I am trying to trace the parents of my great, great grandfather John Howarth born Rochdale, Lancashire about 1828.
-
Hi
On www.familysearch.org
there is this entry
John Howarth Christening 26th November 1828 Rochdale
parents Thomas Howarth and Mary
Heather
-
Thanks Heather,
I believe his father was a John Howarth and he had a sister Ann born 1823, but I may be wrong. John lived at 35 Manchester Road, Castleton, Lancashire in 1861 with family - wife Jane (nee Hardman) and sons Robert born 1855 and James born 1857, a Ann Howarth born 1823 also lived at the same address. Thanks for your help Suz
This is very possibly my John listed in 1851 at 13 Brown Street, Castleton, with Mother Mary and sister Ann, and also the entry 1841 Northmoor Street Castleton. No father listed unfortunately. My Howarth family were very much into wool working.
Cheers aber

Wow! :) Thank you for your amazing information, while I was asleep on the other side of the world you were very busy.
I believe that the St Chads baptisms of Ann, Robert, John and Emma are the family I am looking for, more recent generations also married and baptized children at the same church.
The marriage to Mary Standring also looks right too, and christening at Wardleworth of John to John and Fanny.
Thank you for your help. Where is Buersill?
-
It's a few miles south of Rochdale Town centre.
Try putting it in google maps.

John was living at Brown Street when he married so that 1851 entry looks right for the family! :D

Is it possible to find the 1841 William Howarth machine joiner and family of Calderbrook in any later census ?
I'm looking for a William Howarth joiner who had a son John Howarth married to Ann Sladen at St Chad's in 1839 ( both minors) . This John Howarth become a machine maker/joiner.
Ann Howarth then a widow of married a John Whitworth.!
Thanks Sue
-
This seems to be the family who were in Calderbrook in 1841
1851
12 Field Head Rochdale
William Howarth head M 48 joiner
Mary wife 45
James son 23 Carpet Weaver
John son 22 Cotton spinner

Charles son 15 Cotton Spinner
Abrajham son 13 cotton spinner
Thomas son 11
Mary ann daughter 8
all b Littleborough Lancs

so this won't be the family with a son John who was married to Betty on 1851 census

Hi Sue, It would be an amazing coincidence if the John Whitworth were the same man, father of Jane Hardman, who married my John Howarth. John Whitworth is recorded on the marriage certificate as a butcher. regards Aber

No other details are recorded in early church records sorry,

Thanks for your reply and previous help, it was much appreciated.

Thanks for the 1851 information. They must be the wrong Howarths. My John Howarth was born c. 1820 .The info about William the joiner is from John's wedding certificate when he was living at Rydings which is between Syke and Wardle. In 1841 there are no Howarth's living at Rydings. I suspect William Howarth may be dead and don't know his wifes name-possibly Sarah as this is the name of John's first child.
Aber
All I know of John Whitworth is that in 1868 he is 52 a bachelor a labourer living at Mount Pleasant -poor housing built I believe to house the workers in Brights mills . Died before 1871 census ,when his widow Ann is living in Newhey with her youngest son Samuel and her granddaughter Mary Ann Howarth(my great grandma)

Thanks for the help finding out information about my John Howarth born 1828.
I believe his mother was Mary (nee Standring daughter of John and Ann ) and father John, weaver of Buersil and his siblings were Ann 1823, Robert 1824 and Emma 1835 all christened at St Chad's.
Is there any chance of taking it one step further back? Was there a 1831 census? Can the family be found with John and Mary and the children small Ann 7, and Robert 6 and John 3?
Can we find John Howarth father of John born about 1800.
Many thanks
Kind regards

Thanks for your work Radcliff and I get your point even more when I see the selection you offer as it is very hard to decide which is the most likely. The one that appeals most is the last, son of Robert and Mary, Smallbridge, as Robert is a very strong family name and Smallbridge was a place where subsequent family members lived, but it is only a hunch. I'll leave things for a while and concentrate on other facets of the family.
Thanks very much for your help. My sister travelled to Rochdale in the 1960's trying to trace relatives and gave up when she found out how common the Howarth name is in Rochdale, so I do understand the problem.
Kind regards

Thanks, this family does seem to fit into "my" family. Names and occupations fit. John, James and Robert are popular family names. Most of the family worked in the wool industry. :)
-
St Chad's was also the church they used most.
-
One of these days I am going to go to Rochdale,
just out of interest,as St Chads comes up on a regular basis on the boards.
-
Hope you enjoy your visit Radcliff, I visited Rochdale in May 2011 and had an interesting time visiting sites of family significance, including St Chad's, may even have stayed at the public house where my great grandparents had their after wedding drinks and sat on the very same seats in the snug.
Thanks for your help.
I will declare the Look up for John Howarth of Rochdale born 1928 completed.
-
My Dad is John Howarth aged 73 of Sparth bottoms Rochdale and his Father was also John Howarth ... would be interesting to know if there was a link as some of the family lived in castleton
-
St Chad's is the parish church in Rochdale. If you are standing in the town centre admiring the very fine Victorian Town Hall (as you really should https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rochdale_Town_Hall ), you will see St Chad's towering over it at the top of a set of 124 steps . http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/Rochdale/Rochdale/stchad/ .

Hello Lucie- Anne
You have put your request on a completed post.
It would be better to tell us what you know about your grandparents, say names, when they were married, their children ,where they lived etc and put a request on the Lancashire Board and then maybe somebody can help trace your Howarths backwards.
and bear in mind that Castleton used to be the area around Milkstone Rd and Sparth to Sudden. I'm sure your dad remembers the Castle Inn.
Good luck hunting. Sue

Hi Lucie-ann Howarth
My Grandfather was Harry Howarth born September 1883 in Wardleworth, Rochdale, he had a brother John Robert Howarth born 1881, Rochdale, both were christened at St Chads, Rochdale.
Harry and John's father was James Howarth born 1857 Rochdale and mother Esther Travis. James had a brother Robert born 1855 and brother John born 1865.
James's mother was Jane Hardman and father John Howarth born 1828. He died 1865 the year his son John was born. In the 1861 census John and Jane Howarth were living at 35 Manchester Road, (Civil parish: Castleton, Ecclesiastical parish: St Chads), with their children Robert and James and with John's sister Ann. John and Ann were involved in the wool industry.
I hope this information helps you see if there is any connection.
My grandfather Harry, emigrated to New Zealand in 1926.
Cheers aber
