Can anyone please tell me why my ancestors surname changed from Thomas 1700's his son became Richard 1736 and his son became Ellis 1766
-
That'll be the patronymic naming system at work.
Richard Thomas (son of Thomas XYZ) sons will be called:
Ellis Richard, who son in turn will be:
ABC Ellis.
