Title: Baptism lookup please - Susan AKERS
Post by: Poppy Rose on Friday 10 August 12 23:46 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone

Hoping someone can help.

My ancestor Susan Akers married Martin Fairbrother on the 5th November 1831 in Walton le Soken.

Susan has been found in four census on FamilySearch:

1851 census - born 1814 Kirby le Soken
1861 census - born 1821 Kirby le Soken
1871 census - born 1821 Walton le Soken
1881 census - born 1808 Walton le Soken

Her age at burial in February 1887 was 74 years.

Some of Susan's birth years are way out and she was not too sure of her birthplace either!

I have tried Kirby le Soken registers on Freereg for Susan but no luck. In fact there appears to be no Akers at all in Kirby registers.

Susan had an illegitimate son Joseph baptised just before her marriage to Martin in 1831. I am wondering if she too may have been illegitimate.

Thank you  :)

Thank you for finding the information Doran54. :)
It looks interesting.

The only thing is if there is only a birth for Susan and no baptism where would the parents names have been obtained?

The marriage of Susan is too early for a father's name to be on it. Perhaps her parents were living with the Fairbrother family in one of the census.

Hoping someone can help with this.

Hi

I have checked through the parish registers for Kirby Le Soken and can't find any Akers listed. I have also checked the PRs for Walton Le Soken but unfortunately baptisms between 1778 and 1813 are missing. The only Akers baptism I could find in the available PRs is:

All Saints, Walton Le Soken
11 Oct 1815, Martha the daughter of William & Elizabeth Akers from Walton Le Soken (labourer)

Thanks Trish
Looks as if there are two Susan Akers with sons called Joseph. The one I've got was baptised in Walton le Soken on the 9th Oct 1831. :)

Thank you for your kind offer and information Ronnie. :)

Thank you Kevin for checking Kirby and Walton registers. :)
Oh dear! Looks as if Susan was most likely baptised in Walton and is in the missing bit. I suppose she could be a daughter of the William and Elizabeth which were the parents mentioned in Doran's post.

Does anyone know anything about William and Elizabeth Akers - perhaps their marriage or a census record? Their births could also be in the missing section of Walton register.

Hello again
when i was looking through Kirby records at one time I noticed a lot of hewitts and someone on here was looking for them in walton  I told him of my find and he investigated further  They were his people and it appears that the church in walton was damaged in the late 1780s and they had to use Kirby Church
Hope this helps you to work out your family

Hi Poppy

After reading what vabbott had to say about Walton church being damaged, i've had another look through the PRs for St Michaels, Kirby le Soken. Do you think that there could be a variable to their surname??

Sept 13 1811, Susan daughter of William & Elizabeth Ekers

Also found another child of William & Elizabeth

William Ekers 1 May 1808

Marriage
27 Feb 1807 William Ekers & Elizabeth Smith, both single and of the parish of Kirby, married by banns.

Thank you Ronnie for some very useful information. :)

And thank you very much Kevin. I have a feeling you have found Susan and her family! :)

I have just been looking at census indexes for Susan's parents William and Elizabeth and her siblings under various spellings but not having a lot of luck. If anyone comes across them in a census, their deaths, or marriages for Susan's siblings it would be a great help.

Not Susan siblings but I have some decending information from Susans daughter Annie Fairbrother that married a Frederick William Sparke in New Zealand. Annie Sparke (nee Fairbrother) even named a daughter Amelia after her aunt by the looks of it. (Source New Zealand Births and deaths).  At the moment I am trying to find out a bit about their lives/location and I believe somewhere out there there is a Sparke/Heaps book for Southland New Zealand.

Hello whiteout7

I am very pleased to hear from you. Thank you for the information.  :)

Ann Fairbrother, the youngest daughter of Martin and Susan, gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Eliza Fairbrother, in 1872. In the 1881 census the child, recorded as Elizabeth, was a boarder with Ann's sister, Emily Lee, at Walton. Also living with them was Susan Fairbother, Emily's mother.

In October 1874 Ann Fairbrother married Frederick Spark at Walton.

In 1875 Ann and Frederick Spark had daughter Ettie Maude registered in the Tendring district. This district covers the parish of Walton.

And those were the only references I had for Ann and Frederick Spark, or Sparke, until your post came through.

Do you know when they went to New Zealand? You mentioned a child Amelia. Did they have other children born in New Zealand?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

I have just found a record online that has Frederick and Ann Sparke, and Ellie (Ettie) aged three months, leaving London on the 14th July 1875 heading for Bluff.

So it looks as if Ann's other child Eliza, then aged three, was left behind in Essex. I guess she, perhaps, wasn't fathered by Frederick Sparke.

I am not sure, at present, who the 1807 William Ekers burial relates to.

Three children are now known for parents William and Elizabeth Akers:
William baptised 1st May 1808 at Kirby
Susan baptised 13th September 1812 at Kirby
Martha baptised 11th October 1815 at Walton

Son William got involved in what became known as the Kirby Riots, in 1830, and was transported to Tazmania for seven years for breaking a threshing machine at Walton.
Daughter Susan gave birth to a son Joseph Akers, baptised in 1831. She went on to marry Martin Fairbrother and they had eleven children at Walton.
Daughter Martha gave birth to a daughter Louisa Barker Akers, baptised in 1831. Martha married Luke Barker. They moved to Suffolk and had a large family.

William Akers 30 Jan 1840 aged 70. Also Walton le soken.

Thank you Nannyj.  :)

I hadn't realised Susan's mother had died so young. She was Elizabeth Smith, before her marriage, and a baptism of an Elizabeth in Kirby records in 1789 to a Robert and Sarah Smith ties in nicely.

It would make William 19 years her senior. Not impossible I know. Looks like she was born 1789and he 1770? Shame he didn’t last another year for the census!

I hunted around for a remarriage for William in neighbouring parishes, but couldn’t see one. Thought he might have, as he’d have had young children to look after?

Thank you Nannyj for looking for a marriage.  :)
A quick second marriage was often what seemed to happen when there were young children to be looked after. Perhaps a female relative moved in, or there was already one living in the household.

I have been looking for a possible baptism of William on Freereg, around 1770, but, so far, I haven't found one.
