Title: Martindale & Sons, Undertakers, Dimboola
Post by: Tom Piper on Tuesday 07 August 12 22:18 BST (UK)
I have been following the Martindale family in Dimboola, using Trove, the newspaper resource for Australia. Robert Martindale married Marguerite Harvey in 1882, and they had 6 children. Not having A******y Worldwide, the newspaper resource has been very helpful, but in many reports of funerals in Dimboola, Messrs Martindale & Sons, Undertakers,  organise the proceedings. Now I know that the above Robert Martindale was a joiner by trade, and ran a successful building company in Dimboola, so I wonder if one of his sons ran the Undertakers. Can anyone confirm this?

I wonder if you have seen some of the war service histories for people named MARTINDALE.

Some are digitised and may make interesting reading for you.

Search as a guest using Martindale Dimboola.

One I see (Peter) was awarded the Military medal and his Next of Kin was ROBERT MARTINDALE.

Peter was a bank clerk and writes a rather literary note to to the Officer in Charge of Records in 1935. :D

At this site you can download the digitised will of ROBERT MARTINDALE.

It is detailed and gives further family information.

The arrival in Vic. for ROBERT MARTINDALE I have offered as a possibility is incorrect now that I see his age at death and other particulars about him.

He arrived in SA and some biographical details are available if you need them regarding him and his family.

Robert  and his brother William arrived in 1877 on the Forfarshire a ship sponsored by the South Australian Government. William was married to Esther nee Ward. Robert & William were born in Yapham cum Meltonby, near Pocklington in East Riding of Yorkshire, both sons of George Martindale & his wife Hannah Gowthorpe, sometimes transcribed as Gawthorpe. That surname appears quite often in Martindale families both in England & Australia.

Thanks for the news of the 1904 Directory, confirming that Robert was both builder & undertaker. Does that Directory list them as undertakers later on in the 20th century?

Some great information in government collection-Florence Martindale, the first one in the list, daughter of Robert, she passed her pilot's licence.

There's a lot to follow up there already. I have an obituary for William, showing that he lived in South Australia for seven years then moved to Dimboola, confirmed by showing him being approved for land ownership at Nhill in 1883. Would he have had to buy his land, all 320acres of it?

Hi
William Martindale was  a selector.  The process of acquiring crown land in Victoria involved first the person making a choice (selection) of the block he wanted then making application and payment to the local Land Board.
The land was then surveyed and the land leased to the applicant for a period of time until it was considered "paid off" (Conditions applied!)

This is a summary from a Victorian newspaper item.

Searching Trove, you will find a couple of applications for selections by WILLIAM MARTINDALE to the Lands Board of the district.

Further information on the Selection system will be readily available by using your search engine :D

Sue,

Thanks for providing me with greater understanding of the process William Martindale went through to obtain his land. Also those web sites for military service and wills, has now confirmed that Robert Martindale had a successful building and unertakers in Dimboola up to 1925, when he died, and his son Robert Harvey Martindale carried on the business. Robert Harvey, I can now see had three children, Florence, James Alfred & Robert Lance. In his will, Robert Martindale bequeaths £100 to a Heinrich Hirth, a carpenter,  who I see died in Ballarat, having lived in Dimboola. Robert's son married an Ivy Maud Hirth, (I don't know date), so wonder if there is a connection.

Wm transferred his land in 1887
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0pow/

Many farmers found the acreage allotted was not large enough to make a living.  Many forfeited their allotments as they were unable to fulfil the conditions of purchase and moved to the nearest town seeking work or establishing businesses.  Droughts, rabbit plagues and poor commodity prices also forced settlers to leave the land.  I live on a farming property which originally would have been selected by 12 selectors however the allotments in my area were between 640 and 700 acres.  By 1910 the powers that be realised that 320 was far too small for a viable farm and when the area in which I live was opened for selection, the area was doubled, however that was still not large enough for viable broadacre farming.

Victorian Post Office Directory 1888
MARTINDALE Alice Ladies school  Donald
MARTINDALE Thomas Miner  Clunes
MARTINDALE William  Gerang Gerung

Gerang Gerung is on the Western Highway between Nhill and Dimboola.  My area is to the north :)

There are no MARTINDALE's listed in the whitepages in Dimboola area today.  Perhaps you may find a family contact in the whitepages 25 listings in Victoria and only 72 for all Australia.

I would suggest you contact the Dimboola Historical Society.  Link to their holdings.  Nothing beats local knowledge ;D

What a difference a day makes! I woke up this morning, checked my rootschat and look what there is. Loads to check out now. Good idea to check the Historical Society,-I will also seek out the local library resources. I have sent a PM to Cando.

The Tomato patch death makes sad reading-no wonder William gave up his land, don't think Robert, his brother applied for any, he went into the building business and ran the local undertakers too.

Thanks everyone

Hi Kate,
I am thinking it looks like in November TOM has tried to use a system to contact you  which, as yet you are not able to access.  Namely the PM (or PERSONAL MESSAGE ) system.

You, as a newcomer  need to post 3 messages on the open board before the PM system opens for you to send and receive messages off the board.

You are up to two now, so just reply now (anything you like is fine!!) and I think then the two of you will be able to have a good exchange.

Look forward to the reply.

Robert Harvey Martindale had 6 children, Florence, Marjorie Ellen, Nellie Isobel, James Alfred, Robert Lance, and George.  There are no Martindales left in Dimboola.  Marjorie is still alive, and recently celebrated her 102nd Birthday!

Hi all
In 2016 around Australia Day I met up with Robert John Martindale in Dimboola and we had a look around the cemetery at the Martindale gravestones, and visited the newspaper office where a printing machine was there made near Otley in England. Later that year I went to to see Robert at his home in Melbourne and since then thanks to Rootschat we have been in touch quite a lot and shared our family history information.

Thank you Tom. Much appreciated and if you have a phone contact number for her - that would be fantastic. The last time I saw her was when she was living in Mt. Waverley and I lost contact when she moved. What a wonderful long life she has lived!!
