A few have said that the Thames Advertiser has the same as the Thames Star
1000% nooooooooo
I have set up a double search just with the two papers and the different reporting is incredible
Things about my GGGrandfather for instance and Forest ranger meeting, mine accidents etc

But today I am full on finding new school pupils, the reporting for the schools is totally new
Bye
Althea

PS. Hope the other regional papers are equally impressed :)

Hi Althea - this is interesting. It indicates that two competing papers in one area might actually have a little less overlap than we assumed (clearly true from a genealogical perspective), which has been a point of consideration in our selection meetings. This degree of overlap might be quite variable, a lot might hinge on how two or more entities compete/relate. Still, this is very interesting to know - thanks!

Dear PPast
The reporting is definetly totally different
I am researching schools, Advertiser has totally new indepth reporting,

When it comes to early family like CORNES
the first 50 hits - only 2 are for Thames Star
Now this includes a fatal accident
FATAL ACCIDENT AT THE CENTRAL ITALY MINE.
Thames Advertiser, Volume VII, Issue 1804, 4 May 1874, Page 3

Looking at Thames Star
Thames Star, Volume III, Issue 1667, 4 May 1874, Page 2
They have recorded Clements name as C D CORNS
Advertiser had CORNES

I can already see lots of early businesses that are advertising in Advertiser that i have not seen before
including Edmund Cornes who is starting a private school
Thames Advertiser, Volume VII, Issue 1900, 23 November 1874, Page 2

We had already known this in terms of BMD notices..families place notices in one or the other..but not both

So yes I think well and truly there are real benefits to having two newspapers in the one location - they were probably in competition with one another and what they advertise and write seems to support this.
Bye
Althea
PS. Another reason for this is the fact that for Thames Star there were alot of issues missing/unavailable - no issues for 1876. Now The Thames Advertiser has all this year, this is going to be major for researchers. Part of a key decade of depression and improvements, not previously available

Just want to issue a word of warning to folk about the importance os sometimes looking at the page view

This column
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=THA18741225.2.8&e=25-12-1874-25-12-1874--10-THA-1----2--
looks fine and you would think that the info related to the Church of England Grammar School
I thought it was strange because the teacher mentioned below the blackout has his own school

when you look at the full page view
http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/cgi-bin/paperspast?a=d&d=THA18741225.1.3&e=25-12-1874-25-12-1874--10-THA-1----2--
you can see that the blackout/missing bit is quite large..so I would think that there is another heading for a new school (Karaka School) that is missing then follows Mr Jones report on his school

Bye

I am having problems with the Waikato Times 13 April 1878.

There is a letter to the editor on page two titled "The Boy Francis Brown". I can get the computer-generated text but not the article which comes up as question marks and highlighting with no text.

Hi Charlie,

I saw what you meant.  If you go to page view (click on page 2 at the top) you can download a a pdf of the whole page and you can get the article that way.

Cheers,

KG

P.S I took a screenshot of the pdf for you...

If you right click on it you can 'save image as' if you need a copy.

Hi Charlie, we'll get this fixed, thanks for letting us know. Page two of that issue has a problem.

Kiwi Girl beat me to the workaround though - grabbing the pdf of the page or the issue is the best thing to do in situations like this.

:) Have written a 600 page family history helped majorly by the Paperspast and Turnbull library. The only comment I could make though is that up till now there has only been one true newspaper from Marlborough, it would have been nice to have seen some other views especially on political values from the likes of the Marlborough Press or the Marlborough Times.

The Marlborough Express had a very flimsy flip flop way of changing its views dependent on the owners of the Paper. Because of this, when it had been exalting my Great Great Grandfather for many years, suddenly a change of owners meant they chucked off at almost everything he did! It would have been nice to see what other Papers were still printing at that time. Hope in time you can put up another Marlborough Newspaper or two.

Hi all, this is just to let you know that we've got some more Otago papers coming up in the next month or two.
Also, a clever ex-colleague, positively disposed toward newspapers, has whipped up a very cool list of New Zealand titles based on NZ library catalogue data that I thought you all might be interested to have a quick look at.

http://nznewspapers.appspot.com (http://nznewspapers.appspot.com)

It will give you an idea of how many titles there are, compared to how many are digitised and available online, and will give you a handy list of newspapers by location. If there are any particular titles of interest, let us know :) Not to suggest that we can digitise them straight away of course (or even at all, where copies no longer exist) - but we like to be able to select titles that are going to be of use to people, so any feedback helps us heaps.
Also, if there are any papers not on this list that you know existed (especially if you have copies!), then the library and research communities of NZ would love to know.

Cheers!

Hello,

What an interesting list!

I was amazed to read that there were 58!! Dunedin newspapers.

Would be wonderful if you could consider digitising the "Waikouaiti & Shag Valley Herald, the "Morning Herald" and the "Colonist".

Am looking forward with much interest to the release of more Otago newspapers in the near future.

Thank you for all your hard work. It is very much appreciated.

I'm with you minniehaha about the digitising of the Waikouaiti & Shag Valley Herald. Had lots of rellies down that way who were miners and my Dad grew up there. Not much of anything there anymore (unless it has had a huge revamp in the years I have been away) I am sure there would be bits and bobs about my Wilson family, am very greatful on what has been digitised already in the ODT as I found the death and name of my Great Uncle who drowned at Shag Point when he was only three, and only just three as he hasn't showed up on the bdm site yet .

Hi Gail,

We could be lucky. I had no idea most of those old newspapers even existed.

I too, am most grateful for the digitising of the the 'Otago Daily Times'. Lots of good family stuff to be found there.

I note you have Wilson on your family tree. The name is not on mine but is on that of a relation from the Blueskin (Waitati) area. If your ancestors came from that region, perhaps you could PM me??

Mt Ida Chronicle (1869-1926)
Oamaru Mail (1876-1920)
Timaru Herald (1901-1920)
King Country Chronicle (1906-1920)

No worries, and many thanks from me, as the Oamaru Mail printed a notice from the Blenheim Press by which I learnt that my ancestor in Blenheim was cropping barley on his farm in 1891. Prior to this I had no idea what he farmed. Little things make up a big picture.

Hello everyone!
I just thought I'd let you know that we're running a prize draw on Papers Past to celebrate our 3 millionth page release. The winner will get a framed archival print of their choice from the Alexander Turnbull collections.
To enter, just email paperspast@natlib.govt.nz a link to an article that includes your name (firstname and/or lastname and/or pseudonym), and include your contact details. We'll draw the winner in early november - if any of you fancy a beautifully framed print, send us an entry!

That is all :-)

Hi Spades -

We do have some new material coming to PP not too far away, it's a fairly big release. I have to take care not to tread on the toes of the comms staff by letting the cat out of the bag too soon however, so forgive me for being a little reticent :)

After that, we'll be doing some more Otago titles, and possibly some more from Taranaki and the Waikato.

In the meantime we've been doing some technical housekeeping - we had an outage over christmas that was just appallingly badly-timed, and we're doing some work to make this much less likely in future.

Hi all - update time!
We've recently completed a few changes to our systems that will hopefully prevent the sort of outages we experienced over the xmas break, and now that this has been done, it's time for new content.

We'll have another 100,000-ish pages of content going live next week, and next up after that (probably in May or early june at a guess) we'll be putting out all or some of:

Clutha leader
Mataura Ensign
Taranaki Daily News
Tupeka Times

- these will mainly cover up to 1920, with the Mataura Ensign going up to 1914.

The TDN should be interesting, it's 40,000 pages worth itself and brings much better coverage of Taranaki to PP.

That should see us up to the end of May, and then hopefully we'll have another release shortly after that!

Thanks PAPERSPAST.

You are my favourite site for research. Just not enough hours in my day to do it justice and so, so easy to get side tracked with things of historic interest, that were not part of my original agenda, but need to see the light of day 100 + years later.

Identifying the F ROLLITT [F CARR-ROLLETT] published legacy of hundreds of thousands of words describing NZ of the day, in a large number of articles under pen names, spurs me on. Just jealous that it was not our families legacy, penned by one of our family.

Items I could never have found in the reading room of our local libraries.

Keep up the good work.

- Alan.

I'm really sorry for the technical issues over the last week and a bit folks!

We're rebuilding the data containing the missing images across some titles at the moment, which is taking some time due to the volume of data concerned. This will be fixed by Tuesday, around midday NZT. In the meantime, just switch to the computer-generated text view if you arrive at a missing image.

..and in the middle of that situation, the search function on one of our servers decided that it needed a bit of a breather. It never rains, but it pours eh? We've just sorted this out, so search is back again.

I'm really looking forward to removing that ghastly red text from the front page of the site.

(Also, more new content not too far away now :-)

We've explored this a couple of times, and it isn't off the table. It's different on many levels to a lot of the other content currently on the site, so there are a few new things we need to work through to make it happen, not the least of which is permission!

To paraphrase the poet R. Hunter, it won't happen overnight, but it might happen?

Hi folks,
this isn't a content update regrettably, we've got a problem with search happening at the moment. Browse works fine, so if you know what you're looking for in terms of date, newspaper, etc, you can still get to items.

I'm really sorry for the inconvenience. We've got people looking into this and trying to sort it out. I'll keep you posted!

Hi Helen - possibly not the Dunstan Times, but I know we will get more coverage of that area online over the next year or so, from early 20th century up into the 40's. If we are able to help bring the Dunstan Times online, it will likely be 12 months or more away.

Can I give you a slightly vague soonish? We're doing some pretty substantial stuff behind the scenes at the moment to ensure the site will cope with the amount of content we're hoping to add over the next few years, and our next content release is in the pipeline behind the completion of part of that work. So, because we're juggling a few things, I don't have a firm date, but there'll be more content on the site before long. Worst case, before xmas.

Hi folks, I just wanted to cover off some housekeeping news before we get down to the business of the next batch of new content on PP.

We've had issues with our previous servers timing-out in recent months, and it's been a really tricky problem to get to the bottom of. Folks like yourselves have been most gracious in putting up with the situation, so on behalf of the PP team I wanted to thank you all for your patience.

We've just finished shifting the site across to new servers, and we're now seeing some substantial performance improvements - from inside our network, it's a lot snappier, even visibly just looking at a page loading. I'm not sure if it looks any faster to you folks, but it's possible you may notice a slight difference. Once we know everything has bedded in and survived a bit of a road test, we'll add some new content that we've got queued up. At the soonest, new stuff could be four weeks away.

The new servers will also be used for future versions of Papers Past, which is another interesting development we've got underway at the moment. We've started doing some basic user-testing of a prototype and it's proving a fascinating exercise.

OK, I'll be back with an update on the new content once we know how the rest of the test-drive of the new servers goes.

We're getting back into the business-as-usual after the work we did last year, and our next update isn't far away now folks. We'll be releasing:

Hastings Standard (1896-1920)
Star (extending the current range to 1917)
Press (up to 1935)
Westport Times (widening the current collection to 1868-1884, and also issues from 1886)

I might be out of the office and offline around the release time, but I'm guessing it will be around mid-feb. Enjoy!

Hi Eyesee, we've done a bit of investigation into the Advocate, across two main date ranges. The pre-1920 dates suffer a bit for having very incomplete issue coverage (around 30% coverage between 1907-1920 for example), and we're having problems identifying the publisher/rights-holder for the post-1920 material, for which we have excellent microfilm coverage available.
Regardless, if there's enough demand for a particular newspaper it will have an effect on our digitisation priorities, so if you're really keen to see the Advocate online, let me know and I'll add your request to the list.

Yes we would like to see the Rangitikei Advocate added.

It is mainly the early issues pre 1900 that I am personally interested in, but there are probably others who have research in the Rangitikei district that would be happy to see any of it. It had a wide distribution area and had some things printed that would not necessarily show up in other local papers.

Many thanks

Title: Re: "Papers Past" Updates Part III
Post by: PapersPast on Thursday 05 February 15 03:21 GMT (UK)
Thanks Don! In defence of Trove, the issue is the quality of the underlying microfilm, which isn't something the digitisation process can sway. I don't know anything about the nuances of the selection process for content used in Trove, but I can tell you that when we have an even selection choice between two titles, one with good microfilm and one a bit rougher but otherwise comparable, we'll opt for the better-quality source. The trove team might have a slightly better budget, so if they get faced with the same choice they might just do both of them :-)
Title: Re: "Papers Past" Updates Part III
Post by: PapersPast on Thursday 05 February 15 03:34 GMT (UK)
Sorry, I meant that the issue is *mainly* to do with the quality of the microfilm. The OCR algorhythm used will vary things a little bit too.

:)  Thanks Papers Past - we all appreciate your efforts.  I know I have asked previously, but I get asked a number of times (volunteer at a Central Otago museum) when the Dunstan Times will be on PP?

We still don't know exactly when (we never really do until it's pretty close) but I know that we have done some work on this recently to get some master microfilm made. This is needed prior to digitisation of content, so to me this suggests that it's somewhere from 8-24 months away. I know that's a wide and vague date-range, but it's the nature of this type of workflow unfortunately.

On another note, we now have that new content I mentioned up and running on the site. The data copy took a bit longer than we anticipated - enjoy!

Hi folks!
It's nearly update time again. Early next week we will be bringing the newspaper part of the Niupepa collection into Papers Past, which is a significant collection of Maori language publications - this means that those of us with a bit of Maori ancestry might be able to get a bit more representation in the search results on PP. This content was previously available on the NZDL Niupepa page (http://www.nzdl.org/cgi-bin/library.cgi?a=p&p=about&c=niupepa) created by University of Waikato's Department of Computer Science, to whom we owe some huge thanks - the work they did on this was instrumental in informing the subsequent steps we took in developing Papers Past itself.

Anglo-Maori Warder (1848)
Haeata (1859-1862)
Hiiringa i te Whitu (1896)
Hokioi o Nui-Tireni, e rere atuna (1862-1863)
Huia Tangata Kotahi (1893-1895)
Jubilee : Te Tiupiri (1898-1900)
Kahiti Tuturu mo Aotearoa, me te Waipounamu (1894-1896)
Karere o Poneke (1857-1858)
Korimako (1882-1890)
Matariki (1881)
Maori Messenger : Te Karere Maori (1842-1863)
asian o Matariki (1892-1935) - (Please note that this title is spelled P-A-K-I o Matariki (which translates as Pleiades News), but this forum app erroneously interprets this Maori word as a racist term for a person of Pakistani origin and swaps it for the more generic term "asian", which is why you can see "Asian o Matariki" listed)
Pihoihoi Mokemoke i Runga i te Tuanui (1863)
Puke ki Hikurangi (1897-1913)
Takitimu (1883)
Waka Maori (1863-1884)
Wananga (1874-1878)
Whetu o te Tau (1857-1858)

And then, shortly after that, we'll be putting out another update, containing:

Manawatu Standard (1916-1920)
Manawatu Times (1916-1920)
Manawatu Ensign (1915-1920)
Nelson Evening Mail (1919-1920)
New Zealander (1853-1866)
Patea Mail (1875-1903)
Pukekohe and Waiuku Times (1921-1924)
Southland Times (1906-1920)
Waikato Argus (1896-1914)

Phew...busy times!

PapersPast is brilliant. I recently subscribed to the British Newspaper Archive (which costs $20/mth), so hooray that PP is free. The character recognition in BNA is very poor, it fails to find words completely quite often. What I do like though is that the search results screen show a portion of computer generated text so you have a fair idea at whether the result it does find is relevant to you or not. In PP you have to click and read everything which can take a bit of time. I think if PP combine their excellent search engine with BNA's result screen format it would be the best thing since chocolate.

All in all though, a service that finds all results (PP) is far better than one which only finds half (BNA).

Well done PP, excellent work.

I did not know that! Thank you very much, now PP is perfect. That's even better than what BNA does, as its computer generated text often resembles gobbledy-gook.

Is there a way of refining the search results to show only certain things, like they do on Trove, and the British newspapers.

EG if you only want BMDs to show, not all the adverts and other results.

Trove has it as 'Public Notices' I think and BNA 'People'

Thanks

Hi Ian, there's a few different ways to go about this. Firstly, our content types (article, advertisement, illustration) are a bit more coarse than Trove or British Newspapers, but do note that they can be selected independent of each other.

However, I think you'll get much better mileage out of well thought-out keyword searches across all content types, because this way you'll get the results you want irrespective of whether the content types have been mis-indexed or not. So instead of thinking of content types, think of the key words that would have appeared on the item you are looking for (eg, search for "Richard Jones rest peace" in a relevant date range for the notice).

Also, don't be afraid to use a few well-chosen boolean operators! Eg,

Richard Jones -world +peace +rest

- would be a good term to use if that first search query happened to bring back extraneous results relating to "world peace".
You can also combine ALL WORD searches with PHRASE searches by using speechmarks on an all words search - eg:

Richard Jones "rest in peace"

- This can get you to a result very quickly, especially if combined with a date bracket, even one spanning several months. Essentially all of this means that you might not browse BDM stuff in Papers Past as much; instead, you do very specific searches for specific deaths.

As an aside, sometimes on Papers Past, while classifieds/BDM notices often end up in the "Article" category, sometimes you'll see classifieds and BDM notices in the "Advertisement" category. Often this is because you've got a large vertical column of stuff that mixes ads, classifieds, and BDM notices, and it can be ambiguous to our indexing/descriptive work. This means the BDM stuff isn't necessarily all in the one place unfortunately, so I strongly recommend using keywords instead. If you get stuck, just reply here and I'll help you out :-)

Can I add a suggestion? My searches usually involve all papers for a region. I know you can select multiple papers by using CTRL-Click, but the list of papers is getting longer making this task a wee bit more tricky than it should be. Have you given thought to a "search all papers for this region" option once you've selected "by region" from the home page?

Tried the "Show Preview Images" option yesterday and whizzed through 64 pages in no time where as before hearing about that option would give up in despair, so thank you Beg and also Papers Past I found an advertisement in Waka Maori 12 April 1879 that has opened a new path on the  search for the elusive Poswillo family.

Hi Spud, this is firmly on our radar. We're working on an updated interface at the moment and this is one of the changes we've planned.

That said, except for birth notices (which are alway region-specific) I would encourage you to search across all papers instead of focussing on one region - people often underestimate how extensively content was federated in NZ compared to some other countries. This means that if something happens in the Bay of Plenty on Tuesday, you'll find reports about it in other papers across the country on wednesday, often with more or less text depending on the editorial needs of the day.

Hi, Papers Past Team,

Although we often pass on our thanks and appreciation for all the work you do arranging the digitisation of newspapers, I would like to note three recent discoveries made on Papers Past which have advanced the knowledge of my family.

Idly scrolling though the site recently I stumbled across isolated references to two individuals I had been searching for for some time; the first was the death by drowning of a young man in Queensland. I had thought he had died in infancy, but this reference led me to the discovery that he had married in Queensland only three weeks prior to his death and that his wife was pregnant with his daughter.

The second was an inquest for a widowed g-g-g-uncle who emigrated to Otago after his sister and her family. I had never considered the possibility that he would have emigrated, and the report led me to find the later lives and death of his three daughters, all of whom he left behind in Scotland as young unmarried women.

The third and very recent discovery is a passing reference in the Grey River Argus of 1896 to a very elusive g-g-uncle living in Western Australia. He left his wife and family in Westland. I am hopeful that this might lead to a record of his death.

So thanks very much for all your time, effort and dedication, Papers Past Team. You're making a huge contribution to family history.

Regards,

Spades

It sure is awesome, especially if you have been searching for ages, and then the day comes  you get that nagging feeling that you need to search, you find them :D

Can I ask a question regarding photo's?  I found a real good one of my great uncle in his deep sea diving gear for Auckland Harbour broad back in the 1930's along with many articles about his work. (Thanks Paper's Past)
I have downloaded the image but it is looking like a newspaper print with large dots.  Would any of these photo's still be able to be brought or held with the news paper in concern?

Thanks
Suzy W

I've never seen photos in Papers Past. When did NZ newspapers start printing photos?

Not sure about other newspapers, but prior to the beginning of the 20th century there were photographs in the 'Otago Witness'........

Wow, good digging there Spades! This is great to hear, thanks for the kind words, and thanks so much for all your support over the years.

Spudkiwi and SuzyW, regarding photographs:
The scans of the pages reproduce the newsprint quality so the images are variable, often ranging from adequate to poor. You may be able to get a reproduction from an original image or even a negative, depending on the paper and the image. I would suggest getting in touch with the publisher in the case of titles that went to Fairfax, NZME (formerly known as APN), or Allied Press. For Fairfax images, cross your fingers that they didn't get lost in the recent Rogers' Archives incident - though note that the National Library has a large archive of Evening Post photographic images, so you might be covered on that front.
NZ Herald and ODT stuff should be relatively accessible too, get in touch with NZME or Allied Press respectively and they'll help you out.
With other papers, it can be quite case-by-case. Seeing if the title still exists and giving the publisher a call is the best first step.
If the image on PP is the only remaining copy, then you might do slightly better by grabbing the high-res .png download of the page the image is on, and cropping the image out. You can then scale it down, at which point it might actually look much better.
