Title: Silvanus Pike ca 1790 - 1878
Post by: emm1473 on Saturday 16 June 12 14:09 BST (UK)
I am looking for information on Silvanus Pike who I believe may have been married to Ann Doe.  I have Silvanus on the 1861 and 1871 census (born Brimpton, Berkshire) and I have his death certificate but other than that can find no trace of his parentage.   Silvanus was my 4th great grandfather so I would be very grateful for any help in tracing this line
Thanks
Emma

Try searching Hampshire too. 1871 census shows Hants, not Berkshire as the county.

Hi Emma

Something to ponder...

The 1861 census (aged 69y) suggests he was b. abt. 1792.

Source, Family Search:
30 Jun 1815 Septura d. of Sylvanus Pike & Ann Doe, Hungerford, Berks., bap.
They were baptising children up to 1829 in Hungerford, then, possibly moved to Hampshire:
29 Mar 1835 Rebecca d. of Sylvanus Pike & Ann Doe, Hurstbourne Tarrant, Hants., bap.

Source, IGI (extracted record):
12 Aug 1809 Thomas Hetchener & Ann Doe, Finchampstead, mar.

Source, IGI (submitted record):
20 Sept 1817 Thomas Wigmore & Ann Doe, Bucklebury, mar.
IGI (no source info):
4 March 1789 Anne Doe d. of William Doe & Mary, Blewbury, Berks., (now Oxford.), bap. (a hotbed of Doe's in the PR's)
IGI (extracted record):
Oct 1797 Ann Doe d. of William Doe & Hannah, Padworth, bap.

Sylvanus is a real mystery, the census returns suggest he was b. in Berks., but looks as though was living in Hants. after 1829.
Ann Doe isn't easy to pin down either, not short on leads, but difficult to associate with Sylvanus in marriage, apart from the children.

Hope there maybe something that clicks.

Regards
Geoff

HI Emma

further to Geoff's reply;

Nothing found in the BFHS Berkshire marriage index v1  & nothing found in the HGS 1754- 1837 Hampshire marriage index but from the HGS 1813-1841 Baptism Index

4 Nov 1821 Ringwood, Hants Louisa Pike d/o Selvania & Ann

29 Mar 1835 Hurstbourne Tarrent: Rebecca Pike d/o Silvanus & Ann: Born in Parish of Speen - Travellers

If they did formally marry then it could be it was in Wiltshire

Hi

Interesting find from, Paul, especially the traveler point, perhaps accounts for their elusiveness in some areas.

There is an interesting site > http://www.thegypsypoet.co.uk/gypsy_memories.html you may like to read. It mentions the Doe's, though not Ann specifically from what I can see, or indeed Pike. It confirms their travel routes in Berks, Hants, Dorset & wilts etc.

Another point of interest was that occasionally, if a traveler had died from an accident say, it wouldn't be unusual to bury the body in a secret place, it also mentions private burial areas - not good news for family researchers!

It is not difficult to see how Sylvanus got his name, with other names such as Augustus.

It may be worth turning your research to the traveler people to go any further back.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff and Paul.  Yes Silvanus was definitely a traveller and his daughter Rebecca was married to my 3rd great grandfather Jabez Buckland.  The Bucklands have been relatively straightforward to trace.  I have had some success with the Does (they appear further down my tree as well) but I just can't seem to trace the Pikes - its as if they didn't exist prior to 1861.  The one thing I do know about Romanies is they often changed their names - I have tried searching under Silvanus and excluding the Pike (figuring there can't have been that many people in the world that were called Silvanus) but to no avail.

I appreciate your help
Kind regards
Emma

Emma,

On FamilySearch there is this baptism at Collingbourne Kingston, Wilts:

20 Nov 1831 Honnor PYKE dau of Sylvanus & Anne

It looks as if she might have married as Hannah:
(1) 1Q 1851 PIKE Hannah / GEORGE Charles Bradfield  6 199
(2) 4Q 1861 LONG Jacob / GEORGE Hannah  Basingstoke 2c 337

Silvenus PIKE is 'Father' with the latter pair in 1871 and Neptune PIKE is their lodger in 1891.

Marriage 30 Sep 1850 at Bentley, Hampshire
Neptune PIKE son of Silvanus
Jane BRADAWAY  dau of John
[I wonder if they were there for the hop-picking?]

26 Jul 1829 Noah PIKE son of Sillvanus & Anne bap Hungerford

Have you found the burial for Silvanus 1878?

Do you have the PIKE baptisms listed on the "Romanyjib" site for Silvanus and Ann ?

They commence in 1815 which suggests he was born in the 1790s

Hi Emma

I may have found a clue to a surname switch to pursue at Hampshire Record Office:

Ref. No. 63M83/B1/367  Draft abstract of title [of executrix of Neptune Pike otherwise Neptune Pike Smith of Pamber, hawker] to cottage and 2r 5p of garden ground, Forest Lane, Pamber.  Mar 1934

This probably ties in with FreeBMD Death Jun 1931 PIKE  Neptune  71  Basingstoke  2c 247, who could be the son of Noah/Susanna PIKE at Brimpton 1861?

Emma,

Sylvanus' son Noah Pike (baptised 26 July 1829 Hungerford) is on my husband's tree.  He married Susanna Williams which is the line I have been tracing.  I have also found it difficult to trace back as they travelled so much that they could have been baptised pretty much anywhere!

I have also come across Bucklands, Hicks and Blacks - all travellers/Romanies etc.  If you think I have something which might help you then let me know and I'll dig out my paperwork.

Monique :-)

I am trying to find if anybody has any photos or certificates relating to Silvanus Pike.  I believe he is my 4th Great Grandfather.  I have photos of his Great Grandaughter Susan Pike (with husband William Frankham) plus their wedding certificate so am happy to swap.

Please get in touch I would love to hear any info you have.

Many thanks
