Title: Glasgow Newspapers 1915
Post by: Nodrogw on Thursday 18 October 12 13:12 BST (UK)
My great uncle was Ross A Tollerton VC. I didn't know him of course because he died in 1931, 11 years before I was born. However, I did know his brother Alexander Anderson Tollerton who was married to one of my grandmother's sisters. The biography of Ross Tollerton states that he was presented with the VC in Glasgow in May 1915 by King George V. Can anyone tell me if there are any newspapers which reported the event, and which may contain photographs of the presentation.

Unlike today, newspapers of the period you are looking at didn't really carry photographs, just text and a line drawings sometimes for adverts.

The Glasgow Herald is available to view online here http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC

The other papers to also perhaps consider would be The Scotsman and given the award, The Times?

Quote
No. 7281 Private Ross Tollerton, 1st Battalion, The Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders.
For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty on the 14th September, 1914,
at the battle of the Aisne. He carried a
wounded Officer under heavy fire as far as
he was able into a place of greater safety >
then, although himself wounded in the head
and hand, he struggled back to the firing
line, where he remained till his Battalion
retired, when he returned to the wounded
Officer and lay beside him for three days,
until'they were both rescued.

Hi,
Until a few days ago I had a copy of the Glasgow Herald showing Your Uncle Ross receiving his medal from the King. Unfortunately I have stored it somewhere safe and can't find it.

There are a number of articles in the Scotsman both about the medal presentation and a presentation made by the Burgh of Irvine where he stayed. There is also a reference to a court case between his stepmother and widow following his death.
