My 2nd great grand father died 22nd mar 1881 just before the census was done. he was working as a servant at 23 carlton street sub-district mount pleasant Liverpool.
is there anyway i can check the census for the address he was working at to see who he was working for.
-
what is your great grandfathers name,
-
His name was William Simmons
-
Looks like 23 Carlton Street was a boarding house in 1881. Daniel Courtney was the boarding house keeper, a widower, age 60, born in Ireland. All the boarders were born in Ireland. No servants.
-
Thank you for the information. was there a person called E EDGE. this person was present at william's death in the royal infirmany.
-
Nobody of that name. Looking at the census again, the boarding house keeper could be Daniel Courhey. You could take a look yourself. One of the boarders was James Power, age 30, born in Ireland - you could use that to search if you can't search by address. You can search 1881 census for free at familysearch.org

Hi
Thanks found it. The only thing that i can think of, that william left his wife and family and moved into 23 carlton st. his family were living at 6 green st.
-
Did he die at Carlton Street?
-
Just wondering if I found the correct Carlton Street beacuse it is in Scotland Ward, not Mount Pleasant, but it is the only one I can find.
-
Hi
He died in the royal infirmary. carlton st and green st are not far from each other.
-
Carlton Street and Green Street are in St Martin sub district.
The Royal Infirmary is Mount Pleasant sub-district.
In 1881 there is an Elizabeth Edge who is a probation nurse living in the Nurses Institute in Dover Street which is close to the Infirmary.
There is also an Estha Edge who is a district nurse, living with other district nurses in Eldon Place, St Martins district.
There is also an Elizabeth with a husband and family and another Elizabeth married but living alone Milk Street - Dale St district.
You can check these on FS.
Were your Simmons family in Green Street before 1881? They may have been boarding in Carlton Street .
-
Hi
They are from cornwall, i think they were on the 1871 of wales.
-
Elizabeth simmons remarried in 1882 st martins liverpool
-
Yes I saw that they were and that only the youngest child was born in Liverpool.
I was just trying to say that he may not have left his family - there could have been a reason for that other address.
Is the Carlton Street address shown on his death certificate as his employment or address?
-
it shows 1 when and where died = royal infirmary. 5 occupation = servant 23 carlton street
-
It may be that then that he was employed as a servant there but they didn't have a servant there at the time of the census.
-
I find it a bit strange his wife wasn't with him at his death or her name on his death certificate.
-
That's something sadly you will never know.
His wife had young children so that is one reason - also it may be that one of those nurses was there are the time of death and was the informant.
However, as you say, they may have parted. :-\
-
one more thing i find strange, on the 1881 census elizabeth simmons was down as married when william died a couple weeks before the census was done.

Just to say that I can see a William and Elizabeth born Cornwall in Wales in 1871 living in Cardiganshire. If this is the one you mean, I don't think this is your family.
