Some useful sites:
Misc old photos of London
http://www.photolondon.org.uk/gallery.htm - organised by London Borough
European Visual Archive - search by keyword or Browse Collections for London
This is a great and varied collection of historic photographs from famous landmarks to markets and cinemas to ordinary street scenes (note: site is a bit slow)

Hope you don't mind me adding another one!
http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/index1a.html
For old photos and history for South East London.

Ideal Homes is good - and it proved very useful for my son's local history project for school!
The EVA site is brill - but the search system is a real pain. For instance, if you search X High Street, you are likely to get everything with "street", let alone, "high" in the title, and all kinds of other stuff besides. On the other hand, some very specific searches result in zilch, but will be successful if approached "sideways" (if you know what I mean). Has anyone using the site noticed that most school lessons appeared to take place in the attic? - Artistic preference on the part of the photographers, I suspect
