Does anyone remember a jam factory, called Clock Tower or something similar in Liverpool,in the 1950s.
Probably in Hyton with Roby,
Looking for a Jane Jones who was the daughter of the manager there.
How many Jane Jones were there in Liverpool then with a Jones father from Wales, too many to follow!!!!
So if someone does remember it will be a great help

Think there was a jam factory in Long Lane in Aintree it became a biscuit factory either Jacobs or Crawfords ,the building had a clock tower over the main entrance .
My mind went blank It was Hartleys jam factory, in 1973 I worked as an alarm engineer for Securitas alarms part of Group 4 security and our office was in Hartley Ave ,using Hartleys old offices .I think they also made jam in the biscuit works previously.
-
Hartleys was the only jam factory I remember in Liverpool and that is the one mentioned by clwyd2 above
Hartley's was established in 1868.
Nelson's Preserving Co Limited was also on Long Lane.
-
The labels on the jars had a picture of a clock tower and I am sure that it was not Hartleys.
Are there business directories available anywhere that I could look up

Only if you know the name of the business or its address
-
I believe that it was clock tower,
Owner/manager Humphrey or John Jones, one went from Caernarvonshire to Liverpool and the other to South Africa.
-
There is an antique Hartleys jam jar for sale and it has a lighthouse stamped into the ceramic

I have been talking to my brother and he is convinced that we are looking for Humphrey Jones, born in 1871, daughter Jane born 1900's. She was the one I remember being involved in the jam business.
Thank you for taking time to search for me.

there was also a Jam factory called Nelsons ,it also was in Long Lane ,both long gone
-
So was Humphrey still alive in the 1950s if he was born 1871,and did his daughter Jane marry,or was she a spinster, when she was involved in the Jam factory,
-
Dont know if anyone is interested but there is a book called
BITTERSWEET

Having lived in Huyton from birth until 1964 I don't remember any jam factory.
You must excuse me if I ramble,
Kellys directory of Liverpool 1938

is this in Huyton
Yes it is in the Page Moss area. Very near where I used to live. In 1938 it was Liverpool 14. All the council houses in Huyton came under Liverpool Corporation hence the area code.

Another Liverpool jam factory was Fletts, although there seems little information available.
-
I have an advert for Fletts in a 1930s road atlas. They boast of their jam, honey, bottled fruit,VG Sauce, VG Pickle. Their logo was an eight pointed star with a Liver Bird in the centre.
They were at Everton Valley, Liverpool 4.

Thanks for all the information
Radcliff I do not think that Humphrey was alive in the 50's but I remember his wife Lissie, she must have been in her late eighties, early nineties in 1963.
Daughter Jane, (possibly Elizabeth Jane) did not marry.

Hi,
Just seen the post, so sorry for the time gap.
The Clock Tower Jam Factory was quite definitely Hartley's as many have answered, and it had the Clock Tower [ a number of Photo's around]. In addition Jacobs Biscuits was also close to it in Long Lane, so definitely not at Huyton.
Humphrey Jones was originally a Commercial Traveller for a Biscuit Company, but may well have switched later to Hartleys Jam operation as he lived at Walton.
The daughter was Elizabeth Jane, and there are a number of Marriages for an Elizabeth Jane that would fit her age and Walton Address, but obviously if we now know she didn't marry, then there are no ancestors to tie in with her life in later years !
It looks like Humphrey's death in BMD's at Liverpool North SQ 1953 aged 79, which makes him born around 1874.
Cheers,
Long Tom.

I knew Jenny Jones. She lived at 19 Page Moss Lane next door to my family. You will find her in 1939 Register along with her sister. They moved to Queens Drive near Childwall Fiveways. My sister remembers visiting with our father in the fifties. I found Humphrey in 1911 Census but there was only one child. Perhaps Mary E Jones (1896) was a cousin.
Clock Tower was in Wavertree with a picture of Picton Tower on the label. They made lemon cheese. I can remember the bright yellow contents. Could be it was sold to Hartleys later.
in BMD Jenny Jones died Q1 1974. Born 22 March 1897.
Hope this clarifies things a little.
