Title: Old Oxford college blazer badge?
Post by: hascott on Sunday 29 July 12 18:38 BST (UK)
Hello, I have a photo of a chap dressed in a blazer who MAY have been a porter at an Oxford college. I am trying to verify the assumption through identification of the badge itself. It doesn't seem to be a current college badge, but, as ever, I stand to be corrected by anyone who knows!
The badge appears to me to be a St George Cross (?) with a Crown upper left quadrant a sword diagonally and an unknown object (lion head??) in lower right quadrant.
The enlargement is the best I can currently provide.
Any and all help - or suggestions of where to look - greatly appreciated!
Tony

Prue,
Thanks for the link. I agree that the arms that I am searching for are not shown. I have searched Parkers A GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED IN HERALDRY, and can confirm the Cross of St George, a sword (as opposed to a sabre), but what the other device is - I don't know. Perhaps a Lion head or a leopard.
The crown appears to be an 'Earl's crown' - I think!!
I wonder if the blazer badge is 'simply' sporting colours?

Not sure that Oxford porters would have worn such a badge. In my day at another institution the porters wore dark suits and bowler hats, no badges.
