Title: Who was Emma Lythell?
Post by: suttontrust on Tuesday 13 November 12 22:52 GMT (UK)
I know that Emma Lythell married in Hull in the first quarter of 1881.  She later gives her place of birth as Landbeach, Cambridgeshire c. 1861.  I can find her on the 1871 census for Stretham, Cambs (RG 10 1602 p18) where she and her brother William are the "step daughter" and "step son" of the Sennett family.  I can find a likely birth for William in 1856, but no birth for Emma.  I can't work out a relationship between the Lythells and the Sennetts, who have children older than the Lythells so they are not from a former marriage.
Can someone save me from having to get the marriage certificate to find Emma's antecedents?

We cant be sure but everything seems to add up.

Maybe she liked a much simpler name ;D

1871 Census Mary Sennitt is born c 1836 Wardy Hill which fits with Baptism.
1881 c 1834 Coveney

John STUKENS Married  Elizabeth MARTIN 09 Aug 1830 Coveney (FreeREG)
Has Witnesses names.
Siblings of Aurelia are on FreeREG are;
JOHN 22 Jan 1832
WILLIAM 02 March 1834

This is interesting;

1851 Census
Wardyhill,
Coveney, Cambridgeshire

Eliza SUT, 1, Daug

Someone has corrected name to LUTT for Elizabeth and Eliza

Baptism;
SARAH, 26 April 1830, St Peter and Vincula, Coveney, Cambridgeshire
Illegitimate
Parents, John STUKINS and Elizabeth MARTIN
Abode Wardlow Hill, Fathers occp Labourer

Fits with them marrying 09 Aug 1830 as posted earlier.

Now more confusion;
Marriage Reg;
William STUKINS, Dec 1852, Ely, 3b 1235
Sarah MARTIN on same page

William/Sarah could be the Witnesses to this Marriage as Sarah would be the Sister of Amelia/Aurelia/Mary (or whoever she is!)

Marriage;
31 March 1862, St Martins, Witcham, Cambridgeshire
Henry SENNITT of Witcham Parish, Widower, Labourer, Father WILLIAM Sennitt, Farmer
Amelia LYTHELL of Witcham Parish, Widow, Father John STUKINS Labourer

I'm confused (nothing new there!).  Mary Stukins married John Lythell in 1854 in Ely.  There's a Mary Stukins baptised 1825 in Coveney, parents William and Christiana, siblings Joseph and Robert.  I can find a Mary Ann Stukins in Cambridge in 1841, with Joseph (the page is wrongly indexed on Ancestry but there seem to be no other Stukins's).  I think there's nothing for it but to get Emma's birth certificate.  Drat.

An update.  I bought the birth certificate of Emma Lithell, born 5/12/1860 in Chittering Fen, Waterbeach.  That fits with at least one of the censuses.  But it seems that she was illegitimate.  Mother Mary Lithell.  I've tried the censuses (Emma married in 1881) and the IGI but can't find anything useful.
