Looking for any information re George Pepper born circa 1783 who migrated to Australia. Confirmed via newspaper obituary he was from Wexford, but have no other information. Died in Australia in 1881.
-
Hi. Where did end up in Australia? Do you have his death certificate? Parents names?
I had a quick look at an Irish subscription website, and there seem to have been quite a few 'Pepper's at Clone in Wexford. Do you have his immigration as this could have what parish or townland he was from?
Katharine.

Information on death certificates in 1881 will only have scant information - no details of parents.

Still trying to find immigration details - the obituary I have found is the only clue that I've discovered stating the link back to Wexford. "The deceased, who was in his 98th year, was a native of County Wexford, Ireland".

Hi,
Thought he might have been a convict but could he have been a rozzer.
http://gazette.slv.vic.gov.au/images/1837/N/general/272.pdf
At the end of the second page a George Pepper is appointed a Constable at Goulburn, on 17 Sep 1837. He may have crossed to Australia on a convict ship as a transport guard and not through conventional means.
Found reference to Peppers in the Parish of Ferns, Wexford.

May have nothing to do with your George but provide options for consideration.

Possibly the family came to Victoria first of all? Have son Edward marrying in Portland in 1854 at the age of 28/29 and daughter Eliza marrying in 1856 at age 33.
-
I know a little about Peppers in Wexford and would have a contact who has investigated them quite extensively. Have you any more info., than above? I'm curious about the death cert as I've seen 1860s Australian death records and they seem to have quite a lot of info. on them - much more than Irish death certs., at any rate? Have you a copy of his death cert? If you clarify this, I'll pass on and see what comes up.
I do know of another Pepper who went to Australia - Fanny (Frances) Pepper who married Edward Rynehart in 1852 at Clone Wexford. Fanny was born abt 1831 to Edward Pepper. They subsequently emigrated to New South Wales I think and had family there.

Have the article showing in death
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/77152445?searchTerm=george pepper&searchLimits=l-title=276
Would sincerely appreciate any information.
On the death index via ancestry , it does state his father was Edward.
Will follow through further re death certificate and let you know.

I'll follow that up but suggest you also get the death cert., if it exists. Maybe it varied across Australia but ones I've seen for Queensland have a lot of info potentially, depending on whether it was all collected :-\

Here's an outline of reply re George Pepper, Clone, Wexford:
"I do have a record for this George I think ! from parish reg in R.C.B Clone/Ferns
1818 29th March Thomas born to George and Mary Piper nee James
1825 Feb 13th or 23rd Edward Piper Son of George and Mary Piper Nee James
The name was Piper in reg 1776 to 1815 then some of the family's became Pepper but some held on to Piper for longer by 1830 they were all Pepper and Griffith valuations has it Peppard 1850s"
There's more info - but does this make any sense to you? Would Edward Piper born Feb 1825 fit any of your records of George's family?
-
Oh gosh, yes!
Edward Pepper, born 1825 Wexford, was the son of this George Pepper I am searching who married Mary James. Edward went on to marry Sarah Hart in Victoria. That ties in perfectly! Thank you so much Scollagh ;D
-
Great, that sounds like same man - here's the rest of the reply:
'I hope this is some help, there were about 10 family's of Pipers/Pepper in Clone at this time all with same names - George, Thomas, Edward, John. So hard tell who was who, but I thought this George was son of John and Elizabeth Piper nee Piper (as he was under 10 in 1776 survey) All family's came from Edward and Lidia Piper so George would be Edward and Lidias grand son
There is also a George born 1788 to Thomas and Elizabeth Piper nee smith also grand son of Edward and Lidia
Edward died at Clone Jan 5th 1785 and Lidia 1780'
I'll send you a private message with email contact, so you can pursue further :)

It certainly sounds we are on the right path - thank you so much Scollagh for your help ;D

I am descended from either John Pepper b. aug 16 1789, or Robert Pepper b. feb 15 1778 both of of Tincurry/Clone. They both emigrated to Canada in 1818. Does anyone have any additional information on them and/or their parents, William and Elizabeth (nee Smith) Piper/Pepper?
Thanks!

There is a Peppard headstone at the back of Clone graveyard.Closed to public for renovation currently. It is listed on Cantwells Memorials of the Dead. Also a Peppard couple of Clone were godparents to my RC grand uncles who were born in middle 1850s in Killabeg, Civil Parish of Clone. Nowadays RC parish of Monageer. I was surprised but other religions can become god parents of Roman Catholic children.

My grand uncle Thomas O'Leary of Killabeg, Ferns, County Wexford. Civil Parish of Clone. Sponsors at his Baptism on 24 Dec 1854 • Monageer Parish, Wexford, Ireland
