Title: Rooney, Glenade, Leitrim
Post by: mandypea on Wednesday 13 June 12 13:33 BST (UK)
I have Annie Rooney born 1896 in Diffreen, Glenade, Leitrim. I am trying to find her parents. Where would the registration district be so that I can get her birth certificate, please?

Diffreen townland is in Manorhamilton registration district.

Usually the best place to order certs is GRO Roscommon - regardless of district involved.

Do you have Annie's marriage cert ?

I presume you already have this census return ...  parents are shown as William and Anne.

  Rooney household 1901 - Diffreen townlad (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Leitrim/Glencar/Diffreen/1474009/)

This Annie is listed as age 9 - so born c1892...

Glencar is the electoral district. The civil parish is Killasnet.

wondering about the 'Glanade' reference... that's a separate Electoral District in Co. Leitrim, not the one that contains Diffreen townland.

Hi Mandy /Shane

I was looking at Glenade as opposed to Diffreen - oops but I shall post this just in case

This is all the Anne Rooney's in Glenade on the 1901 census with a 5 year age radius to take into account errors.

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0nk9/

There area a LOT of Anne Rooney's from this time frame on familysearch.

Please bear in mind though that there are a lot of Mary Anne / Margaret Anne combinations on familysearch too.

You will most likely need her marriage cert to be certain whether you have the correct birth cert.

Thanks Shane, this is a new branch to my tree and the info came from the gt grandaughter of Annie. I am not at all familiar with Leitrim, I will ask again about the birth of Annie. I have seen the 1901/1911 census.
What I am actually looking for is a birth record so that I have the info to order a cert.
(as far as I know Annie never married, but had a son Charles Joseph Rooney)

unfortunately the details dont quite add up yet - if you are certain about the location being Diffreen townland, then the one I listed is the best match... but the year of birth is c1892, not 1896.

The Glenade reference possibly suggests a slightly different area...

Hi Mandy,

Some of my hubbie's family originated from nearby in Gortnagrelly and in Corglass. As the areas you mentioned are quite close to the Sligo borders it can make things very tricky to work out.

It is quite sparesly populated there and very beautiful, BUT going by the census there are a LOT of Rooney's in the area (and still are going by forums on other sites).

I think without more definite info on Annie, you might be chasing the proverbial needle in a haystack.

Do you have her son's birth cert - to be positive that she wasn't married, it MIGHT be possible that she married another branch of Rooney's.

The info given to me is that Annie Rooney was born in Diffreen 1896, and died in a nursing home in Diffreen in 1986. Her death details are that she was unmarried and her family never knew her to be so. Thank you everyone for your input, I will keep trying!!

The annie rooney you are talking about here was my granmother,  Charlie her on was my father and he had 9 children of which I am one.  The rest of the information is accurate. Does any one know where to find articles on an incident that was heard in court  and may have been printed in newspapers from Glencar area around 1919?
