Title: How to track a land sale in Shetland
Post by: RedMystic on Saturday 02 June 12 18:41 BST (UK)
Hi Chatters,

I received an e-mail this morning from a new found relative. He was speaking to another "cousin" who indicated that the family owned several islands in Shetland for "many generations" & sold them before they left Shetland between 1881 & 1891.

I'm aware of the Shetland family history website - Bayanne. It doesn't provide any hints that might help us solve this new mystery. Just for clarification, the reason we're interested in this subject is that we have had an old mystery as to where the heck the money came from for the generation of Inkster children born in Shetland between 1859 to 1881.

Can someone suggest how we might determine if the family did own several islands & sell them between 1881 & 1891?

Thank you in advance for any direction you can provide on how we might go about researching land ownership for our family.

Thank you Falkyrn. I've not quite figured out the search function to arrive at anything of value ... yet ..., but it sure looks interesting.

If you have the time RM,  http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/SCT-SHETLAND

Skoosh.

I've been mining this looking for an illusive Nicolson ancestor.

Thanks Skoosh. I'll take a look.

I was originally thinking the land would have transferred through the Inksters, but now I'm wondering if it (if it existed) was through Andrew Williamson (1797-1867) & Janet DerWent Moncrieff (1793-1867). Their daughter married our Inkster, & some in the family believe this branch of the family was somewhat welloff.

Good luck with your Nicolson search.

I realize I'm a bit late but the "Owners of Land and Heritages 1872-1873" is online if that helps you folks.  Every owner over an acre is listed.  In the ca 1770 version (which is not online), there is an Andrew Williamson in Braewick: Swinister listed having a value of 8 1/2 Merks. There are no other Williamson's listed.
