I am looking for possible sources of any likeness of Rev. William John Purdon, MA who was vicar of St Anne's Church in Aigburth, Liverpool from 1836 but who returned to his roots in Ireland a few years later as he had family commitments there.
Among later appointments he was rector of St Mary's, Carlow 1859-1864. The Carlow library has been contacted but could not find anything. His death was registered in Rathdown in the third quarter of 1880.
He was twice married and had two daughters.
Any suggestions will be most welcome.
Can anyone say when newspapers started printing photos?

Didn't see very many photos in older newspapers during the timeframe you've mentioned.
Found some details on William in a directory of Dublin Diocese CofI clergy that might be of interest.

Have you contacted any of the churches to see if they, or their members, can help?
Our family has a photograph of one of our church's ministers (lived roughly the same time period) and were only able to identify the subject when we saw a labelled copy of the same photo. Since then we know of several other copies- all given to families of long-standing in the church.

Thanks for both replies. I had some of those details but some blanks.
As to the churches, the first is probably too early. The second is the one wanting the picture, see below. Carlow have been asked and the others will be now.
For some 70 years a large framed engraving has hung in the vestry, labelled as if for Purdon. On taking the frame apart we found another parson's signature, so it has been wrongly identified all this time.
Thanks again.

I wonder if a family history tree might have anything attached to it. There is a Purdon tree in the Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in LinenHall library, Belfast. These are mainly of Co Down families its in Volume 20
I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Email:info[at]linenhall.com.
My memory is a Purdon recorded family histories or the history of an area, try their cataloque
Good hunting Jim

Thank you for a new line to follow. I have nothing so far linking William with Belfast but it is certainly worth contacting that library.I'll report when I hear from them.

Ainslee - have you found a photo or likeness of Rev.Purdon ? I am in Carlow and am putting together a photo collection of the previous rectors of St.Mary's church . I am missing this one and would be most grateful for a copy were it available .

I am sorry to say we have failed on this one. He was our first incumbent and since the 1920s we thought we had his portrait, framed, in the vestry. Some reframing and reading of old parish magazines revealed that his frame had been wrongly labelled with his successor's name, so we would be very glad to know if you come across him elsewhere.
