Annie Wakefield, born Nottingham (Alfred St according to the 1911 census) c 1870, was living with William Sills in the 1891 census as his wife. There does not appear to have been a marriage but they had 2 children, William Arthur Wakefield 15 Dec 1888 and Emily Wakefield 15 Feb 1891.
On 9 Oct 1894 Annie married Harry Sansom (born c1862 Mansfield, Notts) at Basford Register Office. She gave no father's name. He is described as a general labourer, though in 1901 he describes himself as a private soldier on furlough.
They had 8 children together,and in 1901 they are at 6 Jenner Sreet, Vernon Place with Emily and other children but no William Arthur.
In 1911 they are living at 4 Friar lane, Lenton. Harry is not at home and Annie describes herself as married (20 years) and head of household. Emily is shown as Emily Sansom again but again there is no sign of William Arthur.
Does anyone know what happened to William Arthur?

There is a William Arthur SILLS b 1889 Nottingham, in the 1911 census. I think this could be the man you are looking for as there is no birth registration under that surname.

Free BMD has a marriage for William A Sills 1912 to Ada Watson and a death in 1919 East Retford.

I couldn't find the William Arthur Sills you mentioned on an ancestry search - but there he is on FindMyPast! Could well be him - a boarder in a Smith household - as the details fit.
But still can't find him in 1901.
The E Retford one obviously needs further investigation but isn't the area I'd expect to find him.

There is a William A Sills at 1901 3182 / 9 / 9
He is born 1889 and with parents Joseph and Emily. The parents are both 60 yrs :-\
They may be William snr's parents

I had wondered about them.
Joseph and Emily Sills in the 1881 census have a 16 year old son, William Alfred so it does seem to fit.

I have found reference in The Nottm Evening Post (18 Aug 1917) to a William Arthur Sills being charged with the attempted murder of his wife.
The age fits, 28/9 in July 1917.
A further report in November 1917 says he has been certified insane.
Would he have been detained in Rampton at that time does anyone know?
If it is him the 1919 death in E Retford would then make sense wouldn't it?

Yes, thanks for that, larkspur, I did know it opened in 1912 but wasn't sure whether all the certified insane were sent there or whether there were other places in Notts.
If anyone has access to the whole newspaper account I'd be delighted to hear more details of the trial.

Just to confirm for anyone interested that William Arthur Sills did die in Rampton in 1919.
