Moved around County Londonderry-
Martha Jane born 6 June 1864 Newtownlimavady district (page 923 in civil register)
Rebecca born 8 Apr.1867 Glendermot district
Robert born 13 Aug.1868 Kilderry
Anna born 7 JUly 1870 Kilderry
Hessy born 11 Apr.18671874 Coleraine district (page 596 in civil register).

That family unlikely to be the correct one. Son John Elder was born 1879 in Belfast not 1887 in Scotland.

Thanks JDC, this isn't my John Elder.
However I did find on familysearch a tree of Martha Jane Elder, that gave details of a Samuel Elder who died in Vancouver 1946 and a John Henry Elder who died in 1968 in Vancouver.
They must be some connection to my John and Annie Elder, who both died in Northern Ireland.
Martha Jane Elder was widowed before the 1901 census and on the 1911 census her sister Rebecca was living with her and 3 of her 4 children.
Her son John Campbell b 1887 wasn't on it and I'm wondering had he emigrated to Canada.
Thank you for your help, Betty

Having another go at finding members of the Elder family who moved to Canada from Limavady in Ireland.

Rebecca Elder born 20.8.1883 in Limavady married John Morrow from Limavady in Victoria 3.10.1907

Who did Rebecca travel with etc.

Any info would be much appreciated, Betty

Here's the link to view 1901 and 1911 Canadian census- www.automatedgenealogy.com

In Northern Ireland Ruby is often used as another form of Rebecca.

There is a death for Rebecca Morrow, widow of John Morrow whose parents were Thomas Elder and Hannah Hunter in Richmond, BC on 9 Mar 1972.

I'm a little confused by where this Rebecca fits. You said you found a death for the Rebecca who was the daughter of John and Annie and she was 10 years older than the Rebecca who married John Morrow.

Forgot to mention that I think last night I came across that Rebecca Elder going to Canada but she was born c1886.

Parents of this Rebecca Elder were likely Thomas Elder & Hannah Hunter.

However I did find on familysearch a tree of Martha Jane Elder, that gave details of a Samuel Elder who died in Vancouver 1946 and a John Henry Elder who died in 1968 in Vancouver.

According to the death registation for Samuel Elder who died 7 Aug 1946, his parents were Thomas Elder and Sarah Perry.

The John Henry Elder who died in Vancouver on  16 Oct 1968 was the son of Thomas Elder and Hannah Hunter.

How are these people connected to the family you are looking for? Are you looking for the children of John Elder and Anna Rodden or any Elder who may be connected to them? Do you think all of John and Anna's children emigrated or just some?

By the way, when you refer to the 1901 and 1911 census it is helpful if you also say what country's census. If you don't many will assume you are referring to the Canada census since this is the Canada forum.

Many thanks Valeriec and Jacquie, thank you for your information.

I've looked up the family on Familysearch and my John Elder and Anna Rodden are on it! So there has to be a connection somewhere....
John and Anna's daughter Martha Jane was widowed quite young and she brought up their 4 children on her own..
John Campbell born 19.7.1887 Ireland and died 18.6.1965 in Vancouver
I'm assuming her other 3 children left for Canada as well as Martha died in Toronto in 1921 and her sister Rebecca Elder died in 1937 in Toronto. The family were on the Ireland Census in 1911 Belfast, so they must have left after that.....
Again, because of the same names running through these families, I definately think there is a connection..

Once again I appreciate all your help,
Betty

A couple of notes and observations

I stressed that Ruby not Rebecca was used on the marriage registration to make it easier to search for the information as the original registrations can be viewed as well as transcriptions. Soemtimes, we gain more information that way.

I think you may be dealing with two siblings, John b. about 1841 and Thomas born about 1849. They seem to both originate in the Limavaddy area and have reused the same forenames over and over again. That is a common naming practice in both Ireland and Scotland.

If you look at deaths at Family Search, you will note that the name Thomas Elder is prevalent in the early 1800's so that could also be the name of the father of John and Thomas. Totally speculation but something to keep in mind when looking for information.

Looking at the family of Thomas Elder and Hannah Hunter/Sarah Perry

1901 Census of Ireland
Londonderry
Limavaddy
61 Main St.
Thomas Elder age 52, widower
sons William age 28, Joseph age 24, Thomas P age 24, Fredrick G P age 12, Samuel age 11.
Would appear to have large gap between Thomas and Fredrick so could be children from different mothers.
70 Irish Green St.
John H. Elder, age 13, brother in law, in the household of Robert Kerr
6 Kennaught
Rebecca Elder, age 16, sister in law, in the household of Samuel Wark.
I think this is the Rebecca/Ruby who married John Morrow
Irish Green St.
John Morrow, age 21

1901 Census of Ireland
Antrim
St. Georges Ward, Belfast
161 Donegall Road
John Elder, head of family, age 60, widower
Lizzie Elder, daughter, age 26
Rebecca Elder, daughter, age 33
Matha Campbell, daughter, age 36, widow
John Campbell, grandson, age 13
George Campbell, grandson, age 11
Robert Campbell, grandson, age 8
Wilhelmina, granddaughter, age 5
1911 census, same address has Martha, George, Robert, Wilhelmina, Rebecca Elder. I wasn't able to find John in the census so it doeslook like he moved on between 1901 and 1911. He would be born roughly 1888/89 so may have enlisted in the First World War. You can check for Attestation Papers for Canadian soldiers at

Census of Canada
British Columbia/Vancouver
Morrow, John, b. Oct 1879, imm 1906, carpenter
Rubbia, b. Jul 1876, imm. 1907
The original looks like born in 1886 which would make her 25 which is in line with her marriage registration.
Margret, daughter, b. Aug 1908
Johns, son, b. Feb 1910
both were born in BC, Johns on the original looks like John S.
Elder, John, brother, b. Mar 1889, imm 1907, machinist
Elder, Fladrean ?, brother, b. Jul 1890, imm 1907
Elder, Samuel, brother, b. Aug 1893, imm 1907
Fladrean on the original could be a version of Fredrick or Robert but Rebecca appears to have a brother Fredrick that would have been born around 1890

marriage
Samuel Elder, June 1926, Vancouver
Mabel Wesley
Samuel lists his parents as Thomas Elder and Hannah Hunter

On his death registration, his wife Mabel is the informant and lists his parents as Thomas Elder and Sarah Perry.

Once again many thanks!
I think you're right about John and Thomas being brothers.....John is my husbands Great grandfather and I've been stuck on it for a bit, so it's great to get moving again.
The information you put up about the census in Ireland....my Anna Roddens father was a blacksmith in Irish Green Street, so I definately think they are all connected and living in and around that area.
How exciting, this is what is so great about Rootschat, people are very generous with their time and expertise!

If you are referring to family trees posted at Family Search that isn't necessarily true. There are a lot of trees on the web that have mistakes or are flat out wrong. There are too many unsourced trees being used as source information by others as well. Biggest mistake I ever made was accepting information from a tree without verifying it. I also have sent out countless messages and emails to others politely asking them to correct their trees (I always provide proof when I do that) when I see mistakes.

Death of Martha Campbell d/o John Elder and Annie Rodden, born Derry, d. March 5, 1921 at Toronto, Ontario age 52.  Son Robert Campbell was informant

Elizabeth Elder, 32, presbyterian of 385 Dupont St. Toronto, d/o John Elder and Annie Rodden married 05 July 1910 at Toronto, Ontario to John Hutchinson, 30, carpenter s/o James Hutchinson and Jemima Rennie.  This couple is on the 1911 Canadian census in Toronto and Elizabeth shows a birth of Mar 1879 and an immigration year of 1910.

Death of Rebecca Elder of 1155 King St. W. Toronto, Ontario.  She was single, b. April 8, 1872 Ireland and death at age 65.  D. July 31, 1937 at Toronto.  She had been employed as a matron at the Mercer Reformatory.  d/o of John Elder and Annie Rodden.  Informant was Mr. J. Hutchinson, brother-in-law of 652 Ossington Ave., Toronto.  Burial at Prospect Cemetery (Toronto).

It seems that your Elders had a strong tie to Toronto.  The pay site (modestly priced) of the archived Toronto Star newspaper - Pages of the Past - might be of value to you.

The children of John Elder & Annie Rodden seem to all be accounted for now- except for John- although they seem to have a nasty habit of being terribly inconsitent with their ages  :-\

Martha Jane married Campbell & died in Toronto
Rebecca died in Toronto
Anna who married Thomas Rodgers, my husbands grandfather in 1893
Lizzie/Elizabeth went to Canada & married Hutchinson
John
Mary died Belfast
Robert died Belfast
Hessy died Belfast

Hi Betty
My Elder family is from Northern Ireland as well. The names of John, Thomas, Annie, Martha, and Robert, come up on a regular basis.
My great-great grandparents were John Elder and Margaret Stewart. They were married in 1842 in Ballymena, Antrim. The children I have found so far are John, Robert, Joseph, Isaac ,Thomas and Annie. (Thomas was my great-grandfather).
Annie married Henry Smyth, in 1882, and one of the witnesses was a "Martha Elder". I believe Martha to be Annie's sister, but have never found any proof of this so far. (Therefore, I don't list her as one of John and Margaret's children).

Wheww - now to get to my point...
I know they travelled to Scotland, where some of my family settled, as well as the U.S., Canada, and Australia. I also believe that they travelled within Northern Ireland. I have long had the belief, that quite a few of the Elder's in Northern Ireland are related, as they seem to use the same names over and over. Also, the farm where my family lived in the Ballymena area, was given the name of Burnfoot. I have come across other Elder's, whose family came from "Burnfoot, Donegal". I keep in touch with them, just in case we can make a connection.

I am going through information that I have gathered over the years, to see if I can find anything that might connect to you. I know that I have seen the names of John Elder and Annie Rodden on many of my searches. I will check to see if I have anything that may help you.

I do know that I have a spare certificate from Milton, Glasgow, that shows a 1902 birth of a Thomas Elder whose parents were William White Roden Elder, and Margaret Beveridge McTaggart. (I have no idea if they could be related to you, but wanted to let you know that if you want a copy, just send me a "personal message", with your email and I will forward that on to you.

Janice

I forgot to mention this,
If you are related to the above William Roden Elder and Margaret McTaggart, I know they were married in Anderston, Glasgow, on July 14th, 1899. Unfortunately, I do not have that certificate. (Their marriage is stated on the birth of their son).
I also know that Margaret died in Milton, Glasgow, in 1963 at the age of 82.
William White Roden Elder died in Milton, Glasgow, in 1957 at the age of 78.
(Again, I don't have these certificates, but did a quick search of ScotlandsPeople)

It is true about not trusting everything on Ancestry, as someone used a photograph of my great grandmother, and said it was my great great grandmother. I know differently, as I have the original photo with my uncle standing beside her. (lol) With that being said, you can still find quite a bit of information that will be useful, even if someone else got it wrong. One person had my grandfather's aunt and uncle as being married in Ireland, when they were actually married in Glasgow, (again I have the certificate). They also had the parents of the wife (my grandfather's aunt) completely wrong. It took showing them the marriage certificate, and their passenger list, along with her brother's passenger list before they realized that they were wrong.

Hi Janice
Thank you so much for contacting me! I was at the Generals Record Office in Belfast on Monday, if only I had heard from you before then I could have done some research for you!
Part of the problem is that there are so many Johns, Annie's etc and so many Elders!
I know that the father of my John Elder is also John and according to the marriage cert, John is a servant and on 1901 census he was a coachman, his father was a labourer.
So far I haven't been able to find my Johns birth etc.,
If I can look up any information for you, please let me know.

I was her first grandchild. She continues to be the biggest influence in my life. She was a remarkable woman. She had eight grandchildren.

I knew both my great uncles Johnny and Freddy who lived in Richmond BC where I grew up. My great uncle Sammy died before I was old enough to know him, but I knew his wife Mable and their three children very well. The youngest I knew as cousin Marie who was actually my dads cousin. Marie was just a bit older than me and I always had a crush on her while growing up. Mable was from around Prince Rupert BC. She raised her three children in New Westminster, BC where she was a furrier.

I just found more (I really have to get all these notes together).

My great-great grandparents.
Thomas Elder - 1800-1883
Rebecca Perry - 1809-1882

My great grandparents. Married 1871 maybe ?
Thomas Perry Elder - 1847-1929 (boot maker) Limivady
Hannah Robinson? d.1870 Maybe first wife?
Hannah Hunter - d.1898? born in Scotland
Apparently there were eleven children. Sammy, Johnny, Freddy, Rebecca, Joseph, Maggie(Margaret), Sarah Warke and Thomas are the only ones I can identify.

My grand parents.
John Morrow - 1879-1947 ( carpenter-cabinet maker-farmer)
Rebecca Morrow (nee Elder aka Ruby) -1883-1972 Apparently Hannah Elder(nee)Hunter was her stepmother maybe?

My parents.
John (Jack) Elder Morrow - 1910-1997
Ida Lorena Morrow (nee Varty) - 1914-1989

This is mostly word of mouth I have made notes on at family gatherings over the years. Too bad I wasn't interested in this stuff back when they were all still alive!

We aren't allowed to post details of living people so you'll need to go back and delete some of the details on your post- it's explained under Posting Guidelines in Help pages (link at top of page).

Rebecca's mother was Hannah Hunter as is written on her birth records (link I posted earlier)

"Warke household in 1901 with Sarah's sister Rebecca Elder"

This is getting interesting! I remember, back when I was 14 or 15, relatives visiting the Morrows in Richmond BC.  They were the Louis Warke family with a son close to my age. I believe they were from somewhere in the USA and belonged to the same religious affiliation (Brethren) as my parents and grandparents. The services were always held in "Gospel Halls". I had never realized they were from the Elder side.

"Louis Warke"
This may be your "Louis Warke"
Joseph Lewis Warke (wife Greta)
"The Warke family immigrated to Canada in 1948 landing on Pier 21 in Halifax. They then went to Inverness Quebec, then to Manitoba ,then to Alberta. They actually had 6 children. 4 came over from Ireland with them (Gibson, Lewis, Alberta, Brenda) and 2 were born in Canada Ronald and Trevor. Joseph Lewis Warke and Greta (Mayretta was her full name) were in the ministry. He came as a Presbyterian missionary and then became a Baptist minister."
I found this here.  http://elder-mcgilligan.com/elder/thomas-elder-1896/
Lewis Warke would have been my dads cousin and my second cousin.

I was called Eliza McLaren Elder after my Aunt Eliza McLaren and one of my sisters is called Margaret Beveridge Elder after my grandmother. My brother is called David McTaggart Elder. I also know that there was Aunt May and Martha, Uncle Robert, I remember John McLaren too. I had a cousin Rebecca probably a few names that I could also mention. So nice to read this post. I was looking into our family tree quite a few years ago and never followed it very far must take it up again. Thanks

Hopefully a helpful update. My father Robert Kerr Warke born 21/10/1922 was the last child born to Samuel Wark e and Sarah Elder. They left Limavady to Live in Belfast where dad was born. He died in Bournemouth Jan 2012. Lewis Wark e emigrated to Canada where he was a minister. Edmonton I believe. His surviving children still live in Canada. Don't know a lot about the Elders however do have a photo of Sarah (Eld er) Wark e my grandmothe r.

Thank you so much for this information, I will definitely look into this and get back to you.
The Elders are my husbands family, funnily enough, my maiden name is Kerr!

Hi

My grandad was also called William White Roden Elder, but he was born in 1914 and his father was Robert Elder. On is birth certificate is shows his mother as a Elizabeth Hawley and that she was married to a Robert Rogan(Regan) but had not lived with him for 13 years and he was not the father. There are only 2 other pieces of information that I have found a census from 1911 of Robert and Elizabeth together and sadly the death of Elizabeth's daughter in 1903 at age 2 months.

Hoping someone could help, I wonder if there is a link as the name isn't a common one.

Thanks
Peter

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

Not sure where your Robert Elder would fit in  :-\

John Elder married (1863) Ann Rodden- originally from Co. Londonderry but moved to Glasgow and eventually many of the family went to Canada,
Their son Robert born 1868 but died 1896 in Belfast so he can't be your grandfather's father.

You've probably read through this entire thread before posting but take special note of replies #24, #25, #38.
It's possible that others who have posted here previously will respond and may by now have more family details.
