Title: Help! Perth History!
Post by: Jerik24 on Tuesday 03 July 12 15:18 BST (UK)
Hi I have a couple of things I need help with! I am looking to speak to someone who knows a bit about the History of Perth.  I am currently doing my family tree and most of my family grew up in Perth (as did I) and I am very interested in hearing what Perth was like "back in the day" including Errol.  The years I am partically interested in are 1860 onwards really if anyone could help id love to have a chat with you.  Thanks in advance :)

I've always lived in Perth, b1969, and my mother (still alive) has also, b1934. Going further back, my family has been here since the 1850s. Ask away, I have loads of Perth books, etc if me or my mother don't know.

Hi Joe thanks for your reply.  Not sure where to start now.  My family lived in Ruthven Avenue (hunters) from 1938 to 1948 I havent seen any pictures of this so im not sure at all what it looks like ive tried the library but they dont have a picture of Ruthven Avenue do you know where I could get one from?

It's a small world. We also lived in Hunters. We moved in 1973 or 1974 when I was about 4 or 5 so I don't remember much. I'm sure it was Ruthven Avenue my sister lived in. If you go to McDonald Court in Fairfield, that's pretty much what was Ruthven Avenue was like but minus all the greenery and colour.

I don't have any pictures of Ruthven Avenue but I have one looking towards Hunters in the 60s which wil give you an idea of what the area looked like.

What a great picture Joe and thank you for the google map picture I know where you mean now ill need to take a wander down with my mum.  So was the white bridge always there or did that come later? I know from speaking to the archives dept that Ruthven Avenue was built in 1937ish I wonder if that was all of Fairfield that was built then? a new housing scheme perhaps?

I think the whole scheme was built in the 30s. It was always just known as "Hunters" or "Hunter's Crescent" although Hunter's Crescent was just one of the streets. In the 70s and 80s Hunters was a very deprived area and had a very bad reputation. It was rebuilt late 80s I think and renamed Fairfield, it's all very different now. Our old house at 33d Hunter Crescent is totally gone.

Are you thinking that photo is taken on the white bridge? It's a mistake I also had for years. It's actually taken on the steps of the Feus Hoose pub which is also long gone. That's my dad in the photo.

The Feus Hoose was where the block of flats is in the middle of this picture, my photo was taken facing the opposite direction towards Hunters:

Yes I did think that was the white bridge.  I now know where you mean, strange to think a pub was ever there.  I must get down to the Museum and see if they have any photos of "old" Hunters.

Hi All

I beg to differ from Joe  McDonald Court I think is what used to be Ruthven Place which was a culdesac off Ruthven Avenue. If you use the link to google maps that Joe provided turn through 180 degrees Ruthven avenue is the street that runs along in front of you. If you go to the right hand end this was all new housing when they built fairfield. The 2 storey tenement on the right hand side was the last building in Ruthven Avenue in 1979 there was one of these across the road which appears to have been demolished. at the end of this street where the trees are this is now a football pitch once the town dump. At the end of these 2 storey buildings were prefabs which in the sixties when they were emptied prior to demolishion were our playground. The stepps with Joes father on them was infact as stated the fues hoose pub these steps were our journey to school at Goodlyburn. the area over his shoulder was in fact Tulloch road. The waste area were you can see the remnants of trees and hedging was for a short time also used as a refuse tip. strange how the memories come back. I noticed that they have changed the numbering in what used to be Ruthven Place it used to be numbered from the right as you look into the entry No1 round to No5.

Yours Aye
BruceL

P.S. Fairfield avenue is now what I think was Ruthven Avenue

Hi All

I have had another look at google maps Fairfield Avenue was definitely Ruthven Avenue but has now been extended. Ruthven Avenue exited onto the Crieff road where the bus stop is shown at Toll house gardens. At this area was a paper shop, a Chip shop and a cafe where we spent our school diner money on chips and the pin ball machine and juke box.

Hunters crescent followed the line of Leslie Ct,McKenzie Ct etc and exited onto the Crieff road at where the roundabout at car radio services is. car radio services used to be the local post office operated by a gentleman by the name of Todd or at least it was known as Todd's this gentleman gave this up in the seventies I think and moved to a guest house at Gannochy.

At the junction of Crieff road and Tulloch road what is now Anchor house was the local policeman's house this guy knew everyone in the area by name and reputation. At the junction of Fairfield Avenue and Leslie Ct (Hunters Crescent) This used to be a big crossroads (Hunters crescent continued to Tulloch road) This was our local football pitch not as much traffic back then. The local bus service used to run from the junction of Huntrers crescent Tulloch road to Darnhall drive. The bus used to reverse into hunters crescent and turn left into Tulloch road.

I now go with what Bruce has said. My sister used to live in Ruthven Place then. Am I right in saying there was a Ruthven Terrace as well?

My granny lived in Hunter Terrace and there was a children's swing park behind her house. It was all concrete and broken glass IIRC. I used to get taken over to my gran's while my mum and dad worked then he would pick me up in his coal lorry at teatime.

I'm trying to find an old street plan with Hunters as it was or I'll try to sketch it.

Hi Joe

I don't think there was a Ruthven Terrace. Hunters Terrace linked Hunters Crescent and Ruthven Avenue. I don't remember a swing park in Hunters Terrace either I believe the swing park is where the swing park is now next to the railway.

Use the above link zoom in and you will find Hunters Crescent bounded by the Crieff road, the Railway and the town lade.

Hi,

Have been reading about "Hunters" & some good as well as bad memories.
I lived in that posh street Hunter Terrace  ;D so there's a good chance I may have known your granny if you can give me a surname please or house number with alphabet  :P

There sure was a playpark there as well as the one at the railway end.
In fact, the posh Hunter Terrace one had a Piler and did we all pile onto it  ;D

In summer we would venture to the railway one and pile the grass up for a soft landing for jumping off swings at height  :P
We would also lie on the floor !!! of the roundabout which was pushed at great speed & had to try & retrieve a strategically placed lollypop stick  ;D

Could you imagine kids of today having the same fun..................... ???

Oh, there was another park directly across the railway (over the bridge) which also had a piler.

Does anyone remember the Sweetie Factory (Rowentrees I think) next to the railway (off Fues Rd)? We used to clamber down the bridge to the railway line to get sweets which were thrown out.

Annie

My granny was Maria Duncan and she lived at 3b Hunter Terrace until she died in 1979 aged 78.

Hi Joe,

That name is unknown to me. I moved in 1974 having lived there since 1962.

The people I recall there (bottom left)? with kitchen facing playpark was Elliot but my memory is blurred as to whether they were there after I left or not?

Can you recall when your gran moved there?

I also think I remember the local coalman being called Cappy? & a really nice old man although he probably seemed older as we were just bairns  :)

Post by: JoeDuffy on Sunday 08 September 13 18:14 BST (UK)
Not sure when she moved to there. This is her in 1974, the only photo I think I have of her.
I remember that picture she had with the fisherman pointing out to sea.
The coalman was Cappy Oswald I think, my dad worked for the Co-op coal deliveries in those days.
We lived around the corner from my gran's. 33d Hunter Crescent we were. I was only about 4 or 5 when we left Hunters in 1973 or 1974 so don't have many memories of it.

Sorry, I don't recognise her at all.

I'm not sure exactly which end 33 was so can you give me a couple of names you remember please as we were not really supposed to venture into the crescent lol..................nothing to do with anything other than safety for keeping an eye on us.
We all just met up in the swing park  ;D

Just been speaking to my mum. She reckons they all moved to Hunters in the early 60s. My gran originally lived in Ruthven Avenue (number six maybe?) before moving round to Hunter Terrace.

My mum remembers the Elliotts, reckons they maybe had a disabled son who died? Possibly a family called Drummond also lived in my granny's block of four?

She reckons the sweetie place was called Campbells?

That's right, same name as film "Billy" - was sad really, a very nice family.
Not sure of the sweet factory name to be honest but lucky we weren't killed on the railway.
My mother died in Ruthven Ave 1984 aged only 43

She now remembers another family in Hunter Terrace which I'm guessing was almost certainly yours!  :)

There was the McGoldricks as well?

That family lived in the crescent on right hand side heading to dump. I recall the surname but that's all.

Hi Ann

Watson's also had a chippie on the Crieff road (same family) on the right hand side (next to the paper shop) as you approach the Dunkeld road We always used to visit on our way home after being at the swimming baths.

33 Hunters crescent was probably about mid way between hunters terrace and the cross roads at Ruthven Avenue.

Hi B,

I had mentioned the Crieff Rd chippie (as in over the bridge). I suppose anyone not knowing the area wouldn't be able to identify where "over the bridge" was which was the bridge over the railway on Crieff Rd.
Apologies,

A

Hi Joe,
This is my first posting so hope I get it right. I also lived in "Hunters" at 25f Hunters Crescent until we moved to what was a new scheme at that time about 68 or 69, Wallace Place on the Crieff Road. My Grannie and grandad's from both sides Flynn and Fletcher were all there, as were most of the aunties and uncles, as I recall. Your picture at the Feus Hoose brought back some memories as we used to nick down the steps to get home from Goodlyburn. Was there a cafe attached to the chip shop? and the name Cavellini is ringing bells for some reason, did they own it? I remember a few names that lived in "Hunters" but unsure if I can mention them, I remember a couple of the ones you mentioned, the Elliott's and the McGoldrick's.
There was certainly some lively characters.

I was born in 3c Ruthven Place in 1943.
At the back of our building was the town lade.
My big sister says that also in our close were the names Burnie and McLeod.
We moved in 1948 to the new housing scheme of High Craigie (Moncrieffe).

Hello
I lived in Hunters between 1955 and 1964,  and saw it for the last time in 1977.  My memories of the place are fairly vivid and I knew many families.
I don't know if the author is still interested in this, but if so I may be able to answer some of his questions.  I'll check back for a response.

Cheers

Bruce, I had Watson connections (origins in Methven) who ran chippy shops somewhere in the area, and in Dundee.  I wonder if they would be the ones you remember?  Do you happen to know the Watson names?

In case anyone hasn't heard, there is a book out about Hunters available from Amazon and other places. It's called "Hunters: Wee stories from The Crescent".

I've only read the first couple of chapters but it's a must for anyone with a connection to the crescent.

Such a sad & needless story available on FindMyPast.

For ref. for anyone researching that family, the victims were...

Mrs Elizabeth Ryan (41), previously MacNamara, nee Kelly, daughter Annie MacNamara aka Nancy Ryan (20) both from Ireland & the Gunman was Duncan Doig (40) a native of Crieff, Perthshire.

All info. available at scotlandspeople & there's a photo of the lovely daughter Annie/Nancy on FindMyPast.
