Hi,
I am still trying to trace more members of my Hewitt family.
I have traced John Hewitt, born 1845 in Bricketwood,St Albans & his wife, Mary Ann (maiden name unknown) born c 1843 & their family up to & including the 1891 census, living in the West Ham area of Essex. John snr died in 1895 &, although I have traced the widowed Mary Ann,who is living with her youngest son,Henry (born 1888) in the 1901 census I am struggling to trace her other children; Eliza born 1868,John born 1870,William born 1872,Walter,born 1874,Sarah Ann born 1877,Ellen born 1879 & Mary Ann born 1882. I believe Walter Hewitt may have married his first cousin,Lizzie Hewitt in 1899 but have been unablt to track down the other siblings after 1891.
Can anyone help?

Hi,
I need help yet again with my Hewitt family. I am looking for the family of John Hewitt born 1871 in Greenwich Kent & his wife Ellen born c1872. I cannot trace them in 1901 & neither can I trace John's marriage.

Hi,
LM - I did see the marriage in Bethnal Green, and, like you, think it unlikely to be the correct couple. I would have to order the M/C to be certain.
Ronnie - I don't think that is my John in the 1901 census living in Victor Rd - although his mother was named Mary Ann,she was born in about 1845 & in Bricket Wood,Hertfordshire. John was born in Greenwich,Kent.
Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Is this the on eyou are after?
1901 RG13/1579 FOLIO 34 PAGE 5
17 Dock Road Tidal Basin Canning Town
William Hewitt licenced victuala aged 28 born Beckton
Minnie 30 Tottenham Ct Road
William 10 Deptford
Minnie 9 Deptford
John 9 Beckton
Eliza 4 Beckton
Sarah Ann 4mths West Ham
LM
PS Bearing in mind he is a "lic vic" on this census do you think this is him on 1891 RG12/240 FOLIO 49 PAGE 2
King William St
William Hewitt aged 28 occ barman born E Ham
Also it his the family who moved to Redbourn Herts about 1903 ish ?
-
So, if he is on 1891 as a single man and son William shown as aged 10 on 1901, he must have married Minnie, ( if he did ), after the 1891 census
LM

Hi,
Yes thanks so much - that is the one. Sorry I put the incorrect year of birth as 1891 - but you found it anyway! He may have married Minnie Griffin in Hemel Hempstead Q4 1893 - a couple of years after the birth of son,William.

Hi again,
Yes have found him in 1911,living in Redbourn,Herts, now a farm labourer.

as you know we can't talk about the 1911 openely
I wonder if William born 1891 actually was the son of William, can't find a marriage to Minnie, were the catholic as I can't seem to find baptisms either
LM
-
Hi,
I did wonder that but by 1911,William & Minnie, had been married for 18 yrs,had had 11 children,10 living & 1 dead. I think that they may have been the William Hewitt & Minnie Griffin who married in Q4 1893 in Hemel Hempstead,Herts, but I would need to order the M/C to verify that.
I don't think the family were catholic but I have also had trouble tracing their baptisms & even the registration details for,not only William & Minnie's children, but also other branches of the Hewitt family.

It wasn't till about 1875 that babies had to be registered, up until then most relied on baptisms, I suppose if you didn't want your child baptised he was only on the census, bit hit and miss and very frustrating to us who are hunting them down.
LM
-
Hi,
Yes very - if only they had known the frustration they were going to cause by not registering their children's births!

A John Oliver Hewitt married my grandmother, Mary Ann Baxter (nee Welldon) in 1935.

Hi,
I've had a look at John Oliver Hewitt but, unfortunately, he doesn't seem to be part of the Hewitt family I am researching.
Kind regards,
Coreen
