I am researching a family of fisherman, one of whom I know died in Eyemouth. Does anyone know where I can obtain a full list of the fishermen who died on that day be it book, newspaper report etc. Thank-you.

there's a book - Black Friday by Peter Aitchison published by Birlinn isbn 9781841589824. Think it may have been called Children of the Sea in a previous edition.

Many thanks, Elizabethh

I did some research on this about 5 years ago
Very sad when looking at the 1881 Census and finding all the families that were affected by the disaster that was to happen later that year :'(

what family are you looking for?
-
family name Fisher - I believe Thomas was on board the Guiding Star reg in Eyemouth. He would have left a family behind.

Hi Elizabethh
If you have facebook, search for Eyemouth Past page, 100's of old photos and info on Eyemouth

I have the edition of the book entitled "Children of the Sea", published by Tuckwell Press. On page 202, in the the list of those lost on the Guiding Star, is:-
"THOMAS FISHER, aged 30. Left a widow who gave birth to Thomasina Fisher on 16 December 1881. Their other dependent children were William, Alice, Janet, Elizabeth and Ann."
There was also a Robert Fisher lost on the Beautiful Star - he was aged 24. "No noted dependents." (page 200)

Thank you caraid also lizci - yes that is the family (Thomas): I did not have 'proof'', it was only mentioned by elderly relatives in the family years ago when talking about this particular family tree. I believe I can also trace Robert. Everyone has been so helpful.

Hi,
You beat me to it, having lunch.
But according to "Black Friday" it was Edward Fisher not Robert on the Beautiful Star.
-
You're absolutely right Beckey. My eyes must have seen Edward, but for some reason my brain said Robert. Apologies!

When you say you have found an Edward Fisher can you tell me if he was married or is only the name recorded?
-
There isn't any more information about Edward - just "EDWARD FISHER, aged 24. No noted dependants."
That would seem to suggest he wasn't married ... certainly many of the men listed are shown as having left a widow (sometimes named, sometimes not) and dependant children are named. A number of the widows appear to have given birth in the few months after the disaster.

hi elizabethh,
Just a note, some of the widows either remarried or took up with another man, they had their children to consider.

Is this article of any help?

Hi Karen, I couldn't tell you if I'm related to Agnes to be honest. My G-G-Grandfather William Maltman (his father drowned on the 'Guiding Star') moved from Eyemouth to Fraserburgh somtime at the end 1800's, there is possibly a connection with Agnes somewhere down the line.

I read about the disaster in the following:
An Old-time Fishing Town - Eyemouth its history romance and tragedy with an account of the East Coast Fishing Disaster, Rev. Daniel McIver; Greenock 1906.
It was reprinted in 1981.
Its been a while since I read it so I can't say for certain but I think the author might have witnessed the aftermath. He certainly described it in some detail.
