Title: Plunkett and Mitchell families - Monequid
Post by: maggiegorey on Tuesday 11 September 12 15:26 BST (UK)
Hi

Is there anyone out there who can tell me how to get further than 1812 in the Rosenallis/Mountmellick records??

I got as far as George Plunkett, born in 1812 in Monequid/Cappalough.
He died in 1892, and was a blacksmith, as were most of the family.

He married Mary Bryan (Brien) in 1856 approx.

Cant trace his parents - only possibility I have come up with is an Owen Plunkett/Anne (unknown), with a further possible link to an Oliver Plunkett.

Georges son George married Catherine Mitchell, whose parents were William Mitchell and Margaret wright (at least thats where Ive ended up), and Margarets parents were John Wright and Julia Conroy.

Williams parents were Cornelius Mitchell and Margaret Conroy (?) - its possible there was a family connection i.e. cousins

Is anyone ouyt there related to this family??

Mountmellick registers (I'm assuming this family were RC) go back to 1814, so that's as far as you can go with regard to baptism and marriage information in that parish. Records for Rosenallis parish go back to the 1760s, but with large gaps - e.g. other than a few months of 1782 there are no baptism records available between 1777 and 1823...

Hiya Maggie,

The free index on ifhf shows 8 children born to George Plunkett and Mary Bryan - have you tried tracking down any of the others to see if you get any leads ?

Hiya Maggie,

Plunkett is not really what I would call a Laois surname ???

Have you tried throwing your net a bit wider ?

He didn't name any of his son's after your 2 suggested names and given naming patterns at the time I would have expected to see one of them, although there are always exceptions to this rule.

BTW FAB views in Rosenallis  ;D

I'm wondering is there a connection to that Anthony and this one, and your Francis

Hi Maggie,

Sorry with the Francis, meant to say George !

The Anthony reference was the fact that there was an Anthony Plunkett of a few records and I thought he might be related somehow !

He would have been a couple of years older than George Senior !

Glad Imnot the only one who nods occasionally!

Will ask the cousins if they remember any reference to an Anthony.
Thanks again for the links Tara - am going to print the page and bring it with me to Tullamore when I go.
