Charles Beaumont appears in the UK Census.
1881 as 1yr old with parents William and Mary (possibly Carter) at 133 Henshaw St, Oldham.
1891 as 11yr old with parents William and Mary, at 12 Belmont St, Oldham.
1901 as 21yr old with parents William and Mary, at 12 Belmont St, Oldham.
1911 as 32yr old with wife Lily (Newboult) and 3 children.
However, it seems that the only matching records elsewhere report him as Charles Beaumont JONES.
e.g.
Births Sep 1879, Jones Charles Beaumont Oldham 8d 668
Marriages Dec 1901 Jones Charles Beaumont Oldham 8d 1101
Marriages Dec 1901 NEWBOULT Lily Oldham 8d 1101
There are several other records of his service and death in WW1, all using the surname Jones.
Is it possible to view his service record to confirm his parents ???
Can anyone explain this apparent use of two surnames, or were there in fact two different persons that I'm getting mixed. ??? ???
I cannot find any further record of William Beamont either, so perhaps elsewhere he is recorded as Jones too ???

There is a certificate on the www.cwgc.org website but unfortunately, it doesn't give the name of his wife or his address.
You should be able to get a copy of his service records and his next of kin should be recorded.
I am sure that someone on this site will point you in the right direction.

His marriage cert might help, giving his father's name and occupation.
-
Thanks for your replies, Radcliff
I believe the daughter Florence Martha lived only one year, and does not help solve the riddle of Charles two surnames.
It is interesting to see the name Jones as mother of Charles.
Does this confirm that the parents of Charles Beaumont Jones were not William Beaumont and Mary Carter?

Hi Heatherjulie,
Yes, that's one of the mentions of military service I had seen.
How could I get a copy of his service record which would show NOK?

Hi silvery,
It is really Charles Beaumont and his father William that I am trying to trace, and an explanation as to why so many of the references to Charles Beamont Jones seem to conflict with his - except perhaps the mention of mother as Jones as pointed out by heatherjulie.
I am very confused by this situation but feel there must be an explanation somewhere. ::)

Hi
I have just looked at the King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment) website and it says that only about 30% of the records exist.

On the censuses, both Charles and his father William were screw and bolt makers.
Have you managed to find William in 1911? When did he die?
Heather

Your man seems to appear in 4 trees on A*******
There is a photo of him.
On one of the trees his marriage is given as 4th October 1901.
Do you know if the family were members of a particular church?

The only way to solve your mystery is to buy the birth certificate of Charles Beaumont Jones
Charles Beaumont mother Jones,1879
William married to Mary Carter 1873,was she Mary Jones and married a Carter ,Oldham
or was Charles a relatives child
Heather states he is a bolt maker in the census returns,
Marthas baptism states her father is an iron works manager
Parents married in the registry office or registrar attended ceremony
so not in the Church of England
yes lots of conflicting information,
-
I agree Radcliff, the birth and marriage certificates are needed.
I was just wondering if they were methodists as there are some records at the Oldham Archives centre.

I have just read this message on another site
I am tracing my father's family. His father, Charles, was illegitimate born 30.6.1879 to Betty Jones. Brought up by his uncle William Beaumont and wife Mary as their son. Any information very much appreciated.
Is this your message? Or has it helped to solve the problem? ???

Spot on,
as I thought ,now to prove it,
-
So Charles is with them in 1881 as a 1 year old born Oldham
so if his mother had died that narrows the date range down
-
There is a death for a
Betty Jones 1879 Oldham aged 42
-
I could be way of the mark here, because of the time between marriage and possble birth of little Charles
St Mary Oldham
5th of Feb1843
Charles Beaumont x,full spinner bachelor of Oldham
Mary Barlow full spinster of Oldham
Grooms father Abraham Beaumont
brides father WILLIAM JONES
witness to marriage John Jackson and Abram Jackson
-
I think that one of Charles's children has the middle name Jackson
Richard Jackson Jones

Wow! Thank you Heather and Radcliff ;D
Funny thing, mulling over this problem in my sleep last night ::),
I wondered if the "mother's name Jones" might be a clue to an illegitimate birth and the child had been brought up by William and Mary as their own. I figured there must have been a close family connection between the mother and the Beaumonts for the child to have been given the Beaumont name.
Heather, the query is not mine, so thanks for finding it. ;D
I see it is dated 2005, so next step is to check if the email address of enquirer is still valid.
Hopefully I can make contact and all will be revealed.
Many Thanks

Hi
Hope you get a reply.
I have looked at the 1871 census for a Betty Jones in Oldham. There is one aged 5 so would make her about 13 when Charles was born. The thing that caught my eye was that a Jackson was a lodger at the house.
93 Main Road, Westwood, Oldham
Edwin Jones 38 Brickmaker
Alice Jones 36
Mary Ann Jones 11
Prudence Jones 9
Betty Jones 5 born Chadderton
Sarah Jones 1
Daniel Jones 68 Boarder Watchman born Derbyshire
Hannah Jackson 33 BoarderCotton Winder born Middleton
Heather
added: Looks like Alice Heywood and Edwin Jones married 1857 Oldham
-
William`s sister Betty Beaumont married John Jones at St. Thomas Leesfield in 1854. I think it is this Betty who died in 1879 Oldham.
They can be found on the 1861 and 1871 census, but I can only find daughter Agnes (1868) living with her married sister Sarah in 1881 - no John or Betty. Looking at lancashirebmd their last child would have been an Emily born 1871. So did John die in the early 1870`s and Betty went on to have Charles with an unknown father? If Betty did die in childbirth there may have been some confusion when Charles`s birth was registered - it could have depended on who actually registered it.
Just my musings.

I am very interested in this thread as this is one of my brick walls. I have done lots of research on Charles Beaumont-Jones and am now looking to find his Father. I have taken a DNA test with Ancestry but would be happy to find out what the posters connection is.
