Title: Montana !
Post by: howesd on Tuesday 25 September 12 11:18 BST (UK)
I would appreciate some help with researching Montana census records.  I have an Alice Hackin Gray born 1860 Durham England married for the 2nd time to a William Archer Brownlow abt 1887.  Her 1st husband was William Macnay died in 1882.  At some point after this Alice and William together with the daughters of Alice, Florence Macnay b1882 in England and Hetty Macnay born 1884 travelled out to Montana.  They returned in 1893 where the girls are listed on the Passenger list with the surname Brownlow together with another sister, Sarah Brownlow.

I have searched on Ancestry but there does not seem to be a suitable census for Montana which covers this period.  Can anyone suggest any other means of trying to find them living in the USA.  William Brownlow had a brother George living in Montana working as a Quartz Miner in 1900 census in Gardiner, Cooke, Jardine, Park.  It is thought that Alice ran a hotel whilst living in Montana.

Any help with this one would be appreciated.

Hi,

Unfortunately the 1890 census was almost entirely destroyed by fire and only remnants remain which is why your having no luck finding the family.  City directories are sometimes useful, they tend to give information between census but I cannot see anything so far.

https://familysearch.org/ shows most of the records available in the US.

Have you found Sarah on any English census returns?  Do you know Sarah's year of birth, please?

I have found a possible candidate for Sarah Brownlow in 1901 census in New Brancepath, Durham, Lancashire where she states born in USA British Subject. She was born in 1886/7

William Brownlow    43
Florence Brownlow    40
Florence Brownlow    19
Sarah Brownlow    14
Thomas Brownlow    64

The 1892 Helena, Montana city directory has this:

Brownlow, Wm., laborer, resides 668 W. Main.

Thank you for the information.  It could be her.  I do not have access to passenger lists to the UK, but by a process of elimination, it appears that Sarah was born c1886.

Perhaps a coincidence?
Helena, Montana Directory, 1891
George R Brownlow, laborer, 585 W Main
Wm Brownlow, laborer, 668 W Main

Update: Shelly, you beat me to it.   ;)

Thank you so much Lisa for taking the trouble to look for me, it is very kind.  I was aware of a George R. Brownlow - William's brother - and today I found the graves of Thomas Patterson Brownlow and his 2nd wife Sarah.  What I really really want is evidence of Alice running a hotel, any signs !!  We can't be sure if Alice married William Brownlow in the States or if before they left England.

Hello Howesd!

I happen to live in Park County, Montana.  :D

May I suggest:
 Park County Genealogy Society
 10 MacDonald Creek Rd
 Livingston, MT 59047
(Sorry, I can't find an email address but I know they exist. It's a small group and I know they hold a meeting once a month except June - Aug in the local Senior Center.)

Yellowstone Gateway Museum of Park County
 118 W. Chinook St
 Livingston, MT 59047
(This small museum hold lots of info concerning the area.)

Either should be able to help with your research since Cooke City, Gardiner, & Jardine are within the county.
They may point you in the right direction especially concerning the restaurant, mines, etc.

How about: The Livingston - Park Co. Library - http://www.livingstonpubliclibrary.org/ ?

Also - the Montana Historical Society - http://www.montanahistoricalsociety.org/ in Helena may help.

And - the World Mining Museum in Butte, MT - http://miningmuseum.org/

Miners tended to move from place to place here back then. Montana and the surrounding states had - and still have - numerous mines.

Empire, MT no longer exists as far as I know - the MT Historical Society or Yellowstone Gateway  may know where it was. Lots of ghost town here - they died when the ore mines ran out.

My family is not from MT so I do not know much about research here but if you need some help concerning the places above, or have a question, let me know and I will see what I can do. ;D

Although its a while since this post was active I have been reading it with interest.  My great grandmother was Sarah Ann Gray, sister of Alice Hackin Gray.  I didn't know anything about Alice and her travels to America.  Maybe we could share information on the Gray family

One thing perplexes me a bit;

William Macnay died in 1882.  At some point after this Alice and William together with the daughters of Alice, Florence Macnay b1882 in England and Hetty Macnay born 1884

So William died 2 years before Hetty born ?

Have we got proof of a death for William MacNay?  I can't find anything definite in 1882

Hetty Brownlow is on the 1901 census in Hepworth Street, living with the Swift family
RG13; Piece: 4677; Folio: 126; Page: 39 (my great grandma , Sarah Ann Maddox (nee Gray), Alice's sister is also living in Hepworth Street)
it does say Hetty was born in the USA in 1885

Florence MacNay was born in the Lanchester Registration District in the Mar Qtr 1882, so the family left for America between 1882 and 1885 .

Do we know exactly when?
They returned in 1893
William Brownlow is on the US 1880 census in Illinois, but I can't find a marriage for Alice and William Brownlow

COULD be either one of two  registered in the March or June Qtr. in England, one registered in Manchester and the other in Basford, Nottinghamshire. Free BMD.

As I can't find a death for William MacNay or a marriage for Alice and William Brownlow, I am thinking that William died in Montana and Alice remarried there

This tree is private so you will have to contact the owner to see if they are willing to share the information with you

I checked the GRO death index but  the only William Macnay entry for 1882 was aged 56 so too old
