Title: Michigan: Mike Koski b. 20 Dec 1882
Post by: Koski on Saturday 20 October 12 12:08 BST (UK)
Hello there

We are doing family research from Finland to my mother-in-law. She is very keen to know something about his grandfather's life in the USA. His grandfather Mikael (called Mikko in Finland) Anselm Rajakoski b. 20th Dec 1882 Parkano left from Parkano through Canada to USA in 1907. We have found out from the Parkano emigrants site that Mikko's father Iisakki Anselmi Rajakoski b. 30.10.1857 Parkano had already travelled to USA in 1906. Later on Julius (Mikko's brother) travelled in April 1910 to USA.

A lot of Finns has shorten their last name in the States so has Mike and Julius. Both have used Koski/Kaski in the States. Would be really great to locate possible familymembers of Mike & Julius still living in Michigan. Would love to know about their lives and if it is known in the family what has happened totheir  father Isaac. Found Mike from 1910 Census (widow, wife in Finland died 1909 as well as daughter Heili), again 1940 Census (married to Signe Koski b. 1894 Finland)

Info found below in more detail:
We found from the FamilySearch.org site the Draft registration card for World War II, 1942:
Name: Mike Anselm Koski
Born: 20th Dec 1882 in Turuun Laani Finland (exact correct birth date as Maija's grandfather)
Age in Years 59
Place of Residence: Chatham Alger Mich

and also from United States Census, 1940:
Mike Koski, River Township, Alger, Michigan, US
age: 57
marital status: Married
birthplace: Finland
est. birth year: 1883
Household:
head: Mike Koski (57)
wife: Signe Koski (46)
lodger: Andrew Salmi

And then we found about Mikko's brother Julius Koski that he had died in Iron, Michigan in 13th May 1974. I have also his social security number: 369-05-6130.
birth date: 28 April 1889
est. age at death: 85
Last residence: Iron, Michigan
Zip Code of last residence: 49935
Birth date is complete match so I believe this is the correct Julius eventhough not been able to find him in any census records.

How could I find more information about their families? Is it possible to use the social security number in order to find more about Julius life?

Many thanks for any tips & hints you can provide us how to dig deeper!

Cheers,
Henna and Ville

Thanks Sandra.

Not sure though it's the same Julius Koski. The one I'm looking for was born in Finland 28 April 1889.
What you reckon?

Cheers,
Henna

Hi Henna,

Yes, can see the SSDI record given that birth date - the obituary obviously has an error in the dates they are reporting - gives the age 85 years which would make the birth 1889 and not the reported 13 May 1874.  ???

Thanks Sandra. That was quick.  ;D

Any possibility that you can track Mike also? Mikko Anselm or Mike Anselm Koski, b. 20 Dec 1882. In 1940 Census he was resident in Chatham, Alger, Michigan.

Asking the above question because someone called Julius Raja-Koski of Trout Creek filed a petition for naturalization in Michigan.

Ironwood daily Globe - TUesday April 8th 1941

J W Held, examiner for the US Naturalization division was at the court house in Ontonagon to assist residents requiring American Citizenship. Julius above had filed a petition.

The family name used to be Rajakoski in Finland. Seems that Julius and Mike both used just Koski as last name in the US.

What does a petition for naturalization means?

Thank you. Sandra you are incredible  ::)

Basically, Julius was drafted to WW1. Where can I lookup did he end up to war?
Also is it known that he got the citizenship if he had his day in the Court in April 1941?

Every man of a certain age who wasn't already in the military was required to register for the draft.  It doesn't mean they were necessarily drafted or ever served in the military.

Thanks for clarification. Makes sense know. I found the registration card for Mike Anselm Koski for WW2 when he was 59 years old in 1942, and wonder what was that all about.

This gives more information about the WWII draft registration cards available to the public (covering older men) - https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/United_States_World_War_II_Fourth_Draft_Registration_Cards_(FamilySearch_Historical_Records)

The 1930 census has a space for whether men were veterans, so that could give a clue if someone served in WWI.

Thanks Shelly.

Have not been able to spot Mike Koski from the 1920s or 1930's census. Then he suddenly appears again in Chatham Alger County MI in 1940 Census. He had been married to Signe b. 1894. Where have they been married and why they are not spotted in between? Thought first that perhaps they gone to Soviet Russia but as found them in 1940 Census, don't believe it. Was it common to those times after work somewhere else? Perhaps Canada?

I found Signe Saari b. 1894 from United States Census, 1930," Signe Saari in household of Lafayette Crowley, Grosse Pointe, Wayne, Michigan. Could this be the same Signe who is married to Mike Koski according to 1940 Census? Couldn't find any information about marriage thought have not find any other Signe b. 1894 emigrated to the States from Finland.

Hi Sandra. Took a look for this as amazed I have not spotted this.
But noticed that birth year is 1887. My mother-in-law's grandfather was born 1882.
Is it common that the ages varies so much in the Census data?

They can vary - people were known to make themselves younger or older. The middle initial was interesting on that entry, just posted so that we know its there and we have looked at it as a possibility.  ???

I assume Mike and Signe have both stayed in Michigan State area. Is it possible to obtain through Vital Records for their marriage if I don't know the exact year or place they have married nor do I know Signe's maiden name. Also I would like to try to obtain the death record for both of them, eventhough I'm not sure when and where. What would be the correct place to apply those records and is it possible to apply if the facts are not known?
