Title: Some early male American lawn tennis players
Post by: newmark401 on Wednesday 19 September 12 18:40 BST (UK)
Using a variety of sources, I've been able to find a good deal of information on a number of early American lawn tennis players. However, I've had some difficulty in finding anything on certain players, all of whom competed in the early decades of the sport (circa 1880-1900).

I'm looking for a date and place of birth and a date and place of death for the following players as well their middle name (in a number of cases I've added the university they attended):

Clarence R. Budlong (Brown)
--

Edwin P. Fischer
--

Arthur E. Foote (Yale)
--

Raymond D. Little (Princeton)
--

Stephen C. Millett
--

Charles P. Hubbard (Stanford)
--

Carr B. Neel
Samuel R. Neel

These two players were brothers.
--

Howard A. Taylor (Harvard)
--

Samuel G. Thompson (Princeton)
-----

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

This might be Clarence Budlong - http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Budlong&GSiman=1&GSst=42&GSsr=41&GRid=57897404&  Various sites indicate that he was playing for Brown in the late 1890's, so the age looks like it may be right.

Piecing bits and bobs together - Think this could be Howard Augustus Taylor born in New York about November 1865.

1900 Census shows him with a wife Gertrude Murray Taylor. Howard was a lawyer. The couple were divorced by 1910

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MSKN-FBV

Reading this extract below - mentions - Howard matriculated to Harvard University after preparing at St. Paul's School, graduating in 1885. At Harvard, Howard was a member of the Cricket Club and varsity Tennis Team. While at Harvard, Howard Taylor captured the NCAA singles and doubles tennis championship in 1883.

http://deanremembers.blogspot.co.uk/2011/09/tennis-chamption-howard-taylor.html

It also mentions a daughter Prudence Palmer BUT I think this was his grand-daughter, Prudence Taylor was the daughter of his son Murray (aged 4 on the bove census)
Prudence was born 19 December 1930 Cobalt. Connecticut. Died 17 October 2003
This was the obituary for Prudence which confirms the above.

The web-site below mentions the marriage of Howard and Gertrude

Hi, Sandra,

I think I had a different Edward Whitney in mind; in fact, I might have been on the wrong track because I was really thinking of some early players from the west coast of the United States, in particular California. One of these was George F. Whitney, several times champion at the early Pacific Coast Championships; I'm quite he sure wasn't related to Edward H. Whitney, or at least wasn't his brother.

Some of the other early Pacific Coast singles champions were the following:

Thomas A. Driscoll
--

Louis R. Freeman
--

George C. Janes
--

John Drummond MacGavin
--

William H. Taylor
--

Charles R. Yates
-----

As I've indicated, most of the above players were probably born in or near California. I know virtually nothing about them.

Regards

Mark

Mary Browne, well known in Oxnard, the little tennis star, is out of danger, so far as the Mexican revelution is concerned. Miss Browne went to Mexico City several weeks ago with other Southern California tennis players, to take part in the National tournaments scheduled to be played in Mexico City.

She has not been heard from and much anxiety has been felt as to her welfare by her relatives and friends. Word has come, however, to her brother, Nat Browne in Los Angeles, that Miss Mary was safe.

Could be a variation in the surname Gadesden not alot is coming up.  ???

Valentine Gadesden -  r. Palace Hotel
Business Name: Gadesden & Blagrave  Year: 1890 - San Francisco. California
They seem to be financiers.

You might like to look at the site http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ which may be helpful for Valentine Gadesden and some of the other tennis players.
A Valentine Gardesden went to Califronia from England in 1887 and later engaged in mining, ranching and real estate transactions. Think he was involved with Lady Yarde-Buller and named in a case brought by her husband for divorce. (The San Francisco call., November 16, 1904)

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0rkr/

Mentions of Valentine Gadesden here:- Lady Mary Leilah Kirkham Yarde-Buller

 http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=68191651

There was a Valentine Ion Gadesden of the Chantry. Norwich estate agent died 20 th September 1896 at Bad Nauheim. Germany. Administration 26th October to Florence Marie Armroid Gadesden spinstee - effects £12  10s

If he was born in England - could this be him (its a pretty unusual name)

Valentine Jon Gadsden   - Baptism Date: 25 Jul 1858
Father's Name: John Burnet Gadsden  - Mother  Esther Gadsden
St Marylebone St Luke. Westminster. London

Could be a scholar at Surrey County School in 1871 under Valentine Gedtden

Thanks to Sandra for the info on those other early American lawn tennis players. It's probably easier to find out something about a player with a name like Bowie Detrick than it is to find out something about someone with a relatively common name, such as Grant N. Smith or William H. Taylor.

You had these down as East Coast Players previously (reply 78) now West Coast players   ??? Although it was the West Coast where I was mainly searching.   Difficult to find some of those that have the more popular names like Taylor and Smith without dates, lots of possibilities for William Taylor  ::)

Spent many hours looking for these last few - strongly suspect that Truman G Grindley may be Truman John Gridley of the Thatcher School beaten by Trow Hendricks. Mixed corners won by Miss Donnel of Los Angeles and J R Britton of Pasadena who defeated Miss Ruby Garland and T J Truman of Ojai. (As per The San Francisco Call., October 20, 1903)

1900 Census of Ojai township, Ventura, California shows a Truman J Gridley with parents (or Father and step-mother)

Truman J Gridley  - Birth Date: 19 Jan 1883  California
Death Date: 28 May 1970  Riverside. California.

Other records -  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0rlx/

The father S C Gridley - Samuel Clark Gridley - under Grilley in 1910
Father Samuel married twice :- First to Margret E Hankins (mother of Truman) - Born 1847 in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio and died 1884 in Ojai, Ventura, California,.
Second wife Ellen Grounds - Birth 2 July 1856 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania

Truman John Gridley - Birth 19 Jan 1883 in California and died 28 May 1970 in Thermal, Riverside, California. Married to  Beatrice Maine - Birth 24 Dec 1885 in Green, Wisconsin and died  25 Mar 1969 in Riverside.

The first professional men's tournament in the US was held in 1889  It was named the SAP open, is the second oldest US tournament in total  and is still held today. Names from that tournament include the champion, William H Taylor, Valentine Gadesden and Charles Yeats, so these must have been among the first professional tennis players. Therefore it seems likely we are looking for a William H Taylor probably born 1850 - 1860 with a father William Taylor ( he was Jnr  ???)  - lots of possibilities for the same name.
There was one that might fit - 1860 - Siskiyou, California which may be worth more investigation  ???

William Taylor 29  Eliza Taylor 29
Martha M Taylor 9  Nancy I Taylor 7
William H Taylor 1  Daniel M Taylor 16

Hi, Sandra,

Thanks for the additional information in your last two entries. I meant west coast, mainly Californian, players where William H. Taylor, Grant M. Smith and the other players were concerned.

I know from my own experience how difficult it is to find information on players with common names like Taylor and Smith, especially ones who played more than a hundered years ago.

And you're right about Truman J. Gridley.

Thanks, again - Mark

I have some queries re a few early female American lawn tennis players. Maybe someone will be able to help with some basic biographical information.

Mrs Ream Leachman -> Possibly born in California, this player appears to be hidden by her husband's name. She played tennis in the early 1920s.
--

Virginia MacVeagh -> American-born but played tennis mainly in France and Switzerland in the years circa 1906-10.
--

Golda Myer -> Another player who might have been in California. Later became Mrs Gross. Was playing tennis circa 1914.
--

Vera Warden -> American-born, but played tennis mostly in France and Switzerland in the years circa 1904-10.
--

I'm just looking for basic information, such as date and place of birth and death, and date and place of marriage. Any help would be appreciated.

Sandra,

Many thanks for all of that information, which is much appreciated. If I'm not mistaken, Allen H. Behr was a brother of another tennis player, Karl Behr. Quite a lot is known about Karl, partly because he was a Titanic survivor. However, I haven't been able to find anything about Allen.

I'll add a few more names, of players whom I think were, in fact, siblings, or at least related in some way:

Herbert M. Tilden
William T. Tilden III

I know that Herbert was the brother of the great William T. Tilden II (1893-1953), and I think William III might have been a nephew of William II.
-----

Captain Robert C. van Vliet
S.C. van Vliet

I believe Robert was the brother of Sarita van Vliet, who also played tournament tennis. I'm not sure about S.C. van Vliet.
-----

Ludlow van Deventer
Philip van Deventer
-----

And one player who was twice runner-up in the singles event at the United States Championships:

Wallace F. Johnson

Here are the names of some more early male American lawn tennis players who were active in the early 1890s and were probably mostly from the west coast:

H.H. Haight
Louis Haight

The above two players appear to have been brothers.
--

George H. Hellman
--

Ogden Hoffman
--

N.J. Kilgarif
--

August Taylor
William H. Taylor

The elusive William H. Taylor, the best of the early player from the west coast, features in one draw with an August Taylor. This makes me think that these two players might have been brothers.
--

Charles R. Yates

Any help with basic biographical information would be appreciated.

I'm wondering whether it might be possible to find anything on the siblings Claude Marsh Butlin and Dorothy Marsh Butlin, both of whom played tennis circa 1905-25. It's not clear where and when they were born and I'm not sure where and when they died either. They played a lot of tennis in Mexico and seem to have settled there at some point.

I believe Dorothy married at some point, but don't know whom, where and when.

Any help would be appreciated.

Must have been their father Claude Butlin (17th April 1877 English born)  - the oldest player to have competed in the Davis Cup (50 years 105 days) D 6.05.40

http://www.copadavis.com/en/results/tie/details.aspx?tieId=10003289

Claude Butlin 2-4   1-2   1-2   Ties 3 Debut 1925

Tennis players who have represented the Mexico Davis Cup team in an official Davis Cup match. Mexico have taken part in the competition since 1924.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mexico_Davis_Cup_team_representatives

The birth date given above 17th April 1877 matches London, England, School Admissions and Discharges, 1840-1911 for a Claude Butlin in 1886/1887.
However, there is also a border crossing from mexico to the USA which says Claude Butlin was born Jaffna, Ceylon.  ???

Claude Butlin was active 1925 - 1931 if you read the New York Papers.

Wife: Mabel Wilson Butlin -

It is quite difficult to trace the female lines sometimes when they marry but with very scant information that we have here it is more than extremely difficult. Literally hours and hours of research.
Haven't come across the marriage of this couple so far but these pieces seem to fit.
Probably a little more detail than you actually need.

Mrs Frank Godfrey - found alot of references to matches played in New York and referring to Brookline. Massachusetts.  This leads to the following census:-

1920 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MX1G-RYQ

1930 - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQ59-PL2 (This says that Anna's mother was born in Wisconsin and her father New York. Anna had been married for 16 years - she was married at 21 years.)

Came across an article in the Sarasota Herald Tribune - December 28th 1947 that the second born daughter was about to make her "debut" at a Sarasota tea.  This confirmed that the middle initial "T" used in some of those census could well have been Anna's maiden name - "Townsend".

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0srh/

Anna was born about 1892 New York with a New York father and a Wisconsin Mother.  This would appear to fit them in 1900 - unfortunately her father has died. The following shows her on census with her mother. The death of her mother confirms her father. Interesting the name Jerone shows up again in Ida's death details.

Rufus King Townsend - Birth 18 March 1853 in Albany County, New York, and died 21 December 1895 in Albany, Albany County, New York.
(Steam engine manufacturer)

Ida was Ida Jerone Willey

Marriage of Rufus and Ida

"King" came into the name of Rufus through the maiden name of his mother - parents were -

I have a list of some more early American lawn tennis players, active between the years 1880 and 1914. Again, I'm just looking for some basic biographical information on them, mainly an exact date and place of birth and date and place of death:

Atterbury, Grosvenor A.
--

Beach, Francis R.

Beach, T.K.

The above two players could be brothers of Rodmond Vernon Beach
--

Billings, H. Mortimer
--

Dodge, Clarence P.
--

McMullen, Edward (?)
--

Nettleton, George H.
--

Paddock, Lewis H.
--

Paret, R.

The above might be the brother of Jahial Parmley Paret
--

Post, Jr., Carroll J.
-----

Any help would be appreciated.

Mark

Looking at the census it doesn't appear that Jahial Parmley Paret had a brother with the initial R  ???

The only entries coming up for R Paret seem to be a Robert Paret born October 1870 New Jersey - became a stock broker.

What year was R paret taking part in competitions ?

Hi Marc,

I am not sure I am responding correctly...new to RootsChat.  I saw your inquiry concerning Sarita Van Vliet Wood.  She was my Grandmother.  Although I am sure she played lawn tennis, I believe she was primarily clay court.  Her grand years were in the early 1920's.  I know she was placed first in California and one year she was placed 8th in the country.  Unfortunately I was in my early teens when she passed so I was not old enough to ask her the questions I would love to ask now.  I do know she told me she was a friend of your relative "Wild Bill" Tilden and I believe she said they had played doubles together at one time. As a note of interest, her father, Gen Robert Cambell Van Vliet who was also an excellent tennis player was commadant of Alcatraz when it was a military prison.  He had a tennis court built on Alcatraz for her so she could continue practicing !  Mary Ellen
