my ancestor was a servant at somewhere called Knapton in the 1840s . How might I find records relatin to this
-
Knapton is a townland in Abbeyleix parish. In Griffiths Valuation for 1850 there were just 5 households listed. The largest by far was that of Wm Brownlow Esq who had a farm, offices (outbuildings) and 127 acres. That seems the most likely property for your ancestors to have worked if they were servants. The Brownlows had left by the time of the 1901 census.
Knapton today is off the R433 south of Abbeyleix town.

Thank you for this. It has helped me as I can see online that William Brownlow was a deputy lieutenant of Monaghan and is listed as living at Knapton House. There also seems some family link with Abbeyleix. so there are some old estate papers to plough through.

Hi there,
Do you want to give us the names of your ancestors to see if we can find anything ?

yes indeed.
The person particularly associated with Knapton was a Thomas McKenzie (sometimes spelt MacKenzie or M'Kenzie). The information I have on him is limited but he was married in Kilkenny at St Canice in 1864 to an Emelia Wetherley. He is described on the marriage record from Rootsireland as a "servant" from Knapton. He seems to have moved (possibly with the family?) to the areas of Knocktopher and Thomastown as his wife and child died there and he is described as a 'butler' on the daughter's death certificate in 1873.
Thank you for your offer.

Hi there,
Did you get anywhere with this as I too am searching for Thomas McKenzie who is my great great grandfather.
I have some basic info on him and his father John but am struggling to find birth or death records etc.
My family are all based in Scotland so its amazing to see that we have Irish ancestry as well.
Regards
Steve

Welcome to Rootschat Steve.
Daughter Sarah's birth cert 1871 is now free to view online, she was registered without a first name.

Her death cert and her mother's should be free to view before the end of this year (fingers crossed)

Sadly that's how it is for everyone, registration of births and deaths didn't start until 1864 and the Certs aren't as detailed as in Scotland.
Were they Church of Ireland?
-
I'm not sure as its an area of the family I have only just discovered.
Still busy tracking down what paperwork and photos my family might have that will shed some light on things.
-
I had a very quick look in the RC St.Canice's but didn't see them.

According to the register entry it was United Church of England & Ireland
-
Yes there is a St.Canice COI as well in Kilkenny, you can see what records RootsIreland have here

Fairly unlikely there are anywhere else online but I haven't checked.
-
As you have the marriage what was Amelia's father's name?

Thanks for this, much appreciated.

it will be if you don't include full details of what has been found!
