Hello Cupcake

Hope your offer still stands for penninghame, can't believe no one has responded.   I have to be a bit vague since don't have access to my tree at this time, however if it's not too much trouble my Family of McCullochs, McNairn & Mckie are from this area, in particular the McCullochs who lived at Glasserton for many, many years.

Many thanks
Alison

Hello Cupcake

Thank you very much for the time you spent looking for my McCulloch's, McNairns & McKie's, unfortunately none of the above appear to be mine, sad, I was so looking forward to adding some more leaves to my tree.   My lot just seem to disappear without a trace.

Thanks again

Hello Scott

My McCullochs all hail from Glasserton I'm afraid, You would think I'd be able to find out more about them just because they did stay still!

Hi Alison,

From the Glasserton MI's the following on the McCulloch's / McNairn's.

#142   Erected by John McCulloch, farmer in West Rouchan in memory of his wife Isabella Wallace, who died 5th August 1887 aged 59 years. Also of his wives Mary McNairn, who died 11th April 1894 aged 33 years and Jean McNairn, who died 16th November 1902 aged 32 years. The said John McCulloch, who died at West Rouchan 27th April 1904 aged 67 years.

There are 7 other headstones for McCulloch's so if you give me McCulloch first names I will look them up.

ooh Charlotte21, this IS MY lot, John McCulloch married three times, 1st Wife Isabella died he then married for the 2nd time, she died, he then married her sister, so the marriage was not legal (until 1907) when you could marry your dead wife's sister.

This is all from memory so I shall access my tree & be back,  sooooo excited.

Thank you
Alison

Thank you cupcake for your interesting headstones.

Sadly none of the people mentioned are my Marshalls or Williamsons though I am searching for a David Williamson but of a slightly different date. He was born in Penpont though which is a coincidence.

I should love to know how those two elderly ladies happened to die on the same day both aged 90. They must have been twins I suppose.

Thanks again.

 Kirsty,

Not sure whether you know the other Graveyards in the area:

There is the Penninghame New Cemetery - situated at the western side of Newton Stewart and clearly visible from the A75  Stranraer road. The new cemetery was opened in 1895. The lair books are kept at Stranraer.

Challoch
All Saints Scottish Esiscopal Church to be foundat Challoch, 3 miles northwest of Newton Stewart on the A714 Girvan road. Consecrated in 1872, it is considered to be the finest example of a smallVictorian church in Scotland. The surrounding graveyard contains members of the families and households of theStopford-Blairs and Earls of Galloway.

BARGRENNAN
This church is hidden in the trees at the hamlet of Bargrennan 9 miles north west of Newton Stewart on the A714 Girvan road. Today, however, it is linked to Penninghame St John. The graves date from the late 1870's

The next time I am at the library, I'll see if they have the MI's for "Penninghame New Cemetery"

Wow, thank you so much. I did have a wander round a couple of churchyards when I was in the area a few years back but without much success. That is my family on the MI. I wonder if there was a mistake though as I know of a son who died in 1874 aged 2, but none of John's children that I know of were old enough to be 22 in 1874. More research required I think!

Thanks again.

Kirsty,

Pleased I was able to give you a little information.

I did wonder about the age of the son. Looks like an error on the MI's or, I have made the mistake when writing it down. Will check the next time I am at the library and, let you know. Should I come across any other information, I'll  post it here.

Just looked on Scotland's People and, there is a death entry for a son aged 2 1874.  Do you have this entry?

Kirsty,

Found this information on Family Search which you may already know:

John Landers & Margaret McAdam had a daughter Mary Anne b. 9 October 1871 ( I assume she died July 6th 1872 aged 9 months)

They had another daughter Mary Anne  b. 29 September 1874

Thanks for looking,  had seen that birth record. I do have a lot of info on this family though mostly births hence why I was looking for death info. Both Mary Ann and the son John who died had siblings named the same when the couple had more children.

What have you for Gordons? They were cousins, and succeeded to the Viscountcy of Kenmure & Lochinvar. I am a descendant of the Gordons of Penninghame and Kenmure and am currently trying to straighten out that line.

I only have the Penninghame MI's.

Have been through the Gordon's buried there .

This one gives James GORDON and wife Mary COULTER:

287
James GORDON who died at Black Bull Hotel 17 August 1886 aged 54 yrs. and his wife Mary COULTER who died 28 October 1902 aged 70 yrs.
There are others named on the haedstone, but not sure whether the above is any connection. If they are, I can give you the information.

Tx for the info. I was hoping for something older than that.
 Anyway, two questions:
1) You said you've "been through the Gordons buried there." Does that mean there are other Gordons other than James & Mary?
2) What is the significance of the MI after Pennygame?
3) If there are no other Gordons buried there, where might the Gordons of Penninghame (1630s - 1715) be buried?
Cheers, Jim
Title: Re: Penninghame MI's
Post by: cupcake on Thursday 17 April 14 19:08 BST (UK)
jimgordo1,

The Gordon burials are much later than 1630s - 1715. I only have the Penninghame Old Kirkyard MI's. The MI stands for Monumental Inscriptions - lists all the burials that have headstones, in that cemetery.

As I am not from this area, I do not know of other cemeteries . You mention Kemmure in your first post, there maybe a cemetery there.

Just a thought, there is a possibility your ancestors were buried without a headstone, and may never find their burial place, as with my GGG Grandparents.

Sorry I wasn't able to help. Good luck with your search.
