Hi Norrie!

Just got this; sorry for the delay.  I think that's the right Morris family.  I have since found out that Annan Morris died in 1919.  Lived in Kinghorn at Old Abden.  Married Janet Smart in 1908.  It looks as if the Morris family moved (as you mentioned).  I haven't made it any further back than Annan.  His wife was my great aunt.  They were only married for a few years when Annan died and they had no children.  Janet moved to South Africa but alone - none of her family went with her.  Parents remained in Kinghorn, sister spent some time in Canada but passed away in Kinghorn (at Old Abden).  Do you know anyone who has photos of cemeteries in Kinghorn?

Thanks for your help Norrie!

Hi again Norrie,

Wow, that's amazing!  Where do you find the time to do it all?

I know that Andrew was a relative of the Annan Morris I am interested in so it must be the right Morris.  Do you have photos of those headstones? If so, I would love a copy.   If anyone is interested, I have a photo of Annan Morris' wife's grave in Pretoria, South Africa.  Her name was Janet Bryce Smart and she left Kinghorn (and all her family) sometime after Annan died.  This Annan was the one in your message below who was 1 year old in the 1881 Census.  He died in Kinghorn in 1919 - 8 years after his marriage to Janet Bryce Smart.  From your previous message, it looks as though Andrew was Annan's uncle and John was Annan's father.  Thanks so much for all the new Morris information!!!

I have lots of relatives that should be in the Kinghorn cemetery as that's where most of my mother's family came from or ended up.  Smarts, Browns, Bryces, Christies, Taylors, McCurrachs, Watsons, Hillock, Morton, Morris and Morrison.  The heads of households were as follows:

James Brown (married to Janet Bryce)

William Smart (married to Elizabeth Watson)

James Christie (married to Christina Morrison)

William McCurrach (married to Ann Taylor)

Also, I am looking for a couple of stones in particular in the Kinghorn cemetery.  One is Ina Hillock.  Her father was Alexander (Sandy) Hillock, her mother (I think) was Robina Christie, she had a sister (another Robina) and perhaps a brother named Thomas.

Another is Elizabeth Watson McCurrach (nee Smart).  Her parents were  David Smart and Janet Brown.  Her husband, James Christie McCurrach is buried in Wendover, I believe, as is their daughter, Kathleen McCurrach as the family moved there because James was the farm bailiff for General Sir Bruce Hamilton at the Hale.

Thanks again so very much for all your help, Norrie.  I really do appreciate it!!

Chica :)

Thank you so much, Norrie!  This is great.

I have another question for you.... is the Kinghorn Cemetery called the "Old Kirk" or is that a different cemetery in Kinghorn?

Again, thanks so much!!!

Hi Norrie!!

That's all great stuff, thanks!!  I have discovered that the "Ina" I was looking for is actually Alexandrina (Ina must have been a nickname).  I was told today that she and Elizabeth Watson Smart are both buried in the Kirkcaldy cemetery.   It's all so confusing!!

Thanks again Norrie!!  So much appreciated!!

Hello Norrie :

A few years ago you were really helpful in my Gordon family search.   I have just come across your story about the murder of Isabella Gordon - likely my second cousin 3x removed.  You did a great job in researching and recording this story and I have copied and added it to my record of Isabella Gordon.

I have changed from a PC to an IMac and updated my software a couple of times since I last was in contact with you so unfortunately I can't find you on any of my trees.   My 3rd great grandfather was James Harry Gordon 1787 to 1878 Buckhaven.    My grandfather was Robert Kinnear Gordon.    So I'm wondering how or if we are related ?

Hi Norrie,

I was so happy to stumble upon this thread, hopefully you'll be able to help me.

I've hit a wall in tracing my family's Scottish roots. My fifth-great grandfather, Charles Ross, died in Pathhead 6 July 1862. His wife Christian (or Christina) Ross (Maiden Name: More), died sometime between then (6 July 1862) and 1869, assumedly somewhere within the Dysart region because that is where her children lived. However, I can't find any records about her after the death of her husband.

By any chance, have you stumbled upon the headstones of either Charles Ross (b. 1795 d. 1862), or Christian More Ross (b. 1800, d. 1862-1869) during your indexing?

Thanks for your help,
Chris

from  http://fifefhs.org/Records/pathheadfeuars.htm

The Pathhead Feuars' Burial Ground at the end of the Commercial Street was originally granted to the Dunnikier (as Pathhead was then known) Feuars on 31st July 1684 by John Watson and his wife, Euphan Orrock, as a burying-place for the inhabitants of the town and lands of Dunnikier. The ground was enclosed in January 1707, and extended on 10th July 1740, when Mr James Oswald gifted adjoining land. A further extension came in 1828, when the Feuars purchased from John Robertson's heirs the adjoining garden, about 1/5th of which was added to the old ground, and divided up into 126 lots, each lot containing 3 grave-breadths. Thus, there was formed the present Pathhead, or Dunnikier, Churchyard, which measures approximately half an acre [Note: the Churchyard is not to be confused with another, also known as Kirkcaldy Pathhead, but otherwise known as Ravenscraig, or Nether Street, Burial Ground].

It has been calculated by the Pathhead Feuars' Trust that between 1684 and 1960 (estimating 25 deaths per year for the unrecorded years of 1684-1707) that there were over 11,000 interments in the burial ground. This number would seem to be correct, as Brodie has calculated some 7100 interments between 1707 and 1860.
Perhaps they may have been removed in 1862, when the burial ground was levelled and the headstones placed in an orderly manner.
I have photographed this Cemetery as my son happens to live next to it,
there are a number of Ross's buried their.

Hi Norrie

Are there any Westwoods in your index. Looking for Peter Westood who married Mary Webster in 1850 and Williamson Westwood who married Ann Gordon or Ann Ross Gordon in 1885.

I know there is a James Westwood aged 13 buried in the Kirkcaldy Old Churchyard. Also looking for his parents James Westwood and Margaret Williamson.

Thanks in advance.

Norrie, I have a friend who owns an extremely old letter asking a friend to the funeral of his wife,
Elizabeth (Betty) McGillm d December 25/29 1773. Her husband was Andrew Cowan. I don't know where he is, but she is buried in the Kirkcaldy Churchyard. If there's anything you have on either of them, or even a photo of a grave, that would be wonderful.

Thank you so much.

Patty :)

Hi Patty this is all I can find

Elizabeth Cowan alias McGill abode Kirkcaldy
died 25.12.1773 , burial 29.12.1773
wife of Andrew Cowan ( Merchant) late Provost of Kirkcaldy

Family Search gives
Andrew Cowan & Elizabeth  McGill married  4.4 1773 Kirkcaldy
Therefore only married 8 months

there is no headstone in old Kirkyard Kirkcaldy

Andrew was provost of Kirkcaldy   1769 to 1772, 1788 to 1779

Hi Morris sorry I can find no headstones for the above Adamson Family
in Dysart or Kirkcaldy, remember that in 1881 he was a farm labourer
and he died 4 years later, maybe no money for a stone.
in 1881 census there are 2 grandchildren David Ramsay 8 and
Mary Hutchison 3  who were there parents?

nothing for David Adamson or any of the other Children

Thanks Norrie

As you said they were probably not able to put up a stone.

The two grandchildren in the 1881 census are the children of William and Mary Adamson's daughter Mary who had 4 children but was never married. The 1881 Census is the only occasion when two of the children are recorded with different surnames, but living with their maternal grandparents....later they used their mother's name Adamson

'synchronicity' ?  Curiously I have just written a letter to Canada to a descendant of another of the 4 children

Thanks for your efforts

Hello Norrie!

I've got another request for you, this time a little more recent. I'm looking for the headstone of one "Charles Ross Gourlay". He was born in Kirkcaldy in 1917 to Esther Birrell Ross (b.1882-d.1962) and John Gourlay (b.1883). Was married to a Ms. B. Maddison, and died in Kirkcaldy in 1990. Unfortunately I haven't been able to track down the exact cemetery :(

Thanks for the Help! Cheers!

Hello Norrie!
Thanks for checking. Sadly I don't know of any of Charles's siblings, I was hoping that a search of the surrounding headstones might have given me some clues. I'm actually researching the Ross line from the top down and have found that I'm somehow related to just about all the Ross's in the Dysart/Kirkcaldy area. That's what led me to that Ross/Gourlay family.
Thanks Again,
Chris

Hi Norrie

Is there anyone buried in Kirkcaldy with the names Andrew and Harriet (nee Chalmers) Blackwood. Harriet died on 1 December 1853 aged only 52. They are my 4x great-grandparents and the parents of my 3x great-grandfather James Ferguson Blackwood, who emigrated to New Zealand in 1858.

Their infant son Andrew is also buried there, he died on 20 July 1831, but no idea if their other children William Chalmers, Alexander, Andrew II or Henry are buried there.

Hi Norrie,

So, I have read through both Part 1 & 2...all 47 pages. I have yet to see anyone inquire on the name Marshall. I have family looking through old paperwork looking for more info, but what I do have is.....

John Marshall: lived in Kirkcaldy as of 1930. I have his sons paperwork when he came o the U.S and John was lists as his father and his address was listed. I am assuming he was alive as of 1930.

I am working on getting dates and names of him and other family members. Any info on any Marshall in the Kirkcaldy area would be fantastic.

Finally... The work you have done and are doing is amazing!! The world needs more people like you that care about peoples pasts.

Hi just going through Marshall headstone inscriptions in Kirkcaldy won't help you very much
you need to establish who his parents were?
you can obtain his birth certificate and his parents marraige certificate
by going to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ a pay to view site
I have many Marshal inscriptions in the Kirkcaldy area
eg this one from Dysart Cemetery

who died as the reslt of an accident 23.4.1931 age16
above John MARSHALL died 30.1.1964 age 75

What a wonderful resource you've built here Norrie, and I hope you may be able to help locate graves for some visitors from Canada who will be with me here in Fife on the 12th of August for the day.
Maureen and Linda Dodd are travelling over from Toronto and hope to find some relatives graves, and I've traced a few, but I'm stuck on the following;

Three Skinner family members died during the typhus outbreak in 1871, all are given as died in Sinclairtown Parish, and all were born in 'Muchty.
John Skinner was 71 years old, died January 7th
John Skinner junior was 49 years old, died January 10th
Janet Skinner was 49 years old, died January 17th

Joseph Logan Skinner was 39 years old, died 1836 January 23rd in Strathmiglo and I think I might need to go there and simply look around as I can't see any records for there.

if you can help I'll be very grateful, and maybe if we can find the gravestones you could come along and meet our Canadian visitors?

Many thanks for a comprehensive reply Norrie!
What a shame they've not turned up, but given the typhus outbreak is it possible that they may have been buried at Nether Street, which would have been next door to the old Infirmary at the foot of St Clair Street?
The cemetery folk have no records for there, once called Ravenscraig Cemetery I think, and wherein lies another connection of the Skinner's.

Sheila in Canada may be along to post to help out with this search; it's her mum Maureen and sister Lin who will be here on Monday.

A stab in the dark here Norrie, but there are some 'connections' buried in East Wemyss Cemetery. Do you have any records for there?

Hi Sheila and Norrie,
Latest info from the Kirkcaldy Cemeteries office at the Crematorium is that none of them are in Dysart or East Wemyss Cemeteries. I called in and asked to have that checked this afternoon.
I'm assuming that the Dysart one checked is that between Loughborough Road and Windmill Road, and wonder what options there were at the time?
There's said to be no records for Ravenscraig, now renamed Nether Street Cemetery, which might have been used given it's location next to the old Infirmary. Did they have an infectious diseases ward there I wonder?
I need to see if I can hunt down the Nether Street Church records.........

Certainly West Brae Hospital in East Wemyss had 'infectious' wards.

Many thanks Norrie, I suspected that we'd find difficulties with the Skinner 'typhus' graves. Maybe Cupar Records Office will have records for their return to 'Muchty or Strath' cemetery, which I'll check in the morning, or it could be that there was a typhus dedicated graveyard in Kirkcaldy?

I'm working to find Goodsir's Row, (1861 Census) and I think it'll have been near the Hawkleymuir Linen Mill up Lawson Street/Park Road. That was a paper suppliers (McGrouthers?) when last used I think.
There looks to have been rows in this shot http://www.britainfromabove.org.uk/image/spw042549 which is all built over now.

You've done a power of work Norrie, I'm due you a beer!

Relation in the Library would be Wendy, Christine's second cousin. We get around a bit!

Hi Norrie!! Thank you so much for all the research you did!! That's amazing :) Regarding John Skinner & Janet Logan's " son John 1846 married Eliza Weir and the 1881 Census shows
him also a manager in a linen factory in Dysart
Inscription from Falkland Cemetery" John Skinner Sr. 1798 was born in Falkland! Maybe the John Sr., John Jr. and Janet Logan are buried in Falkland too?  John Jr. and his 2 sons John and Joseph were all factory managers!! That is amazing!! John Skinner 1846 attended all 3 typhus deaths! Thanks again so much!! Sheila

There's no reply from Cupar where they offered to check the Strathmiglo and Auchtermuchty graveyards and I reckon they'll be busy doing this sort of thing right now with lots of visitors to Fife, so as its Saturday and they'll be finished for the week I think we'll need to go it alone to find anything by Monday morning!
I can check Falkland Cemetery on foot over the weekend if I get time; its only 15 minutes or so away.

Subject: SKINNER, Dysart, 1871 Deaths

Dear Dan and Vicki

Here's the sad story :

1871 DEATHS in the District of Dysart in the County of Fife:

p.2, No. 6 : On 7 January 1871 at St Clairtown, Dysart, John SKINNER, Linen Weaver, widower of Margaret PAUL, aged 71 yrs, s/of James Skinner, linen weaver, and Ann Skinner m.s. Cree (both deceased), of typhus fever 2 wks, not cert. Infmt: John Skinner, grandson, present

p.3, No. 7 : On 10 January 1871 at St Clairtown, Dysart, John SKINNER, Tenter in Linen Factory, married to Janet LOGAN, aged 49 yrs, s/of John Skinner, linen weaver, and Margaret Skinner m.s. Paul (both dec), of typhus fever 8 wks, not cert. Infmt: John Skinner, son, present

p.4, No. 11 : On 17 January 1871 at St Clairtown, Dysart, Janet SKINNER, widow of John Skinner, Tenter in Linen Factory, aged 46 yrs, dr/of Joseph LOGAN, linen weaver, and Eliza Logan, m.s. WISHART (both dec), of typhus fever, 21 days, cert. Infmt: John Skinner, son, present

These certs confirm that John Skinner Snr was the son of James Skinner & Anne Cree, and that John Jnr was the brother of Vicki's William and Dan's Ann.

I don't think that John & Janet would be buried in Falkland it was much later that John came to Falkland. I think it would have been Ravenscraig Cemetery where Joseph 1850 daughter Euphemia
was buried in 1901 there could still have been room in the grave of her grandparents

Well done Norrie!
You're far better at this than I am, having spent a few hours in Kirkcaldy trying to source Skinner info from the reference section (what a missed opportunity with the revamp eh? Just a 'money maker' cafe added and the REAL stuff hidden away; BOOKS).
Sheila has a slow 'net connection up there in Tweed so she may not have seen this yet. I think the system is steam powered!

John was a carter in Kirkcaldy along with his father and brother who were both called Andrew. He moved with his wife Mary (nee Anderson) and family to Aberdour to begin farming. I am still researching John's father Andrew Imrie and trying to find out the dates of his birth marriage and death. I was hoping that his grave was in Kirkcaldy cemetery, so I could find out his date of death, kind regards Dundee lass

there are a number of Ross's buried there.

Also would love further details on Christian Williamson, wife of Robert Cock who died in 1836. Her birth year might confirm if she is indeed the daughter of James Williamson senior and Margaret PHILPS (it is the mother we haven't confirmed but probability is increasing). Still trying to find the death/burial of this lady somewhere in Fife 1793-1821. Would love a list of all Marg. Philp/Williamson burials in Fife. One has to match! How we love unusual names in genealogy and don't like common ones!
My Reply
Are there no more details either on the James Williamson senior and then junior and his wife Eliz. Whyte/White?
Posted by Mixedupmob in June, you should get in touch with this person
I am looking for anyone researching the following Williamson family:
James b. 1811
Alexander b. 1814
John b. 1818
Thomas b. 1820
All were born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, the children of James Williamson and Elizabeth Whyte. They all arrived in Tasmania on board the Dunmore which left Leith on 19 July 1830 and arrived in Hobart Town on 28 February 1831. Their sister Janet was also on board with them but I think I have discovered what happened to her - waiting on a death transcript to confirm my theory.
I would really like to know what happened to the boys and so far have not had any luck in my search.

Dear Norrie,
I'm still searching for these stones/burials:

Still trying to find out where in Fife James Williamson (senior) who died in 1832 died and was buried. His second wife was Euphemia Stuart but his first was Margaret PHILP. MP died between 1793 and 1821. I was told she was buried at Dysart in ?1801.

You previously gave me JW's junior's details

Also looking for Thomas Whyte of Largo - he was listed by that name on his dtr, Elizabeth Whyte's marriage certificate when she married James Williamson, junior on 11 Nov 1806 in Kirkaldy. So he likely died after that date. I do not know the name of his wife or any other children. Possibly married to a Janet Allason/Allison.

Thanks for any help. You are a tremendous asset to many of us. Is there an equivalent of you for Auchterrderran areas? (James Williamson and Margaret Seath)

Hi Norrie - I'm looking for

Margaret (Bowman) (Simpson) Beveridge: Born 17 August 1797 - Died 20 August 1878.
She was married to William Simpson who died before 1827.
Then married to William Beveridge 23 November 1827.  William Beveridge died in 1851.

I'm actually tracing the Simpson line so if you find a William Simpson thank you.  I posted on the East/West Wemyss site looking for William's son James Simpson (11 Aug 1814 - 13 Feb 1870) who married Marjory Fairfull (abt 1814 - 19 Dec 1891.) but I don't think anything was found.

Thanks in advance!

Laura

Hello Norrie,
I am looking for the McVie's and the Oswalds.  In particular, currently chasing Murray McVie born about 1841(married to David Oswald) and still alive at 1901 Census, but not visible after that.
There are many McVie's that I am interested in, mostly descendants of Barney/Barnie/Bernard McVie and I suspect many are buried in Kirkcaldy.  I am in Sydney Australia and my g grandmother Murray McDonald McVie migrated here with her sister Jemima in late 1870's.  I would appreciate anything you can help me with. My email is (*) Deborah.

Hi Norrie,
With the first inscription you have here of Alexander, son of Barnie and Cathrane 1489 - we have him being born in 1843 which would make him much older than 70 in 1941?  Do you think the interpretation of the inscription is incorrect?  (Don't want you to be making special trips- just in case you have the photo or source)

What a wonderful gift this is.  I am so grateful to you for finding these and for taking the time to help.  It is much appreciated and I am amazed - it took me many hours to tease out the various branches of the family and your research has helped enormously.  I trust that I can help others as you have helped me.  Regards Deborah

Hi Norrie

Just wondering if you have anything please on a Charles Gray McNab who is listed in the Death Indexes as dying in 1965 in Kirkcaldy?  He was born in 1879 and his wife, in 1911 anyway, was Nelly McVey? Fitzpatrick (the 1908 marriage entry isn't very clear).

Many thanks

Nicola

Hi Norrie

Thanks for looking.  Yes he was born Dundee, although his maternal great great grandfather was born in Fife (Craigie) but the family had been in Dundee since about 1796.  He definitely was living in Kirkcaldy in the 1960s and probably earlier because I've now found the death certificate of his unmarried sister Ann(ie) George McNab who died in Newport on Tay in 1963 but of whom he was the informant which gives an address in Kirkcaldy.  His father and brother both died in Cupar (his mother died in Dundee), the former I have the death certificate for (again Charles Gray McNab was the informant with an address in Kirkcaldy in 1929), the latter is in 1983 so too late for online records.

Thanks again.

Nicola

Hello Norrie,

It's Tom Adamson, his wife Elizabeth (Betty) and their daughter Linda that I am looking for.  Betty died 2013 with her funeral being at the Crem.  Linda died around 1998.  The Tom that you list aged 63 in 1971 could be the man but it gives a date of birth five years earlier than the date I have of 1913.  Perhaps it's the wrong man but thanks ever so much for looking.

Kind regards,, Jack

Hello Norrie,

Can I bother you again, please?  I'm looking for any Blyth stones that may be in the Sinclairtown Feuar's Burial Ground.  I've come across a photograph which shows a couple of them in a damaged condition there, those of John Blyth and his father.  If you have managed to photograph/transcribe them I would be most grateful for the details.  Hope you are keeping well.

Hello Norrie,

The family I am trying to trace backward starts with John Waldegrave Blyth (1873-1962) who was married to Alice May Lowe (no dates).  His father was John Blyth (b.1843) who was married to Sarah Welby Waldegrave (b.1852). I thought that his father was Andrew Blyth (b.1817) who was married to Janet Gray (b.1821).  However, the late Duncan Glen suggested that it was John Blyth "manufacturer of St Clairton" who died 1853, aged 42 years.  This is the point I am trying to resolve. One generation further back I had Andrew's father as John Blyth (b.1793) who was married to Janet Millar (no dates).

Duncan Glen described the memorial as a sturdy square block topped by an urn with his father's headstone lying fallen over on the grass. I am sorry but I don't have the dates of death for most of these.

Sorry to be so vague but any Blyth information you can give me will, I'm sure, be very helpful.  I've got a copy of the pre-1855 deaths CD but that does not cover the period in question.

Kind regards, Jack

Thank you.

Hi Norrie.
I am searching for one of my ancestors. Apparently he died in Kirkcaldy so I am assuming he is also buried there. Maybe you can check your index to see if you have any info about him, please?

Surname: Zembron

Could you tell me which cemeteries you checked and to how many percent they are indexed by you, please? I believe you have indexed ABBOTSHALL, BENNOCHY,DYSART & PATHHEAD. Or is there anything else? Are they indexed to 100% or is there still a small chance that I could find my surname at one of the places?

Hi Norrie,

I am doing some family history search for my Granny.  In particular about her sister, who died in infancy.  It was not spoken of when my Granny was little, so she has always wanted to know a bit about the older sister she never knew.

I have found her death certificate - as the family lived at 16 Aitkin Street, Kirkcaldy at the time.  I am hoping she would of been buried in Kirkcaldy too.

Her name was Margaret Nicol Boyter 1/1/1926? - 6/11/1927.

Is she in your registry at all?

Kind Thanks,
Louisa

Hi Norrie,

Margaret's parents names were - Henry Reid Boyter 10/10/1896 (Cellardyke) - 12/05/1961 (Kirkcaldy), Agnes Calder Nicol  10/6/1904 (Uphall) (we think this is correct for her) - unknown?
Henry worked for the ministry of Labour so the family moved around a bit, but always in the fife region from what I have been told.

Thanks,
Louisa

Hi Louisa sorry no luck
I can't find any headstones in any of the 4 Kirkcaldy Cemeteries ( Abbotshall, Bennochy
Dysart or Hayfield ) for the Surname BOYTER
they lived in Aitken St Kirkcaldy so the nearest cemetery would have been Dysart.
remember Margarets parents were both young an it is highly unlikely they would
have bought lairs in a cemetery  for a young child often they were laid to rest
in ground of a relitive say Henrys father, by 1961 when Henry died the crem.
had opened in Kirkcaldy do you know where he was living when he died ?

Hi Norrie,

Hoping desperately you may be able to help. I have looked at various online indexes of burials, including paying to download details of four burials in Bennochy Cemetery which turned out not to be the names I was looking for!

My dad's family have lived in and around Kirkcaldy for generations, and I am trying to find graves for his grandparents (my great-grandparents) Andrew Nairn Younger, born abt 1863, died 1947 aged 83 - living at Massereene Road at time of death; his wife Beatrice (Howie), born abt 1862, died 1936 aged 72 - living at Overton Road at time of death.

Also looking for Andrew's parents - i.e. my dad's great-grandparents. Thomas Younger, born abt 1830, died 1904, aged 73 - living at Invertiel Road at time of death, and his wife Jane (or Jean) Nairn, born 1830, died 1914 aged 84 - was still living at Invertiel Road at time of death.

I am currently visiting Scotland, with my parents, but have to leave on Thursday morning - it would mean so much to my dad and me if we could visit any graves before we go.

Can you see if you have any of these in your collection.

Many thanks,

Ian Younger

Hi Ian sorry I have 1200 headstone photos in Bennochy Cemetery but
none for Younger.

When you check the Surname Index listings on Scottish Moumental inscriptions for
Bennochy they have Younger, Nairn & Howie listed and its an up to date Cd
which you can purchase, sorry I can't be of more help

Hi Norrie,

Thankyou so much for looking.

I think the Bennochy cemetery Youngers listed on the index for the CD you mention will probably be the ones I have already downloaded, which were all later generations and I can't link them in to my family at this point in time.

Can I just clarify whether you checked the other cemeteries, or did you only look at Bennochy?

On "Find A Grave" there are transcriptions for Dysart and Abbotshall, but not the names I am looking for - but I don't know if they have transcribed ALL the interments for those cemeteries or just some of them.

It's so frustrating. I will be in Kirkcaldy tomorrow, but don't have time to search every cemetery - I was just hoping to find out which one my Younger ancestors might be buried in.

Thanks again,

Ian

Would there be a headstone for John Graham and Mary Peck in Kirkcaldy?
I have a birth certificate for a Mary Ann Graham born 24 Jan 1791 in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland to John Graham, writer and Mary Peck, his spouse. Then a house for sale on the High Street of Pittenweem was once occupied by the late John Graham, writer. (The Fife herald Sept 9, 1824). Mary Ann Graham left for Ireland, then Canada. I am trying to find information about John Graham, her father.

I'm trying to trace the grave of a lady called Isabel Hastie, nee Muir. There's a burial transcription that lists her as ISBELL MUER and I believe she is buried at Kirkcaldy Old Kirk in February 1764. I'm just wondering if there are any other HASTIE /HASTY relatives buried with her or any other information that SP might be missing. If you could have a wee look for me please I'd be grateful...just to put my mind at ease!

Hello!

I'm branching out on my genealogy research and came across this post on RootsWeb posted in 2005: http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/SCT-FIFE/2005-03/1109805462

The MI list references my great grandparents, 1728 James Nicol Elizabeth Black, and I am hoping someone would be able to tell me more information or even what Dysart 5 might be in reference to (ie. what cemetary, etc.).

Any information would be greatly appreciated! This family line has been hard to track with very little personal information passed on.

Thanks!

I do not know when James died or if he remarried. Him and Elizabeth had a son, William, who moved north to Inverness at some point and is buried there with his wife. I've been told that William was an only child; however I do not know if that is 100% the case.

James' parents were William Nicol (b. 1844) and Jane Brunton (b. 1846). From what I have found he was the oldest child, followed by Eliza Honeyman (b. 1873), Jane B (b. 1876) and Margaret (Maggie) (b. 1880). I also found that Eliza was married in the 1901 census with a daughter, Jane B Traill, however cannot find record yet of her husband and his name.

Elizabeth's parents were Alexander Black (b. 1839) and Christina Robertson (b. 1847). They had many children, 1876 to 1890. Alexander's parents are James Black (b. 1819?) and Alison Greig (b. ?). Christina's parents are Andrew Robertson and Elisabeth Gilmour. Unfortunately there's a few more unknowns on this side of the family compared to the Nicol side.

From what I have been able to find there is a long time presence of my family in Fife. Any information you may be able to find would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much Norrie!  :D

The MI list references my great grandparents, 1728 James Nicol Elizabeth Black, and I am hoping someone would be able to tell me more information or even what Dysart 5 might be in reference to (ie. what cemetary, etc.).

Hi The list is of Headstones in Dysart Cemetery Fife, the inscription reads

1728         To the memory of Elizabeth Black wife of James Nicol
      who died 26.6.1922 aged 61

If you can tell me somemore about the Family I will see If I  can Find some more inf.

Who were their Parents ? Did they have children and who die they Marry?
I can check my index of over 18000 Headstones in Fife.

Hello Norrie
I wonder if you have a record of either Christina (nee Crawford) Green, born approx. 1885, or John (McKillop) Green, born 1877?
They are recorded as living in and around Chapel, Auchterderran, and Lochgelly (as well as other nearby places)
I'm afraid I don't know when they might have died - I only know that John returned from WW1
Thanks so very much!

Norrie and ev - thank you both so much - how very interesting

I am very excited by your discoveries, ev - the dates and area would certainly fit

Other than the information on the censuses mentioned, the only other information I have is the SWB (no. 26911) - unearthed today from a box in the attic!

Norrie, Christina was born in Lochgelly (though not John) and her parents were Thomas and Elizabeth

Thank you both so much for taking the time to search and provide that information - it really has helped me a great deal as I have struggled to find out much about them  :)

Hi Norrie I saw on an earlier post that you had name Andrew Wilson  (1736) on a list of graves at Pathhead.  My uncle traced our family tree and discovered that one of our ancestors was hung for murder. His name was Andrew Wilson he was hung in 1736 and his hanging caused the riots at the grass market. I was wondering if you had a photo of the headstone for Andrew Wilson and if you could recommend where I could find out more information about him, so far everything I come across refers to the trial, hanging and following riot. Thanks

Hi Norrie
Thank you for your prompt reply.
In answer to your questions, Elizabeth McCrindle Coulter married William Brown (of Balsusney Rd Kirkcaldy) in Calton, Glasgow, 1st April 1907. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Coulter (a shoemaker of Dounepark, Girvan).
According to the 1911 census William and Elizabeth Brown were living in Balsusney Road, Kirkcaldy)
I have Elizabeth McCrindle Brown's death certificate, which states that she died 22 Feb 1950 at Kirkcaldy, aged 71 years.
Elizabeth is described as "widow" of William Brown, and her parents are given as John Coltart (sic), shoemaker (dec.) and Jane Coltart (sic) (M.S. McCrindle) (dec.)
The informant was William Brown, son, of 50 Scoonie Drive, Leven.

That is all the information that I currently have. I'm hoping that you might have a photograph of her grave - as I would love to see it.

Regards
Robert

Elizabeth McCrindle Coulter married to William Brown

Hi Robert there is this headstone in Hayfield Cemetery Kirkcaldy
but its for a William Brown & Elizabeth Coultart,  I think its the case of
the son not knowing his mothers maiden name or the stone  Mason
just put in an extra  U in, as the death certificate stated her as
Elizabeth McCrindle Brown and her parents names are spelt correctly

Hayfield Cemetery Kirkcaldy Inscription
2260.   BROWN – William 1884 – 1948. Elizabeth Coltart 1879 – 1950

hope this helps Norrie

Hi Norrie
Thank you so much for the photograph.

I've spent thirty years looking for the burial of Elizabeth McCrindle Coulter, and you have solved a huge mystery for me!

This is definitely the correct grave. Her father, John Coltart (sic) spelt his name as it appears on the gravestone, however his daughter Elizabeth spelt her name variously, using Coltart (1881) and (1891), Coulter (1901) and (1907). However, on her death certificate, she was referred to as Elizabeth Coltart once more.

I know that William Brown was born in 1884 (1911 census), and that he was dead before Elizabeth in 1950 (as she was described as "widow" on her death certificate).

I know that their son, William Brown, died in 1972 in Leven (Fife), and that his wife, Catherine Briggs died in Kirkcaldy in 1989.

Do you happen to have a photograph of Catherine's Briggs Brown's grave at all. I do not know the month that she died, only the year - 1989.

I can't thank you enough for the help that you have given me so far - you're a star!

Regards
Robert

Hi Norrie,

Thanks for getting back to me so quick.

The only info I have on the children is John Henderson being that he is my great great grandfather.

There would be no gravestone for him as he was lost at sea in the Bay of Biscay in the Atlantic Ocean around the 8th December 1886. He was born 17 November 1841 in Fife.
He married Janet Elizabeth Spence in 1865.

Funny story that both John Henderson and John Snr were Naval Captains and both ended up drowning, 1 at sea and the other in a river in Australia.

I have no info on John Snr's parents apart from their names. John Henderson and Catharine Findlay.

Also seems that a Henderson married into another Henderson family.

Janet Elizabeth Spence was born 16 April 1840 in Abbotshall Kirkcaldy and died 27 Nov 1881 Kirkcaldy Fife.

Her parents were:
Thos (or Thomas) Spence b. 1797 Dysart Fife and died 24 Oct 1868 Kinghorn Kirkcaldy Fife.
Agnes Collins b. 1806 Kinghorn Kirkcaldy and died 6 Jul 1862 Abbotshall Kirkcaldy Fife.

Sorry for the long info :) That is all on my mothers side, my fathers side is also from Scotland but up in Wick.

Hi

That's great you see them, the wives were called Marion and Daisy, and there also was a child called Esther stanley, which was his daughter.

If you have these pictures that would be great also.  If you manage to see an Alexander that would be great.

Do you know if they do cremations there or if there is a memorial book we could visit and see.

Thanks for this, so much.

Hi this is photos of headstones
That's great you see them, the wives were called Marion and Daisy, and there also was a child called Esther stanley, which was his daughter.
Norrie

Thank you for this. It puts a bit of a spanner in the works as we seem to have paperwork that shows dates almost a year out for both.

Is it unusual for this to happen as we have Esther passing away at 2 months but in 1955 along with Marion also passing in 1955. It's not actual death certificates though it's like registers of deaths.

Confused now.

I am looking for the graves of relatives with the name of Bruce whose graves are in Kirkcaldy although I do not know which graveyard.
Robert Bruce: 11/2/1871 & wife Isabella (nee Arthur) May, 1844.
Also daughter, Jean who died as a baby 1829, and a second daughter Isabella, date unknown.
Parents of Robert Bruce could be there too who died c.1824 and wife Margaret Bruce (nee Duff)
Regards and thanks for any help provided or suggestions made

Thanks for looking for my Bruce connection, Norrie. A relative did find this record of her death if that changes things.
"a burial record at the local church in Kirkcaldy - Bruse Esaball, wife of Robert Bruse, tailor 5th july 1844 49 years." (meaning Isabella Bruce, my words)

Would there be other grave yards in the area you do not have access to?

Hi Norrie - Amazing job you are doing. Hope you get the appreciation you deserve.

I've got a Fife branch of my family I'm studying and thought I'd ask. I'm looking at John LUMSDEN and Christian LUMSDEN (HENDERSON) and their daughter Margaret THOMSON (LUMSDEN) Margaret was born in Abbotshall on 18/4/1813 and died in West Bridge, Kinghorn on 28/8/1855. She was married to William THOMSON, who was a toll keeper. Anyhing in your records for any of them?

I also saw mention of Wemyss and Scoonie in earlier posts. Any chance you might have something on James BARNETT (b. in Kettle) and Jean(ie) BARNETT (CRAIG) who both died at Scoonie Toll House in 1878 and 1885 respectively? Their parents were James BARNET(T) and Mary MACDONALD, and William CRAIG and Elizabeth BUCHANAN. Thanks for your time.
Kind regards,
David Milroy

Hi Norrie, Amazing you have been doing this for so long. Many thanks from Down Under !!
I am searching for  Alexander Hutton, his wife Isabella (Alexander) Hutton.
Several offspring I wont look for now.
They were married in 1829 in Kinghorn but children born in Kirkcaldy.
If you can find any Huttons or Alexanders in your records it may help my search.
Very grateful to you for looking!
Eileen

I found a record for Captain Alexander Hutton who was apparently harbour master at Kirkcaldy at some stage, and one address was Marine cottage.
Might have been buried elsewhere.
More digging.
Thanks,
Eileen

Hi I am new to this forum and am looking for any assistance in finding the grave of my Great great great grandmother Helen(Lindsay) Sutherland. Her death certificate says she died 28th July 1879 and she was buried in Pathhead Dysart.  I have searched around the graveyards here but cannot find any sign of her. willl check to see if they are buried there

Hi Norrie,

I'm looking for any Gilmour (Gilmer etc) headstones in Kirkcaldy, more likely Dysart please. Have you noticed anything on your travels? Nothing specific, though the older the better (1800s). I was going to head down but it would save me a journey.

My research is fairly complete, hence not looking for anything specific. It may help tie some loose ends or reveal unknown people that I am unaware of. Doesn't need to be a Gilmour headstone. The wife could be one someone else headstone.

The proximity could be important with related people in the next bed or side of larger stones - though I could do this myself if there's anything.

I've had a look on FindAGrave site and nothing really comes up for Gilmour of Kirkcaldy area even though there were many circa 1700-1900, more so Dysart area. (Helen Gilmour / David Nelson on that site of Abbotshall is no connection. Believe she was Dunfermline or outside Fife).

I am aware of Gilmour's in particular Burntisland and Markinch but these are a different tribe. Everything seems very concentrated to each area. There is nothing as of yet to connect them. If would go back before the 1700s if it did.

Hello Norrie,

It's been a wee while since I last contacted you and I'm hoping you can help me again with a couple of queries.

The first one I'm looking for is the gravestone of Katharine Thomson, wife of Alexander Dewar, buried in Abbotshall Cemetery 1792.

The second is any gravestones for the Tilloch family in Torryburn Cemetery.

Kind regards,
Jack

This discussion string is looking like an epic.

Would you have anything on Alexander Johnstone Thomson (my great grandfather) born in 1867.  The rest of his family emigrated to New Zealand but I understand he stayed in Kirkcaldy and we lost track of him.
