Title: Andrew Nairn Kathrine Tod
Post by: selby1977 on Friday 31 August 12 21:31 BST (UK)

Hi
I'm looking for any information at all on 6x greatgrandparents Andrew Nairn and Katherine Tod who must have been born around 1740 and had a son James born 1769 in Ayton Berwickshire- I don't know where Andrew and Katherine are from in Scotland but may have been Fife or Lothian area.

The information I have about the family is sketchy but they were agricultural workers and lived in Berwickshire - Oldhamstocks, Eccles and Coldingham.

Thanks a lot
Barbara

I am looking for this very couple. Their names are only found once in the Ayton register of 1769. No other trace has been found, its a real brick wall. keeping my eyes peeled on this post as Andrew and Katharine are my direct ancestors, at least their son James is and suspect he is the James Nairn who married Christian Redpath 1792 Longformacus Register.

Hi

Sorry I have not seen this reply as I have not looked at ancestry for a while- I have no further information other than descendants of Katherine and Andrew

Yes Barbara, this couple are very elusive indeed as I have only one record of them in 1769 Ayton, Berwickshire and that is with over 40 years trying to work out why that should be. Perhaps and I have come to the conclusion Andrew Nairn and maybe also Kathrine came from Fife to have James their child christened away from another family either of them may have had in Fife.
Are you descended from the Nairn family through the Maughan surname? I have some information on that connection.

Does the baptism record state he was lawful or natural son?

Baptism shows he was lawful son, perhaps I should be looking for a marriage, but over the many years trying to locate this or other mention of Andrew Nairn and Katharine Tod nothing has come of it.

Hi Histcoll

My connection is Andrew and Katherine are my 6x great grandparents and the line follows:
James-married Christian Redpath
James- married Jane White
Christian- married Andrew Cowans
Thomas Oliver Cowans - married Elizabeth Maughan
Lily Cowans was my maternal grandmother

I don't know if that was the Maughan family that you have information for!

Okay I can tell you that Andrew Cowens wife Christian Nairn was sister to my G.G. Grandfather. Not the family I was thinking off, but I do have Andrew Cowens and family in my tree. No knowledge of Thomas Oliver Cowens, was he their son? Had a quick look at the Census records for him his wife Elizabeth and Lily but not found, can you help locate.

Also in my tree is a James Nairn married Elizabeth Maughan 1897, Woodhorn, Northumberland. This couple are also related to us.

Hello

Sorry I missed a generation!!  - Christian and Andrew Cowans'  son James Nairn Cowans and Jane Ann Oliver were the parents of Thomas Oliver Cowans. They married in Morpeth 1908 in Primitive Methodist Chapel. Lily, my grandmother was born 1909. In 1911 census they lived in Trojan Street Stakeford. Elizabeth died in 1914 in Bedlington Station- just a note my records spell Cowans with an A not E so may make a difference when looking up census

James Nairn and Elizabeth are also in my tree - my 1st cousin four times removed

Hope this helps

Barbara

Been checking the family out. I have added what I found to my tree. Interesting that James Nairn Cowans went to Canada with his daughter Jane Ann, the rest of the family stayed behind, and think I am right in saying they left 6th May 1911, the ship log has only the two of them listed. Sad James wife died young and also Elizabeth the wife of Thomas. These were hard times for all concerned, but without them going through life's ups and downs none of us would be here.

Thanks for all your information, keep in touch

Hi James and Jane Ann had 5 children Hannah married in 1907 to William Stobbart they went to Canada in 1911 too James Henry travelled to Canada 1912 and as you know Jane Ann travelled with her father. They all settled in Nanaimo Canada.  Thomas Oliver and Andrew stayed in England.

I have come across any sad stories in my journey through family history many die young often in child birth or soon after due to child bed syndrome which was caused mainly through bad hygiene. Thankfully those times have changed!!

Thanks for the update on your family. According to tree information we are 4th cousins, happy to know it.

I will keep watching this post, I would just love to find out the mystery of Andrew Nairn and Kathrine Tod. I wrote a booklet many years ago which is in the Scottish Record Office, here is an excerpt as two attachments, let me know if you can view
