For anyone else looking, "Clearford" is the transcription of the place of birth on the 1871 census.

Reference RG10, Piece 2941, Folio 133, Page 16
Household schedule 78.

Not very clear, but I can also see Clearford! ;D
Which doesn't seem to exist.

I will ask a Mod to move this to Ireland, where some expert researchers might be able to help?

Hello Frankiejude and welcome to Rootschat  ;D

I have been trying to say Clearford with an Irish accent, but it's not getting me anywhere  ;D

Just wondered what the enumerator may have thought he heard.

Again for anyone else looking Michael he is down as 58 in 1871 but the index looks more like 38?

Did they marry in Ireland?

They are in Wolverhampton in 1861 too, transcribed as DICKSON.
He's just born in Ireland, and she in Brewood Staffs, oldest child is James born in Wolves in 1856.

RG9/1991 Folio  14  Page 21

In 1881 he is also just born in Ireland, and by 1891 Elizbeth is a widow and living with a married daughter.......Hmmm.

Are there any clues as to his fathers name on the marriage cert?

http://www.irish-place-names.com/ gives a few possibles Clifford in Cork, Crawford in Fermanagh and Cranford in Donegal.
Saying Clearford over and over I'm most inclined to go for Clifford, but you just need somthing more, a county a least.

To an English person hearing his Irish accent I wonder if it says Clare (as in County Clare?) something?

I played around with it a bit, not sure it helps any but worth a try.
At this point I wouldn't even be sure it starts with a C.

Clare Island,Co Mayo?

Who were the witnesses to his marriage?

Sometimes they prove to be siblings of the bride and groom.

Hi there

Presuming that it's a townland that Michael has given here are a list that begin with cle*

 cle* townlands of ireland (http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/cgi-bin/iresrch)

OR

 cla* townlands of ireland (http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/cgi-bin/iresrch)

'carol...' what does the transcription of the image say for his wife's place of birth as 'to me' the first letter of her's and Michael's place of birth look the same !

Frankie the site that I have given you the link for can be played around with to see if you can narrow down the search with more letters from the word that you are sure of.
