Title: Searching for Carter History
Post by: Carter84 on Thursday 14 June 12 21:36 BST (UK)
Looking to trace back some history on my family further than I've already found out. I know my ancestors came from Scotland sometime in the 1800's, they moved to New Brunswick and most stayed in Kent County there. (Canada). I am trying to find my Carter line further than this or occupations or I don't know..anything of the sort. Any Carter's around?

Hi Carter84,

Welcome to rootschat, hope we can assist you in your search.

Do you have any full names to assist the search. If you know their children's names,  sometimes they used the Scottish naming tradition, and this can also help. Have you an actual date of arriving in Canada?

Tom

I may. I have a Carter genealogy book at my Parents that show the first descendants names, I am hoping to go further back. I will find out. I'm sure there first names and date of landing will be in that book. I just want to find out further back, our history, occupations they may have had and maybe there still are relatives in Scotland that are part of my family today.

I know their names are Robert Carter and Mariam Carter (nee Kennedy).

June 17, 1784 -DOB-Robert Carter Born In Kirkcudbright County, Scotland
Robert was labourer at a Sawmill Farm

Mariam Kennedy April 1793 Scotland
June 18-1855 Kouchibouguac, New Brunswick(believe that's when they emigrated)
Mariam died at age 62

Children Born in the parish of Kirkcudbright County, Scotland
Agnus and Margaret first two children

Other children: Mary, Alice, May, Isabel and Robert

I am seeing to find out information before they emigrated to Canada, see how far I can go back, or if there may be current living relatives from the same descendants as me. Hope this helps. Much more information.

A welcome from me as well  :)

18th June 1855 would appear to be Mariam's death date
This online tree may give an idea of the information that has already been found -

Wow thank you. Is there anything before them? I know the book I have only posts up to me and my siblings. Some dates are wrong and my children and siblings children are not added. Anyone have this family tree lined down? I can add information to it. My grandfather was Hugh Robert Carter and grandmother was Annie Carter (was previously married to a Graham-he died in WWII) then married my grandfather. Her maiden name was MacDonald.

Their children were Baptised in the parish of Rerrick, Kirkcudbright

They are listed on the OPR's on Scotlandspeople

OPR's are Old Parish Records of the Established Church of Scotland which recorded events of Baptism, marriage and death prior to statutory registration of 1855. They are incomplete as there was no requirement by law at that time to record events and many that were recorded no longer exist.

You can check them on the pay per view site www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
