Title: 1841/1851 Ledbury Look up please
Post by: helxx on Sunday 22 May 05 20:15 BST (UK)
I'd really appreciate a look up on the following person please  :)

AUGUSTUS BRIMMELL

All I know is that he was born around 1836-1838 in Ledbury.  Unfortunately I can't find him on IGI as I'm desperate to know his parents names.

I am waiting for his marriage cert at the moment, so that will tell me his fathers name but I'd love somebody to find him on either (or both!) census', I have him 1861 onwards.

A lady on another site tried to find him on 1851 and did find him on the 1851 census index but couldn't find him on the census itself as her copy is faded in parts.

She found the following:

Augusta Smith BRIMMELL - 15 - Ledbury -( 1975 - 201a)

Any help at all would be fab!!!

Thanks very much
Helen x

Hello Helen,    :)

I see what you mean! the Ledbury 1851 Census page 201 is of very poor quality - I only managed to make out his name as I knew what I was looking for,   :-\  it only revealed that he was in service and not with the rest of his family, I did manage to find this Brimmell family though, on page 206a which looks very likely to be his -

1851

Wellington Heath, Ledbury

John S Brimmell    45   Head   M    Keeper          Herefordshire, Ledbury
Maria S    ''         44   Wife    M                               ''               ''
John S     ''         23   Son     Un   Ag. Lab                ''                ''
Esther S   ''         11   Daur                                    ''                ''
Harriet S   ''          8   Daur                                    ''                ''
William S   ''          6   Son                                     ''                ''
Sidney S   ''          3   Son                                     ''                ''
Samuel S   ''        9m  Son                                     ''                ''

Also, page 200a, -

Mary S Brimmell    18   Servant                       Herefordshire, Ledbury

I'll check on the 1841 Census and see if I can get them all together. It might take a little while though, as Ledbury covers quite a few pages.

All the best
Sue   :)

Sue,

Thanks so much for looking  :)

I believe that John and Maria are connected to Augustus somehow but still trying to work it out!  I've come across them before on later census'.

Re Augustus being in service, do you mean he's a servant, sorry if I'm being thick!

I'd really appreciate the look up in 1841 - there's no rush, but I can't wait either - fingers crossed!!

Best Regards

Hello again,

Wasn,t that difficult after all - they weren't that far in

1841

Homend Street, Ledbury

John Brimall       35    born in county - yes (no occupation given)
Maria Brimall      35        yes
John Brimall       13        yes
Mary Brimall       11        yes
Augusta Brimall   7         yes
Hester Brimall    1-6m     yes

                               (HO107/ 425/ 1/ p.19&20)

I think that clears up the relationship between them   :D   and yes, Augustus is described as "Servant" in 1851, one of 4 others.  I can't make out the names of the others in the household though, sorry.

Sue    ;)

Hi Sue,

You're a star!  ;D ;D ;D

I'm REALLY confused though now!

As I couldn't find a baptism on IGI for Augustus Brimmell, as the other lady on another site found him on the index as Augustus Smith Brimmell, I looked again on IGI.

I found an entry for an Augustus Brimmell in 1835, son of John and Maria Smith!  I can't get my head around it.......John Brimmell, and even Maria and all the children have the middle initial 'S' which makes me think they all stand for 'Smith'

I've also found a baptism on IGI for Esther Smith, again daughter of John and Maria Smith!!!

Hope I'm making sense!

I just can't figure out what it's all about.  Any ideas??

I'll post this on query on the help board if not as I know this is just a board for lookups!

Thanks again Sue, I really appreciate your time and help.

Best Regards

Hi Sue,

I think I've worked it out. Phew!!

I've looked for a baptism for John Smith and found one in 1806, Ledbury.

'John Brimmer Smith'

Son of Elizabeth Smith.

I'm guessing that Brimmer has been transcribed incorrect and should be Brimmell.  John was obviously illegitimate.  All his childrens baptisms would have to be in the name of 'Smith' as that is his name but he obviously chose to call  himself 'Brimmell' after his father's name.

Again I hope I'm making sense and I also hope I'm right with my hinch!

Hello Helen,

I think you could be on the right lines there, you need a very open-mind when viewing these records   ::)

Good luck with it.  I hope you find all your answers.

Helen,

Did you find this on the IGI?

John Bremell  abt. 1872
of Ledbury, Donnington

spouse - Elizabeth Smith
married - 11th June 1807
Ledbury, Donnington

It looks as though his parents married after he was born, hence the double-barrelled name.   :)

Goodnight, sleep well
Sue    ;)

Helen & Sue
I wonder if you could help me!!
I'm currently trying to trace my fathers family tree and have noticed you have Augustus Brimmell in your e-mails to each other.

According to an aunty of mine, Augustus Brimmell born circa 1836 in Wellington Heath, Ledbury is my Great Great Great Grandfather (I think thats enough greats)
He had  8 children i believe, which down the line a few generations led to me!

Do you think this might be the same person, I think he married someone called Hannah??
Many Thanks
Tracey

Hi Helen
Could you share details of that baptism? I've tried finding it on Ancestry and can't but he is my direct ancestor.  I had figured that he was born before their marriage but couldn't find any records.

Also, in relation to your earlier question on Augustus - I also can't work it out. The records that you and Sue have referred to actually seem to relate to Augusta - a female, not Augustus. If you check both the 1841 and 1851 census, the age is recorded for Augusta in the female column.
And I can't find any subsequent records for a male or female.  Have you been able to resolve it since your initial posts?
