Title: AVG Tuneup - unable to get rid of pop up.
Post by: brushbroomstick on Monday 19 November 12 11:14 GMT (UK)
I run AVG Internet Security. I recently accepted a free AVG Tuneup. This showed several things that had been found then it said my one day trial had elapsed and I now keep getting a pop up asking me to buy  Tune up - which I don't want -and whatever I do I cannot get rid of this.

Hello Irene :D
Have you gone into Control Panel> Add and Remove> then looked to see it the AVG tune up is there and delete it?

I think you will need to restart your computer after this.

Sorry if you have already done this.

Trouble is if its in your registry you cant always get it off from there unless you know what your looking for and not advisable unless you know what your doing.

Someone else may have a quicker solution though.
regards Margaret :D

I've just looked there and only AVG internet Security is there - no AVG tuneup.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

There is this guide  http://www.wikihow.com/Uninstall-AVG-PC-Tuneup  depends how computer know how you are as to whether you dare try it. Perhaps there is someone on here who knows if it is safe to do.

Thank you for that. I am not too confident to try this myself but my son will be home for Christmas in a few weeks so I think I will let him do it.

Just out of interest, I purchased the multiple license 2 year version of AVG which included the Tuneup 2011 package. I run it at least once a month and it certainly clears up a lot of garbage build up on my system. I have had no problems with at all, and think that it certainly is worth the price I paid.

I only purchased the one year 2012 version. I didn't know the clean up was included in the 2 year package or I may have purchased that instead.

I have the current AVG Internet Security and still have the same situation as you.
I think it was caused by my choice of running the free 30 day trial and within that period I elected to purchase and I dont think that AVG have resolved the 'glitch'that has arisen when someone does this.
Every time I turn on the PC there is a popup Trojan warning from AVG which I delete.
I think this is a 'Come on' which AVG have put there to frighten the people who have done the 30 day trial in order to secure a sale.
I have been in touch with AVG who dont seem able to resolve it.
This is the last message I got from them;
Dear Joe,
....................................................................

Thank you for your email.

To fix this problem, we might have to try something different with the Rescue CD. However, the version of the Rescue CD you have is an older version, and doesn't have the right utility.

Please download and burn a new copy of the CD, using the first parts of the guide linked below:

http://www.avg.com/au-en/51.num-2720#num-2720

Once you have done this, please let us know, and we can provide instructions on how to fix the problem for good.

Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any further questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best Regards,
............................................................
I hope this gives you some hope of reolution.
Joe

Thanks Joe
I accepted the free AVG tuneup but when it showed how many problems were found I got a message saying my trial time had elapsed and I don't think I even had these problems resolved.
I will wait until my son comes home for Christmas and get him to try and sort it.

I wonder if there really were that many problems, or if it was just a way of getting you to buy the full version? Strange how these programs always find problems on a trial run.  ;D

I bought it this last weekend, must say that so far after the installation my computer is running faster and more responsively.

Aye Roger ....... got to agree that my AVG is quicker and seamless so no problems there at all ... it's just that I regularly (say twice a day) that I get this pop up .... does'nt worry me and I can live with it OK.
My attitude is that AVG put it there as a 'catch all' for people who have taken on the free trial and completed it only to find that the trial reported several problems that require fixing and then telling them that they should purchase the full version in order to fix them.
Whilst I like the full version very much I think it is a pretty poor way of  'grooming' potential customers.

My monthly mag 'computer shopper' is currently offering AVG Antivirus 2013 foc.
(Download then enter a coupon code)
Anyone want it, I will pm full details to first one who contacts me.
Not required by myself as I have a full security program by others.

Can you take a snapshot of the pop up so we can see what you are getting?

Why not do a search of AVG on the infected computer, checking on drive C.
Delete all files containing the 'AVG' name.
(I usually left click named entry then right click to highlite delete.)

Thanks for replying ...the only other AVG I have is the FREE AVG Anti-Virus and that seems to be working OK

Shall "live with it" for the time being !

I use XP.
What I would do is (offline) stop all instances of AVG, uninstall them, then delete all AVG files from the hard drive, and references in the registry (Start/run/regedit).
Then I'd re-install the original AVG.

For anyone who is used to fiddling about "under the bonnet" it should be fairly straightforward!

But in my short experience of it this does seem to be an excellent product, well worth buying.

I have always used AVG virus protection and I have bought the Tune Up - I can't believe that all the whirring and noises on the l o n g start up has all gone.

I think when our son visits he tends to add things and use whilst home.  I found a few things starting up each time that I didn't know I had  ::)

Start up quiet and quick.

All sorted - I am happy with the product so far.

Hi Irene, i also had the same problem and it was bugging the hell out of me, i had already remove it via add/remove control panel but it kept popping up, the easiest solution i found was to download the program again and try to run it... at this stage the AVG program says you already have AVG tune up would you like to Uninstall which I did and it completely removed the program.

Hope this helps.

I got this message on 15 January 2013 after expressing firmly that it was an AVG problem and that I had spent far too much time trying to fix it in accordance with their numerous useless advices.

This was successfully accomplished.
My 2 year contract with AVG concludes in July 2013 and I am very seriously going to look very carefully at other competitors.
After 15 months of generally being'stuffed around' with something that was easily fixed once 'they'found their problem' by getting into my PC.

What I would do is start another thread asking for an alternative to AVG!
I use a combined antivirus/firewall program which is expensive, Norton 360.
I am sure others will suggest alternatives, some free whilst others cost.
Hope you all get sorted.
