Title: BEWLEY family
Post by: RachelLouise on Saturday 20 October 12 11:40 BST (UK)
Hi, I'm researching the Bewley family,  I've got down to Alexander Bewley b.1817 in Ireland he then moved over the Calne.
He has a grandchild by the name of Thomas J Bewley b.1894 and d.1961 in Trowbridge; I'm wondering whether anyone can help me to find who his parents are as he lived with his grandparents in Quemerford from a young age.

This is what I have so far:
John Bewley b.1792 -> Alexander Bewley b.1817 Ireland -> Mary J Bewley b.1866, William J Bewley b.1851, John Bewley b.1853, Matilda Bewley b.1849, Alfred Bewley b.1855, Georginia/Georgenna Bewley b.1859, James Bewleyb.1868, Mary A Bewley b.1844 (one of these then went on to have)-> Walter Bewley b.1889, Herbert Bewley b. 1891, Thomas J Bewley b.1894 (Thomas went on to have) -> Dennis John Bewley b.1929 (owned DJBewleys funeral directors in melksham), Cyril Bewley b.1922

Can anyone shed any light on this family for me please? Thankyou

The birth certificate or the marriage certificate of Thomas J Bewley might tell you his father's name, but I would hazard a guess that he (and his siblings) were illegitimate?

So, mother Mary J Bewley (b1885), father unknown?

Hi,
I take it you have looked at the 1891 census for a Mary Bewley, married to a John A Bewley in Calne ?

Albert Norris marries Mary J Bewley in Calne in 1904.

Then seven years later, Albert is a widower and he has a step son called Thomas J Bewley.

Struggling to find a birth for Thomas and wondered if he was actually James Thomas G Bewley born Q4 1893. No maiden name for mother listed.

I agree the Children are probably the Sons of Mary Ann c 1865

I also have a problem with Alexander 1817 born Ireland having a Father JOHN c 1792.

Marriage on Familysearch has his Father as William and Mary Anns as John.
I think in the 1871 Census John Bewley should be Father in Law not Father.

Christening;
MARY BAWLY, 02 August 1829, Cherhill, Wiltshire
Parents JOHN/JANE
Siblings;
EDWARD Buley 09 May 1824
JANE Buley 11 Nov 1827
JOHN Buley 15 March 1835

Jane BEWLEY Married James BUSHELL 1850, Calne, Wilts, Father JOHN (F/S.org)

1841 Census
Calne, Wiltshire
HO107/1168/4/Calne
John BEWLEY, 50, Ag Lab
Edward, 15, Ag Lab
MARY, 11
John, 9 (could be 6 from image)
Jane 1827 is living away from Home and working in 1841.

OOPS 1861 John Bewley c 1790 Calne is down as Father in Law to Alexander.

I rest my case ;D

John BEWLEY Married Rachael REEVES 08 April 1811, Calne, Wiltshire;
Children;
JAMES 14 Oct 1812, Buried 21 May 1820
WILLIAM 1816

So it looks to me that John was Married twice to Rachael and then a Jane.

1851 Census John is under John BOWEY, born 1791 Calne,Wilts (Son John age 16 is with him)

Burial;
RACHAEL Bewley 30 December 1818 Calne, Wiltshire

+ a WM Bewley 23 Jan 1819 (may be Alexanders Father)

Hi RachelLouise

Alexander Bewly born 1817 was the son of William Bewley born 1794 who married Sarah from Donegal in Ireland, she died 1827.
William Bewley was born 1794 in Calne and was the son of Edward Bewley b1761 married to Mary Alexander hence the Christian name of Alexander Bewley which came from his Grandmother's maiden name.

William Bewley born 1794 went to Ireland, reason unknown.  Perhaps military?

Alexander Bewley(b 1817) was married twice:
First marriage to Anne Messiter, children Sarah Ann (or Sarah Annie) b1841 - Mary Ann b1844
Second marriage to Mary Ann Bewley born 1829, daughter of John Bewley of Cherhill Wiltshire.  Their children were Matilda Jane b1849 - William John b1851 - John H b1853 - Alfred Henry b1856 - Georgina b1858 - d1937 - Kate Ellen b1860 - Mary Jane b1865 d 1911(known as Polly)
-James b1868

I think that Thomas J Bewley b 1895 is Thomas Giddings Bewley illegitimate son of Mary Jane(Polly) Bewley.  I have a photograph of Thomas as a baby with his mother and Grandparents, plus other Bewley family members.  Mary Jane Bewley had 4 other children Mary Ann Bewley b 1882 - Henry Bewley b1884 - Walter Bewley Neville b1888 (He dropped the Neville surname in later life) - Herbert Henry Bewley b1881 - obviously Thomas in 1894
The information is from the Calne Parish Registers.

Mary Jane Bewley married Albert Haines Norris march Qtr 1904 in Calne.  She died 20th February 1911 in Calne

Alexander seemed to have a habit of housing his grandchildren, see 1881 census where he has Albert Smart(16) living with him, the son of Sarah Ann Bewley.

Hi Trish1120

Thanks for message re Rachel Louise.

Noticed on one of your postings, where you wondered if William who died  23 Jan 1819 may be Alexander's father.  This William was not Alexander's father.

Alexander's father William died in 1872.  William appears with wife Mary on 1841 to 1871 census returns.  Mary is Alexander's step mother.  William married twice, first Sarah and then Mary.

1841 census for William Bewley interesting. I think that the Mary Ann Bewley is his mother(nee Alexander), but would be interested to know what relationship the Sarah Bewley on the 1841 census is to William.

Hi all,

Thanks for all this information and help.
This research is for my fiancé' family, turns out his auntie has already done a tree but I'm not sure if it goes this far back. I'll have a look when I'm home.

Hi Christiana
You said that you have found Alexander's father in Ireland, and his wife who died, but you haven't said who they were.  Who do you have as Alexander's parents?  Do you know what Alexander's father was doing in Ireland - we have a few ideas.  By the way, which of Alexander's children are you descended from.  Janet

I try not to write too much on public sites, but I am from his son, John. I have his parents as William and Rachael, and have family documents that have been passed down. I have Alexanders first wife as Sarah who is not related to me. Found out there was also another Bewley family in Cherhill which is the next village, who were not blood related to him but he married in to.

Hi
Thanks for that, Alexander's first wife was Ann, and his second wife was Mary Ann (your line of descent) Alexander's parents were William and Sarah.  Hope this helps.  Janet

Sorry but I have documentation that says otherwise with certificates as well. Then I have the Bewleys back to 1126. Yours must be a different one

Hi Christina

I think that we are talking about the same Alexander Bewley, born in Ireland - 1817.  In adult life he was a Wheelwright in England, but just to check is this the Alexander Bewley that is your 3XGreat Grandfather?

Thanks
Good, we have now established that we are both talking about the same Alexander Bewley.  Alexander's first wife was Ann, and they had 2 children.  Alexander's second wife was Mary and they had 9 children.  This is where we differ, as Alexander's parents were William and Sarah, and of interest William had a brother who was married to a Rachel.  So your documentation is therefore of great interest to me.

You have done well to trace the Bewleys back to 1126, as I have only traced back to 1713.

Janet

Hi,

My name is George Bewley. My grandfather is Alan Bewley. I'm trying to research our family tree and wondered if there's anything information you can share? My grandad often talks about growing up in Calne with his uncles; Leonard Bewley, Wilfred Bewley, Douglas Bewley and Reginald Bewley. He has also mentioned the undertakers under the Bewley family.

Hi George

Great to see your post. I’m Reginald's grandson and his sons Reginald (Known as Pat) I remember as a kid visiting him in Calne we used to visit all his brother and sisters houses.
