Title: Marglay, Kirkpatrick Durham
Post by: collier19 on Wednesday 07 November 12 13:38 GMT (UK)
I have some old records that I'm trying to read and the name is William Dickson of Marglay - at least that what it looks like! It refers to a 20 shilling 'estate' (more of a farm I think) which is near the river Urr. Can anyone help - at least if I get the name right, I can research it a bit more.

Ian, what a difference a vowel can make! Searching for ref to William Dickson at Margley (instead of Marglay) brings up numerous references  :)

That's brilliant - I'll try Margley instead.

Hi collier19

Don't know what you are trying to research so can't comment on how to twist those search words! However, I started with just -  William Dickson of Margley - without " " or key word search etc., and it brought up some key links to start with  :)

Good luck with Ian's revised spelling!

Thanks for this - I used Marglay because that was how it was spelled in an old document that I have - and I've also now found it shown as Marglay on an old map. However, I should have thought about possible changes of spelling - put it down to a senior moment!
