Hi
I'm researching my husband's family - one branch descends from two families who lived in Chesterfield, Derbyshire in the 19th century:
My husband's great great grandparents were Lucy Shipton and William Calder who married in New Zealand in 1876 - both came from Chesterfield.
William was the son of Rev Frederick Calder, Headmaster of the Grammar School in Chesterfield and Jane Appleyard. I'm interested in Frederick and Jane's families and also in William's siblings and their families - Frederick, who was a solicitor and Janet as well as at least two other siblings. One brother, Charles Montague Calder, I am already aware of - he also emigrated to New Zealand and worked as a solicitor in Auckland, NZ.
William Calder was also a Minister, as was his son and grandson - apparently there were eight generations of clergymen, so there would have been several prior to Rev Frederick Calder.
Can anyone assist at all with information on the Calder family in Chesterfield? Also, if anyone is interested in the New Zealand branch of the family - I am more than happy to share what happened to them here.
Thanks in advance.

Wow, just going through everything you've looked up for me (I can't thank you enough) and am just blown away. Along with the longstanding family history about there being about eight generations of clergymen in the family, the story was always given about there being one clergyman who was pulled from his coach and murdered. A family historian recently speculated that this was Rev James Sharp - Archbishop of St Andrews - and so finding the possible baptism of Frederick Calder, with his mother's maiden name being "Sharp" is certainly intriguing!! :)
-
Oh, and yes, you are definitely right - Frederick did remarry after Jane's death - to Selina England.

I did a bit of Googling about James SHARP and he died 1679 in Scotland so might be drawing a bit of a long bow with that one... ;D ;D
Maria appears to have been from Bedfordshire.
-
Yeah, James Sharp was a long way back, but my husband's grandfather (the last in the line of clergyman) apparently passed on the story of this particular clergyman being a direct ancestor and got it from his father who got it from his father... blah blah... might take some work to ever prove or disprove!!! Nevertheless, this side is pretty interesting - you've really given me some great information, and I really appreciate it! :D

I wonder who William Calder in the workhouse is? He's definitely not my William Calder, as he and his soon to be wife Lucy Shipton came to New Zealand prior to 1876, after William had spent some a couple of years as a warden at a college in Honolulu. My William Calder died on 10 August 1923 and is buried in Purewa Cemetery, in Auckland, New Zealand.
The names you've given for his father Frederick's siblings ring true, and have solved the mystery for me of why one of William and Lucy's children had the name Gillies as a middle name - Gillies obviously being the name of one of William's uncles! Many thanks, once again!! :)

Hi,
I have information about Frederick William Calder, born abt 1844 son of Frederick Calder & Jane Appleyard. Various
census state he was born Birmingham, he married Sarah Walker 23rd November 1870 Staveley Derbyshire she was the daughter of John Walker and born abt 1844 Totley, Derbyshire. Frederick W. Calder was a Solicitor he died 27th April 1884, leaving his wife Sarah with the following children:-
Mary Agnes 1871 Stone, Staffordshire. Known as Miss Poly, died 1914.
Jane Appleyard 1873 Stone Staffs, 1889 became governess to Royal Court of Hapsburg, Vienna. Died 1903 aged 32.

Lucy Hamilton 1877 Derby ( only daughter to marry)
Nellie 1879 Derby Died aged 19 December Q 1897 Belper
Margaret Campbell 1880. Died 1943
*Miss Florence, was my wonderful teacher. The Strutt family of Belper offering Bridge House, (now demolished) to
Mrs Sarah Calder at a very small rent, to start a "Dame School" after the death of her husband. Can you believe that
someone born 1876 did not retire until 1952!
There is a book "Miss Calder's Children" by Narvel S. Annable, which tells the story of the school and the Calder
family perhaps of more interest to yourself is that it contains photos of the house, school and some members of
the Calder family.
There are often copies of the book for sale on e-bay:-
Do send me a pm if you have problems obtaining the book.

Wow, what a coincidence - thank you so much for that information! Coincidentally I was contacted last year by someone who said that a brooch belonging to Florence had been left to a lady's mother, and it turned up at the Antique's Roadshow being worth a pretty penny - I'll track down the link so you can see.
I can't believe I haven't posted here earlier - you people are amazing! :D

Hi,
Yes I know the person who took the broach to the Antique Roadshow as we both attended Miss Calder's School.
I have a wonderful book, which Miss Florence gave me when the school was closing. It is religious stories
she used to read from it every morning, in what would have been our "Morning Assembly", that is if we had been
a large national school.
Miss Florence was very strict, a wonderful teacher not just of the three Rs but in manners, politeness and courtesy.
I eventually married another pupil of Miss Calder's School, by this stage she would have been 91 we were duly sent
for in order that she could give her blessing.
Happy memories.

Thank you Dave, that is fantastic. I've come to realise that my own family tree of publicans, bigamists and petty criminals was in a whole different class to my husband's ancestors!! ;)
Looks like, if I am reading that correctly, Frederick Snr remarried someone called Christiana after Maria's death...
Oh, and incidentally, Spendlove, I successfully bid on the book you linked to one Ebay, so will look forward to receiving that also! Thanks so much for putting me on to that! :D
-
The Rev Frederic(k) Calder (13/9/1785 - 20 June 1851) did indeed remarry after his first wife Maria sadly died 13/6/1825 aged about 36, having borne six children. Fred Snr (as we abbreviate him) married Christiana Waller in Doncaster on 23/1/1828. We don't have a DOB for Christiana, but she outlived Frederick by 11 years. The Bedforshire-born daughter F Calder, noted at Cheltenham in the 1851 census was Fanny Calder, Frederick and Maria's eldest. She never married.
The Rev Frederick (Fred Jnr) married his first wife Jane née Appleyard, in 1841 in Leeds. She died aged only 44 after bearing nine children, of whom the fourth, William, also took holy orders and was the ancestor who came to New Zealand. Their eldest son, Frederick William, married Sarah Walker. Their third child was Florence Sousloff Calder was born 13/3/1876 and lived for 94 years of age, dying in Belper, Derbyshire. She was completely unknown to her NZ relatives (I would have been 25 when she died). She must be the Florence whose brooch began this thread. It is Frederick snr's parents, John and Hannah (née Castelow) Calder of Lincoln, that we are desperate to learn more about.
-
Hi MinnieNZ,
I hope I'm not too late to this conversation. It would seem your husband and I are very distant cousins - my 4x great grandfather is Thomas Calder, the younger brother of Frederic(k) Calder Senior. Thomas (b. 1795) came to New Brunswick, Canada where he sought (and seemingly received) a land-grant in 1821. His descendants frequently crossed the US/Canadian border (I'm from the US side).
I've also reached a dead end on researching John Calder and Hannah Castelow.

Welcome to RootsChat PCalder and CalderNZ, Minnie has been notified of your reply hopefully they will get in touch very soon.
