The first few times on Rootschat can be a bit daunting for some people.
In the beginning (2004) it was a lot easier as we didn't have the sheer mass of topics and replies. As of writing we have just under 4 Million postings so we need a structured layout to make it easier to find topics of interest.
But don't worry about that for the moment, just bear these two points in mind:
1) To start a topic:
- Either go to the board where you wish to post, or,
If you are not sure where best to post, simply go to the Beginners board (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=post;board=47.0)
- click on the button (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/english/new_topic.gif) at the top or bottom of the page, and
- ask your question :)
If the moderators feel your topic will get more coverage on a particular board, then they will move it to that board.
2) To reply to any topic,
- just click on the (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/english/reply.gif)-Button at the beginning or end of any topic
You can find helpful information to most questions in the (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/Themes/history/images/english/help.gif) (http://www.rootschat.com/help/help_index.php)-Pages.
If you can't find an answer to your question(s) there, just start a new topic on
the "How to use Rootschat" board: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,287.0.html
Rootschatters are generally very friendly and helpful, so don't worry about it, if you feel your contribution is not 100% perfect - we all learnt here "by doing" :)
By the way, we don't have an "official" site-map of the various boards, but here's a good way of finding out what we have:

The search page shows a list of all the available boards and sub- or child-boards.

I'm a bit puzzled. I got a really helpful message reply from my post but can't see how to reply to say thankyou.
Also I thought there were some other posts/messages which referred to my post but now I can't find them as they looked really good as well. Is there a procedure or knack that I need to use when reading replies/posts?

Simply click on the button which says 'reply' and compose your reply in the box which then appears. When you've written it click on the word 'post' at the bottom left.

Winston, I know Jen has already answered your specific question, but you might find this useful as well - it's something I do when I want to track back on previous posts.
From the front page, go to the tab in the row at the top (from Welcome to Logout) and click on 'Profile'. That gives you your own details and there's a really useful link at the bottom of that box showing you your own previous posts. That allows you to scroll back to any topic you've posted on before, no matter how long ago.

Hi I am a newbie. My problem was that my registration kept getting refused as my email address was known to be subject to a virus or something.
Eventually i checked your password suggestions and followed them to the letter - i.e. 6 digits or more including numbers and letters upper and lowercase. My reg was accepted! ;D
I think your PW "suggestions" should be stated as definitive. I'm used to needing a combination of letters and numbers but upper and lower case is a new one on me! Telling me I had a virus put me in a panic!!

I find this site so frustrating ??? I have tried to follow the guidelines (?) but am constantly wondering where I should go next to either read a reply or post another message which may or may not be on my e mails. Is it me or do others have the same problem ? Perhaps I haven't spent long enough working out how the site works

I am very new here (last night) and posted on a thread. I received a reply back from that person in the form of a message, but I can't respond back in kind. I don't know how to go about keeping contact with this person now, and yet it has been determined that our trees align. When I looked in the help section it said that I can't send or receive private messages until I have posted three (I guess this counts as my second?) but this person was able to send to me? I am confused...

You'll be able to reply now because you've made more than just one post. There's a restriction on what people can do when they first post, but now you're ok.
Try and send them a message again and it will work :)

Welcome to RootsChat.
When you reply to a thread on RootsChat everyone who has replied will normally get a email notification. You are best to reply to the end of a thread in the first instance, if there is any problem with a persons email not working they bounce back to me so that I can fix the problem.
You can message someone by PM (Private message)but if there is any problem with PM's they are not investigated any further.

Hello,
Is it me or is this site almost impossible to use. I have been clicking all over the place for the past 20 minutes and have finally got to somewhere I can type a question. Please tell me in simple terms how to use this site before it drives me batty.
I have some photos (well sort of photos) I would like to be made a bit better does anyone know who can do them for me. They are of my 5 great uncles who served in WW1 all at the same time.

Greetings, just signed up and like the look of the forum.
My wife has been working on her family tree for years, but I've never been really interested, but after a trip back to NZ early this year, and talking with my uncle, I realized that I knew very little about my fore bearers. When I got to the old home town I found out I was a descendant of a local identity.
So got to get busy, and see what else I can find out..... ;)

You need a post count of 2 or 3 to use the system which you now have.
So you can now reply to the personal message, but it would also be good if you can reply on the topic here

I know it's tricky finding your way around when you're a new poster, so check your emails for notification that a reply has been received, your profile is set that you only receive the notification of a first reply so you may miss them, but when you log in to Rootschat, there is a button at the top of the screen [New Replies], if you click on that you should also see the topic listed.

Hi I am new to this site and Forum, but I am a member of other Forums and for the life of me this is so confusing in trying to set up a profile Avatar >:( I have read various threads on this site over the past hour trying to figure out how to do it, I know all about Shrinking and use Resize my image as a tool. I read on one thread on this subject go to Profile the Roote chat Profile information click on I will Down Load my own picture the Browse remembering to Change Profile once completed.
Now when I go to Profile I do not get any of these options Why ? ::)
I am beginning to think and I may be wrong that one has to make over three post before any thing happens ? If that is the case why not just tell me that to begin with, rather than me trying to figure how to work this site. If that is not the case Please help this exasperated new member

Just in case I need to make 3 post for Pandora's box to open I will introduce myself.
I have been working on my Family tree since 1982, long before the internet, I was initially researching my Great Grandfather after my grand mother passed away in 1979 and I received his WW1 Discharge Certificate coloured and framed dated 25 may 1918 having been wounded in the Great War. I had his Regimental Number and unit Royal Engineers I made contact with a retired Lt Col in the USA who was an expert on the British RE, he confirmed that he was a member of 183 Tunnelling Company RE, it was not until 2010 that I was able to obtain his full military papers from Ancestry where I discovered that on his Attestation papers 30th September 1915 landing in France 17th October 1915 that he served for 7 years and 155 days with the 2nd BN Seaforth Highlanders from 1883 to 1889, this was a Revelation to me as I myself has served 25 years 254 days in HM Armed Forces, and my Grand Mother never talked about her fathers military service. I have now over 600 people on my FT dating back to 1500's. My personal line I can only get as far as 1777 in Northern Ireland, require help researching parish records, I am the 14 of the same name.

My Family Tree is on Ancestry "Dunn" My main interest is in military history and I am a member of the "British Medal Forum" also the "Great War Forum" also the " Victorian Wars Forum" these are excellent Forum with experts in there field and more than willing to help any one with a question from identifying Medals, working through Medal Rolls, access to Unit War Diaries, specific uniform identification etc.

3.Select Upload an avatar from the personalised Picture option.

I was right you required to make a couple of post before you can do any thing regards your Profile so in future to all future new members do not waist time trying to find out how to create a Profile just make a couple of posts and it all opens up for you ::). Why one can not be told this on the introduction to the Site/Forum completely eludes me, all very confusing, But up and running now.

Thank you, I have been on the Armed Forces Board it is very interesting and one of the reasons that I joined Rootschat. Over and above doing family tree research I collect miniature medals and one of the joys is attributing the group to an individual then researching the persons life history.
I have an interesting group which I have had for over a year and only in the past 3 months have I found out who they belong to. Major Hugh Ross Macintyre, DSO, MC + Bar, WW1 Trio with MID, MD, PHD, Royal Army Medical Corps. His back story is fascinating born in New Chwang China 1882, (his father was a missionary) Educated in Edinburgh Scotland George Watsons College then Edinburgh University, first practise Yorkshire 1911, went to war 1914 ended up 23 Division 69 Field Ambulance Italy 1919, took a PHD in Oxford 1919, he and his wife also a Doctor in a Sanatorium in Liverpool manly for wounded soldiers where he died on 23 February 1932.
I still have a lot to research yet but mainly find in a photograph would be the icing on the cake.

Hello, just getting started with RootsChat. Ive been looking for a way to find others researching the same names and areas. Ill be looking for Curran's in Braade Upper near Glencolmbkille, Ireland and McLaughlin's in Templemoyle and Dunross in Culdaff Co. Donegal. Ive found both ancestors in the 1901 and 1911 census now Im trying to piece together their relatives.

Right down the bottom of the page you will find Surname Interests. Click on it and you will see "quick search". Then click on the letter of the name you want.

Due mainly to a chance reunion with a school friend from 40 years ago I find myself delving into my family's past.
I found RootsChat by accident when following a Google search and a brief look through confirmed that it is the answer to (most of) my prayers. Even after a brief look through I have picked up so many hints and tips that would have taken me months (or years) to find out for myself.

I might as well mention my areas of interest:-Bullocks and Rayners of North and East London, McCallows of Merthyr Tydfyl (later East London) and a certain Mr Alfred Leslie Stanley Leighs, the father of my maternal grandfather's first wife (Dora Leighs). From what I have read of him so far on RootsChat he is a bit of a mystery.
