Title: Great Grandfather+Mother
Post by: brohenwr14 on Friday 20 July 12 10:19 BST (UK)
Back again, with another problem, I ordered my grandmother's birth certificate hoping her parents age would be on it so I could work out roughly their birth year.. but no age!! Stuck. Looked at the census, but as yet I'm stuck. Can't seem to find Ferryside on the census!!

I'm looking for John Evans Davies which was a farmer and Mary Davies (formerly Thomas). They lived at Roberts Rest Farm or Farmhouse Ferryside.

Any help again would be great!
Thanks very very much in advance.

I see on an address search that Roberts Rest Ferryside is in St Ishmael so I think I might have found their marriage -

St Ishmael
11 May 1920
John Evans Davies (aged 33)  and Mary Thomas (aged 34)

John was down as a widower and farmer on the entry.

I'll leave you to work out their approx years of birth  ;)

PS - what census are you looking for as they are unlikely to be there on the latest one in 1911  :-\

If you think that that is the correct marriage, the GRO ref is:

Jun q, 1920, Carmarthen, vol 11a p 3161

Names indexed as  John E Davies and Mary Thomas

Mary's father is recorded as David Thomas, so it looks a strong possibility. Maybe Mary was away, either working or visiting in 1901.

I have later found out that John was a widower when he married Mary, as I discovered, as I found out where he's been buried. Thanks very much!!

In 1901 census all the children are living at home, but in 1911 census all the children have moved out.. is there a way I can find out where??

It's very tricky after 1911 but you could start with that census and do searches for each of them - with females they might have married so you'll have to check for this.

I've found that obituaries in local newspapers are a good source for locating the wider kin group. Do you know when the parents died?

In the 1911 census their parents are still alive but I see they have employed a servant. But John Thomas, Henry Thomas, William Thomas, and Mary (my great grandmother) have moved out. In the 1901 census, John Thomas (born in 1879) was a railway laborer in 1901. But when Mary married her husband they had moved back to Roberts Rest Farmhouse around 1920. Regretting starting my family tree now.. it's addictive a and a lot of I wonder...!!!!

Thanks to everyone on this site, I have found Mary's brother's and sister, found out she also had a older sister. The only problem I have is I can't find John Thomas.. he was a railway labourer in 1901 but cannot find any trace of him in 1911 census. Anyone have any idea where I'm going wrong? Could he have died?
Another quick question.. where would I find obituaries?
Thanks to everyone that's helped me on my quest so far.

I can't think why he wouldn't be around in 1911 except for death, emigration or being missed off the census. Have you checked further afield because he might have moved with the railway co.

Obituaries would be in local papers and I'm not sure what they would be for that area - or the area where he might have died.  :-\

Thanks.. I asked my dad if he remembered him.. he remembers William and his grandmother (Mary) and Maria but not Henry and he's never heard of John! Will have to have a search around. Thanks very much for your help.

Is there a website i can search for obituaries. I found one for my grandmother on google but typing other family members is just confusing and ancestry is even more confusing or do I need to visit my local library?

Hi

I don't know of any free online sources for newspaper obituaries for Carmarthenshire in the 20th century. The problem is that you don't know if he died in the area or not - or even when/if he died in that time period.

You could try http://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/  It's a pay site and I think it would be very much needles and haystacks because of the limited information that you have on him.

As I said earlier, the reason that her might not be on the 1911 could be
Quote
death, emigration or being missed off the census
or, indeed, poor indexing.  I've still not found my great uncle in the 1911, although I know where he should be and have been through the census of the village household by household and searched generally  :-\

thanks brevitas, you have been a great help in my quest.
That's my problem, as my dad has no interest in his family tree.
