A rellie of mine from NZ came over to the UK to visit family after her husband died. My dad remembers being somewhere between 10-15 years old at the time.
He remembers the name of the boat she arrived on, and the port in question. Is there any way of pinpointing the exact date the ship arrived in the UK?
The ship was called the Rangitoto, which arrived at Southampton. And it would have been around the year 1962.

If that is my Mabel Irene Page then it leaves more questions than it answers. I dont think it is though as my dad remembers the ship called the Rangitoto.
And my dad was around 15 which put the year in question as 1962.
Im not sure where to go now. Any advice?

All info I can find about the ship not sure if any help and I don;t know really where to suggest looking as it apears no lists were kept after 1960

Between 1890 until 1960, a complete record of ships arriving and departing the UK were kept by the Board of Trade. These lists have recently been digitized and present the most straightforward and uncomplicated way of searching for passengers.
After 1960 The Board of Trade was no longer required to collect passenger lists after 1960, although lists may have been kept in some overseas countries or ports beyond this date. For their own purposes shipping companies would have continued to compile passenger lists, but in most cases, these records have not been retained.
After 1960 it was no longer a requirement for shipping companies to deposit passenger lists with UK authorities, and neither P&O nor the UK authorities have any passenger lists after that date.

RANGITOTO / ORIENTAL CARNAVAL 1949
21,809 gross tons, length 609.2ft x beam 81ft, one funnel, two masts, twin screw, speed 17 knots, accommodation for 416 single class passengers.
Built by Vickers-Armstrong, Newcastle for the New Zealand Shipping Co, she was launched on 12th Jun.1949 and started her maiden voyage London - Wellington on 25th August.
1965 the mainmast was removed and a small tripod mast fitted to the funnel to carry the after steaming light.
1966 1st Jan she was painted in Federal Line colours and was officially transferred to Federal Line in 1967.
1969 August sold to C. Y. Tung's Orient Overseas Line, Hong Kong, operated by Oriental South America Line and renamed ORIENTAL CARNAVAL.
1970 Used on a Round the World service out of San Diego.
1975 Laid up at Hong Kong.
1976 Feb scrapped at Hong Kong.[Merchant Fleets, vol.7 by Duncan Haws]

There was a sister Ship Rangitane which came to the U.K. in 1962 from Wellington N.Z.

Are you still interested in arrival dates?
The Times used to publish "Movement of Liners" based on Lloyds reports. Have established arrival dates 1960 - 1963. Any use
(I did post the list but after hitting "Post" all I got was "IE cannot connect etc, etc "- most annoying)

The ship sailed from NZ to Gravesend/London via Southampton. Have extracted info from "Movement of Liners" plus Times adverts of sailing dates. Date of Times publication in 1st column.
RANGITOTO
9 Apr 1960 - from Lyttleton arrived Southampton 8th
29 Aug 1960 - from Lyttleton due Southampton 30th
16 Jan 1961 - called Southampton 15th (en route Gravesend)
10 Jun 1961 - for Lyttleton left Gravesend 8th*
17 Nov 1961 - for Wellington left Gravesend 15th*
9 Mar 1962 - from Auckland due Southampton 10th
24 Jul 1962 - from Wellington arrived Southampton 23rd
5 Dec 1962 - left Southampton for London 3rd
16 Apr 1963 - left Southampton for London 15th
19 Aug 1963 - for London arrived Kingston Ja(maica) 17th (the Times was advertising departure from London/Gravesend 18 Sep 1963*)
* couldn't find an arrival date but would have arrived 2/3 weeks before departure date for NZ

Having difficulty understanding the info. the second one for example. 29 Aug 1960 - from Lyttleton due Southampton 30th.
How could the ship get from NZ to Southampton in 1 day?!?
Or am I not reading this correctly? (Quite probable!)

The Times (thru' Lloyds) is reporting the position of the ship at 29th August - "due 30th" indicates it's 1 day out from Southampton.
"from Lyttleton" identifies port of departure.
NZ to London/Gravesend in 1 day - only if it was renamed the Rangitardis!

Thank you Hanes and Vasquez. I was on board the Rangitoto from Wellington to Southampton 1962 (arrived Southampton July). I have been unable to get a passenger list (per Hanes update). I was travelling with my Mother and sister (both deceased), and there was a woman and her daughter Penny in the cabin next to us. We hit terrific and unusual storms between Wellington and Tahiti, which I now think we’re caused by nuclear testing south of Hawaii during our crossing of the Pacific. We met up with my English Dad at Southampton.. he had flown over. Our steward was Harry, only 19. I also remember a prisoner from another ship being caged across a cable to our ship because the Rangitoto had a gaol. As a child the Rangitoto was just the best! (Sailing back on the Canberra nowhere near as interesting)! If your relative was in that ship I’d love to make contact. If her name is Penny, even better (she would be almost 70, and her Mum perhaps deceased). Cheers
