My mam signed up with the public library of northern ireland and i use her details to log onto the website etc. However, she was told that i would be able to search old newspaper archives ie derry journal etc from years back but i can only seem to find ones dating back to the 1990s.
Does anyone know how to search old newspaper archives on the ni libraries website (mainly derry ones as far back as they allow), or is there another way of doing this? I have emailed the guy at the library she signed up to and he cannot understand why i cannot access them. Is there something i am not doing right...?
I cannot go to places in person as i currently do not live in ireland.
-
It's quite possible you cannot access the online resources because you are not in Ireland and these resources are for people resident in N.I. Their website lists several online collections but I don't see the Derry Journal listed.

The guy who works for the library knows I'm in Scotland but is under the impression I should be able to view old archived newspapers.
Would I be right in thinking the only other way of viewing archived newspapers for northern Ireland would be in person ie in Ireland and not online. Shame if that is the case...
-
Did you look at the library link I just posted?
-
I did, thank you for the link. It allows you look at the Belfast telegraph, Irish times etc but they are from the 1990s onwards.
I was wondering if there were archives of older newspapers ie pre 1950?
Or am I being incredibly stupid and not seeing the tree for the forest, if so Im really sorry :)
-
What's on the list is what is available and I don't even see the Derry Journal listed.
Unfortunately the Libraries NI website is very poorly designed and doesn't show holdings of newspapers for any library.
-
No, I didn't either. He told my mother I could view really old archived newspapers, including the derry journal. I thought I was going a bit barmy as I have been all over the site and cannot find either really old newspapers or the derry journal.
I think the lad has obviously made a mistake. That's too bad. Ah well ::) ::)
Thanks for your help aghadowey.

It appears that Magee University has the Derry Journal back to 1772 as well as other titles such as Londonderry Sentinel, Londonderry Guardian and Londonderry Standard on microfilm but that doesn't help solve the on line access issue.

i think that the central Library in Derry has copies of the Derry Journal but they are not on line you have to go to the library to see them. I hope to call in next week so i might be able to update you on that/

Just looked at the libraries northern Ireland site and while you can get the Derry journal it seems it is only available from 2009 online- However there is also an academic sign in to Nexus Lexus (I don't know this system) so maybe you should e-mail the library and check if you need different sign in details before you can access the archived newspapers.

Hi,
Central Library in Derry has no online newspapers relating to what years you are seeking. They do have microfilms for the Derry Journal, Derry Standard, Londonderry Sentinel and Irish News.
My-Irish-Family, if you have dates that I could look up for you?
-
Thank you to every one for their help, greatly appreciated.
DoireM, I didn't have a specific date in mind, I was hoping to look for any Ross family from the Enagh Lough area from 1900 to 1955, unfortunately that is too big a time frame to request help from someone to have a look. If you were going back, one date that comes to mind is between 1949 july when my great grandfather passed away and 1951 jan when my great great grandfather passed away. They were called James Ross and Thomas Ross respectively.
Many thanks for any help you can give me, living in Scotland makes things slightly harder.
Regards

Will have a look for you when I am in the library next week.
-
Hello,
I checked the Derry Journal and Londonderry Sentinel for July 1949 and January 1951. Sorry no death records found in these newspapers.
-
Thank you for that DoireM,
That's a shame, but it was a long shot. They were quite a rural farming family and so far I've found nothing about them in newspapers yet, so it doesn't surprise me.
Thanks again!

You are welcome. :)

To My-Irish Family are you still there?
A friend in Ireland just sent me a snippet from the Londonderry Sentinel dated 1867 and I wondered if I could access the archives online myself which this series of posts has answered. (Not from NZ).
However I was struck by the list of names along with Ross in your family. My Dougherty family were from Coolkeeragh which is next door to Enagh Lough. One daughter Catherine married John Lowther. The Colhouns are also related to the Doughertys though I haven't pinned down exactly how.
Thomas Thompson was the Presbyterian Minister at Glendermott during some of the time I am interested in.
THOMAS THOMPSON; born Agivey, Garvagh, 17th May, 1841; brought up in connection with the congregation of Aghadoey; Education, M.C.D.; General Certificate 1868; licensed Coleraine Presbytery 1870; ordained 1st Glendermott 16th January, 1872; married (1) 1872 daughter of William Thompson, Gortin, Aghadoey; retired 1910. Died 1st June, 1916.
Cheers
Linda (NZ).

Rev. Thompson was born at Glasgort, Agivey (Agivey isn't in Garvagh). Are you researching the The Thompson family or just mentioning him because of the Glendermott connection?
-
Thomas Thompson was the executor of a couple of the Dougherty wills so I got his bio from somewhere to explain who he was. Not any relation that I know of, just that my family were Presbyterian from Glendermott.
The originator of this thread does include Thompson in their list of families though, which is why I mentioned him.
I also have just seen a Nixon Ross Lowther b1872 son of James Lowther and Sarah Hunter who may also be of interest to the original poster. James Lowther was I think the son of James Lowther of Lisdillon and brother to John Lowther who married Catherine Dougherty.

Hi
On the subject of newspaper archives can anyone tell me how far back the Library archives goes for both Sentinel and Journal looking for info around 1890.

Attention -Kingskerwell
You mention have an archive of Londonderry Sentinel BMD's - would people who lived out in rural Tyrone put stuff in there? Or was there an Omagh newspaper?
I am looking for a Joseph McIver/McIvor born 1838 +/- one year whose parents were Daniel and ? of Brackey
and a Letitia LYONS parent Robert who was born c 1844 .
Joseph McIver and Letitia LYONS were married 27 Oct 1859 in Drumnakilly Church (Holy Trinity)
Thanks for any help you can give. The Irish family history is hard work and so many records were burned ...
-
Sorry Janet, I cannot find a record of either of them in BMD records. I can confirm your marriage date and church.
Regards
-
I will try a real gamble - I would love to find their parents marriages or even their births.
Joseph McIver is c 1838 with parent - Daniel
Letitia Lyons is c 1844 (she was only 15 at marriage) with parent Robert.
I have found absolutely nothing about mothers - possibly one is a Mary
Any help gratefully accepted.
-
Once again Janet, no marriages for the fathers' names in the Londonderry Sentinel.
Regards
-
thank you. It was worth a try. What about deaths for any of the family? Robert Lyons is possibly the 1886 one (October).
Is there a paper closer to Termonmaguick? That would more likely have something. My impression is that when you were 'out in the country' areas in Ireland in mid-1800's you were struggling to survive and so recording things and newspapers were far away even if physically they weren't far at all. Whereas in Aust/NZ there were far more BMD and ad's in papers at the same time
-
Many people in the countryside did not put obituaries in newspapers until c1900- instead some used printed cards (and earlier handwritten letters) to invite relatives and neighbours to attend a funeral. If a family didn't often read a newspaper they were unlikely to put notices in one.

? Administration of the estate of Robert Lyons late of Killyclogher County Tyrone Farmer who died 1 October 1886 granted at Londonderry to Robert Lyons junior Farmer. Probate granted 1906.

The townland is Termonaguirk- Omagh is the nearest town.

I now know that 'my' Robert LYONS and his wife Mary (either Johnston or Houston) died within 2 days of each other on 11 and 13 April 1872 and are buried in Drumnakilly -Holy Trinity. But probably too unimportant for newspaper notices.
