Title: Alexander Pentland, Spirit Merchant, Portadown
Post by: worldlywanderer on Wednesday 04 July 12 08:50 BST (UK)
Evelyne Pentland wife of the Portadown publican, Alexander died in 1940. Can anyone tell me his wife's surname and whether he was the son of Richard and Sarah Pentland? I have looked for a marriage but none found in a sensible period.  Alexander appears to have married in 1919 but there is no obvious matching entry for his bride.

The marriage certificate will list father's name and occupation for both bride and groom which should make it possible to find both family in census records.

There are several Ev* Malcolmsons in 1901/1911 census but this is only Alexander Pentland in Armagh in 1901-

In 1911 same family is now listed as Methodist rather than Church of Ireland-

PRONI Will Extracts (www.proni.gov.uk)- "Pentland Evelyne of 46 Bridge Street Portadown county Armagh died 6 July 1940 Administration Belfast 26 August to Alexander Pentland spirit merchant the husband. Effects £421 15s.

Hi,
Note the spelling of MALCOMSON and see http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Armagh/Portadown_Urban/Jervis_Street/300505/

Hello I am wondering why you are researching Alexander and Evelyn Pentland? Are you a relative or do you have any information on their siblings or parents.

I am Evelyn Pentland Acworth--the granddaughter.

Yes Harold's wife is still alive. I have 8 cousins on the Pentland side and am one of three.
Weird to see the grave details printed that I have red so often

This is a 2 part answer.  I  trace Pentlands because I have Jones and McDowells in my tree and I expect to link more closely to Pentlands someday.   One of these went to Amsterdam, NY and therefore became even more of interest.  Pentland and Pendleton are very old names in the area and I expect more ties than I have found so far.  I took the pictures and made the posting hoping to help others so the could later help me.

Secondly, this is an old post.  I hear that laws have changed in either Ireland or NI and postings of church inscriptions are now banned,  They are located on private property and therefore considered private information.  So many sites list grave inscriptions and they do not seem to have deleted them.  I don't know what is going on, but I suppose if the listing bothers you, you an apply to have it deleted.  This flies in the face of very old American gravestones which inform the viewer that they will soon be lying in the ground and therefore should not sin.  These appear to be public warnings to me and are part of my culture.  I feel strongly that gravestones are made as a remembrance and to remind all people of those who came before and that they  can be a powerful public statement.  They often speak of the love of those surviving or the pain of losing children.  The carving style reflects the cultural times and makes me more aware of changes.  I think it is important to all of us to better understand our ancestors and social history .    Apparently others disagree,   Have it deleted if you wish.

Thanks for information I just said it was weird to read something so personal on a forum I don't object so won't get it deleted I can see why the law has changed I thought that there might have been a closer connection to my family

I'm not sure that the law regarding posting such details has actually changed. If it has (unlikely) then SO many sites that have such details would have to make adjustments  ::)

Delighted to hear from a living family member Evelynne. It was my post which started this and yes I'm a Pentland descendant which probably means we are very, very distantly related. I have been researching this line of my family for some years now and one of my particular interests is the Irish/Scottish connection. I'd be delighted to share any information I have on your line so if you are interested send me a private message and we'll see what can be done.

Regarding the comments on postings, I understand the situation is not at all complicated. Firstly, deceased persons have no privacy rights. Secondly, information in documents in the public arena which includes anything outside the usual closure periods, may be published but copies of original documents are subject to the usual copyright laws. Lastly, gravestones remain the property of the descendants of the person who owned the plot so only they could conceivably have any rights over them, a blanket ban would be unenforceable. Since the information is on display, regardless of where, it is public information which is why there has been no wholesale removal of posts. I hope that puts minds at rest.

Richard Pentland m. Sarah Hamilton seems to be the parents of Alexander if he married Eva Malcomson in 1919 in Portadown.  Richard is in the 1901 census on line and born a few years before 1860.  He says he is of full age in 1887 in Portadown when he married and says his father is named Richard.  Richard should be in Griffiths, probably in Portadown, but I haven't looked  Father Richard must be born before 1835.  There is a Thomas Honneyford marriage of  Mary jane, a siblingto Alexander, I don't seem to have Portadown records, but I hope the other person can link easily to you.

I'm not sure that the information posted in reply #11 does pertain to Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland.

There was a case in N.I. a few years ago- https://www.lurganmail.co.uk/news/ban-on-photographs-of-headstones-plan-1-7062995
However the issue was about a company wanting to survey the graveyard-
"Councillor McKenna was told by a council official that people could request to have a photo removed; it had been highlighted that is was a public cemetery and anyone could come in and take pictures. But Councillor McKenna reiterated that the issue was with the council granting permission for the pictures to be taken and published worldwide."

From looking at other articles from various countries it would seem that sites like Find A Grave, etc. are here to stay  ;D
