Title: Thomas Trollip - Horningsham, Wiltshire
Post by: GTrollope on Tuesday 17 July 12 21:16 BST (UK)
Hi, we have traced our family line back to Thomas Trollip (Trollop), my GGGGGG Father, who married Honor Carpenter on 25 June 1759 at St John the Baptist Church in Horningsham.  However, we haven't been able to go any further back. We would love to know who Thomas Trollip's parents were. All we know is that Thomas was born before 1740.  Can anyone help with this enquiry?
Any info gratefully received!
Many thanks
G

I have not been able to find anything further for Thomas, but I have found the burial for Honor (if you don't already have it)
From the Registers at the Independant Chapel in Horningsham, Wiltshire
Honor Trolip  [sic]
Date of burial - 10 May 1810
Aged 77 years
Parish of Abode - Horningsham, Wiltshire

Thank you so much for looking, it is much appreciated.

I have contacted Wiltshire and Swindon Archives and found that they hold the marriage record.  Unfortunately the witnesses to the marriage were not family, which makes me think that Thomas' parents may not even have lived in Horningsham and that Thomas settled there looking for work. I am only guessing.  My next step is to visit the archives and try and find Thomas' baptism record - although this is really a shot in the dark as I suspect he may not have been born in the area.

It is interesting to note that you have found Honor with the spelling of Trolip, as this is what was on the marriage records too. Not sure how it changed in only one generation to Trollop. Another mystery!

Many thanks again.

I can find a lot of 'Trollip' and 'Trollop' going forward from Honor and Thomas but nothing going back.  The records that I have access to start in 1787 so a little late for any children to Thomas & Honor if they married in 1759, but you may already have the details of their children etc.,  I was just going to have a search again using 'Trolip' and see what I can come up with  ;)  I notice that there a number of later Honor Trollop's and Trollips.. so obviously the family settled in Horningsham.

Hi, yes I have quite a substantial family tree stemming from Thomas and Honor.  The family, which was quite prolific,  stayed in the area for over a century until my Great Grandfather married a welsh lass called Sarah Harris and they settled in south Wales.  My Grandfather then moved to London as a young man and that is where my father was born.

Thank you so much again for your help.

Ahh.. this is interesting...  the Trolip family may have been in the locality for a time before that too... the burial of 89 year old William Trolip on 14 September 1810 again from the Registers of the Independant Chapel in Horningsham.   This gives William a birth date of 1721. An elder brother for Thomas maybe?

Oooh, that gives me something to go on now - fingers crossed it leads to the parents. If I can find the baptism records for William Trolip in the Archives that would be great.

Thinking about it some more, it is not inconceivable that William could be Thomas' father as he would have been 38 at the time of Thomas' marriage and Thomas could have married at 18/19? A possibility?

Fab!

Great I hope it helps... Of course you should also look at the villages/towns near to Horningsham.. Corsley, Chapmanslade, Warminster which are in Wiltshire and then Frome which is Somerset, it is just on the boarder.  Try googling Longleat Estate and Trollope or Trolip  (and variations) ... etc., and you may comeup with something there as well.  Trollope is a well known local name throughout the villages here.

Good luck with your research ..

Ps.. there are a number of burials 1809-1810 and written against one of the Trollip entries is "died of typhed fever"

Hi
I have Trollopes in my family too, who lived in Longbridge Deverill.

It is believed that all the Trollopes in the area around Horningsham originated from William Trollop who was a stonemason, part of the team of workers who moved from the north of England to build Longleat House in 1560.  The house took 12 years to complete and the workers all settled in Horningsham and many married local girls.

William Trollop married Avis Trapp.

“In 1569 John Trapp settled a tenement called Trapp’s Place, in Wells Street (this was in Corsley)  on his daughter Avice when she married William Trolloppe of Horningsham.  Trapp’s son and heir released his right in 1582, and Trolloppe’s son Allen sold the tenement to Sir Thomas Thynne in 1635.  It consisted of a house, three closes adjoining and three acres of field land, and was held of the Manor of Little Corsley”  (Source: Elizabeth Crittall’s History of Wiltshire, Vol 8) from an essay by William Trollop)

Avis Trollop left a Will.
Transcription of her will:
Will of Avis Trollope, widow, written 1617, proved 1624

“ Avis Trollop de Horningsham   In the name of God Amen
I,  Avis Trollope of Horningsham in the County of Wilts widow do make my last will and     in mind an d          I bequeath my soule to the       and my body to be buried as it so please Almighty god  as for my temporal goodes I dispose following    I give and bequeath to my sonne Allon Trolloppe     I give to my soone John Trolloppe   I give to my sonne Roger Trolloppe    my sonne Morris Trolloppe  my goods movable and    moviable   I give and bequest to my daughter Agnes Smyth widow

28th Day of January in the year  of the reign of  Soveraign Lord James by the grace of god of England France and Ireland   …Scotland    Defender of the Faith   Anno Dom 1617
Witnesses to the will Robert Dobson,   Avis Trollop, her mark
Proved May 1624

Wiltshire Record Office have her will on-line.

I am unable to trace my line as far back as William, as the earliest Trollopes I can trace are John Trollop and his wife Esther/Hester who lived in Longbridge Deverill, and was buried there aged 46 in 1808, his wife  died inOctober 1841 and was buried there.   I am still trying to find a marriage between JohnTrollope and Esther, probably at Longbridge Deverill around 1789.

Just resurrecting this old thread as I have just found a Horningsham Trollip/Trollope in my family.  I have a Hester (or possibly Esther) Trollip/Trollope marrying William Miller (who was a carpenter) in Horningsham in c.1816 and having a son, Henry, c.1816.  There seem to be several possible Hester/Esther Trollip/Trollope baptisms around that time so I am unsure who her parents were.  Can anyone with more knowledge of the family help please?

Lebuce Trollop was also known as Libbeus (1747-1836). I have not found his baptism. His date of birth estimated from age given at death. He and Ann Mines had at least 10 children. In one of the Horningsham censuses taken between 1797 and 1801 he was described as having one of the largest families in the village. He is my 4x gr grandfather. I am descended from his daughter Sarah 1793-1869. She married William MARSH 1790-1856. I would be interested to find out how you know his father was William. The Mines family were from Corsley.

Thomas trollips father was libbeus or lebuce trollip 1747 -1836 and the mother was Anne mines. I think William trollip 1721-1810  is Lebuces father.

Esther Trollip christened 25 Jan 1796,   Horningsham, Wiltshire

Father's Name   JOSEPH Trollip
Mother's Name   MARY

There is also one 14 May 1799 to Elizabeth HILL and they are still alive 1841 Census

It is unlikely she is the Daug of Joseph 1775-1862 (died US from Trees?)

HI I have been researching the Trollops Trolip/Trollip/Tollope/Trollopes  for quite a while, I am directly descended. Libbeus is 4x gt grandfather. HIs son Thomas my 3 x gt grandfather
Libbeus    1836 Burials in the Parish of Horningsham in the County of Wilts.
Libbeus Trollope Abode: Horningsham When buried 26th May. Age 89. by Rev F Skurry.
I also have a copy of the Longleat archive "rolls" of Horningsham. which pre-date the 1841 census.
Problem is we moved and I haven't a clue where I put them!
I have visited Horningsham several times as well as the archives at Trowbridge.
I actually saw my ancestors cottages.... and several graves and visited the Independent Chapel.
We met 1 person who asked what we were looking for and when I explained he said he was also a Trollope !! how amazing.
I also used the LDS microfiches  to obtain Baptisms Deaths, Marriages etc. all probably available on line now.
You may know that there are 2 Thomas Trollopes that appear in Horningsham at this  time, mine Married Mary Edwards, 8 children that I am aware of.
The Trollopes also seemed to marry often into other known Horningsham families, the Carpenter's, Garretts, Marsh, White, and other Trollope families,
e.g. Hannah Trollope  dau of Thomas married Emmanuel Trollope son of Lambert.

Newbie.
