Title: Leslie A Jay b.1923 England
Post by: Chooch on Monday 11 June 12 10:54 BST (UK)
Can you please help with any information on Leslie A Jay said to have gone to Southern Rhodesia shortly after his marriage in 1954 to a Jean Cardwell.
He apparently returned to home roots in Cheshunt Hertfordshire about 1961 staying for about 3 months then supposedly returned to Rhodesia, no contact with family since.
Any help would be most appreciated.

hi
well i,ve been through the passenger records on FindMyPast and i can,t find them leaving in the 50,s the only one then is for an unmarried nurse even when i took out rhodesia and left destination blank nothing shows , so tried births using jay for father and mothers name cardwell no specific records show but all those that came up with numerous spellings of jay/ jayes and so on for germany one in malasia the indian continent but none for rhodesia or even south africa , so hopefully someone will find an incoming passenger record on ancestry but bear in mind that for outgoing passenger list it stops in 1960 as the argument is that more people were flying by then that records weren,t kept anymore same with in coming lists they cut off at 1960 .
regards

Hi Trevor
Thank you so much for your effort and time.  Leslie seems to have been a bit of a mystery, I'm wondering whether the Rhodesia story was actually correct although family members seem to be sure of it.

Thanks again
Pamela

hi pamela
it,s no problem that,s why we do this it keeps the little grey cells working , i,ve been having another look round and found a death for a jean jay, bristol glocs  1987, born 1 march 1934  vol22  page 480  reg no 687 now this is pure speculation wether it is your jean or not also looked for a leslie jay but couldn,t see one in find my past or free bmd .
now the other thing i should have thought of yesterday whilst running on about passenger records was the fact that although both incoming and outgoing passenger records cut off in 1960  it  is possible that leslie and jean flew to rhodesia in 1954 hence why there is no record for them it no doubt was more expensive but is  a real possibility .
i also did a google search for rhodesian records and zimbabwean but didn,t get far although there is this site www.lind.org.zw/genweb/index.htm have a look at it as there is a find a friend or relation section where you can leave a message as well as a gen web forum , see what you think .
best wishes

Hi Trevor, thanks again you have been most helpful.
I think you must be right about the flying to Rhodesia. The family member who passed this little mystery on to me only knew what I've already stated other than he thought he remembered Leslie telling his family in Cheshunt, Herts,  when he showed up in 1961, that he had a son but was going to divorce his wife Jean. Unfortunately I have no idea when this Jean was born or where but if they were divorcing I suppose it would be a possibility for her to return and live in Gloucs.
I will check out the site you kindly mentioned.

Thank you
Pamela

Hi I had some missing relatives living in Rhodesia, I put a notice on the Lind website, 18 months later a nephew contacted me and the rest is history. Good luck Derek.

If he was born in 1923, might he not still  be alive?  In which case...

Hi Derek and Mike
Thanks for your input. I've tried getting on the Lind site,  having hiccups but will try again and yes Mike the fact that he may still be alive is a possibility which means I have to be careful and not break any rules, (wouldn't want to do that).
Originally I was trying to find his travel info' but as it's been pointed out the period I'm looking at stopped being recorded and of course he may well have flown which means I won't find anything there.
I was hoping to confirm that he actually went back to Rhodesia for an elderly relative of his.
Thank you both for your interest
Pamela

Hi Chris

Unfortunately no I haven't got any further with Leslie and the information that I had about the Rhodesia angle came from a family member.
Where did your 'Jays' come from?

Regards
Pamela

Hi all

Not sure if I'm losing the plot or not but this morning on this board I received a message from 'Chris/CJay' enquiring as to whether or not I had any more information on Leslie Jay. My answer to Chris is on this board but his/her message has disappeared and I rec. notification that the subject has been moved - to 'Quarantine'. Can someone please explain to me what all this means.

Cheers
Chooch

Hi,
Jean and Leslie jay had a son in Rhodesia. Leslie left them, they returned to England. The son reached out to Leslie during his military time which came back "with no findings". The son has not seen Leslie since he was 7. Jean did remarry. The son went on to have a family of his own who grew up having family on only their mothers side as Jean passed before their birth.

I'd say Leslie seems to be a pro at disappearing. As for Cjay - I'd say it runs in the family...

Thank you for your reply.
This is indeed very sad, I hope Jean and her sons family found happiness though.

He does appear in a small family tree on ancestry.com. It appears to be the same Leslie that married a Jean Cardwell now deceased. It records their son Steve Leslie Jay and his family who seem to be based in Bucks.
I cannot find anything regarding Leslie Jay’s death or transit between Rhodesia and England.

Thank you for your interest and the information. I can only hope that Jean and Leslie's son and his family have a happy life.
My connection is through Leslie's mum ( Steve's grandmother) who was sister to my grandfather and the family always wondered what had become of them.

Hi, my daughter came across this and passed this to me.

I am Leslie and Jeans son, they divorced in 61 having moved to Mufulira, Rhodesia (Now Zambia, so that's North Rhodesia as was), myself and mum spent the next 6 years on our own then we flew back to UK and initially stayed with my granmother Jeans mum in Morecombe.

My mum remarried 'Arthur' in Whitehaven, Cumbria, then they divorced in about 82/83, then mum married again 'Alex' (unknown to me), he passed away mid 80's then mum passed away 87.

My main contacts where on my mums side, her gran and occasionally mums relatives in Cumbria, never knew much about the Jay's, i first ever saw a picture of my Dad in around early 80's me Gran gave me a picture of their wedding, i still keep it on cabinet with my wife's family pictures.

Hi Steve
Welcome to RootsChat and thank you for making contact and the information you provided.
If you would like I can fill you in somewhat on the Jay family, as I said your grandmother on that side was my grandfathers older sister and I can remember visiting her in Cheshunt Hertfordshire as a small girl.

If you would like to know more you need to place two more messages ( a total of three altogether ) on rootschat and then I can personal message you. They can be just a short reply to this message and one other.

My Gran did mention many years ago he had returned to Cheshunt or something like that, but i was not aware he had gone back to Africa, strange one that.
