gave me the task of looking into the family history & it has been interesting so far.
I knew that Clara did not stay with Joseph & found a newspaper artice from 1900 in the Kalgoorlie Miner that showed she obtained a separation from Joseph Danks on the grounds of bodily fear & cruelty. From what I can gather Joseph went back to the Newcastle area in NSW.
I have found some info on Clara's brothers & their families & little bit about Clara. I have found marriages for Ada & Annis, but nothing about your grandmother Clara so anything about her would be greatly appreciated. I did not know about Maggie. Any more info you can give me about her would be good too.
Yes, I would be interested to hear about John McGowan too.Any info you have about Clara's parents James & Sarah would be very helpful too. I also have very little on Clara's sister Amelia apart from her marriage to Leonard Smith in 1915 at Merewether, NSW. I have looked into the Gledhill side of things & have managed to get back to late 1600s but can only get back to 1800s for the Wilsons.
Do you have any photos from the Wilsons, etc? If you want any info on the brothers let me know & I will pass on what I have.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Vicki
