Title: Daniel O'Brien
Post by: GeriK64 on Monday 19 November 12 13:34 GMT (UK)
Hello,
Can anyone help, I'm trying to trace the marriage record or indeed any record of my great grandfather Daniel O'Brien, he married Elizabeth Walsh. I have always thought they came from the Quay Westport. Daniel was killed in Dakota USA.  Elizabeth returned to Westport and married in 1910 to Thomas Lambert.  Daniel would have been born around 1874. I did contact St Mary's RC church, they were helpful but couldnt find any trace of Daniel.  :-\

Any idea when he left Ireland? Have you tried to find a record of his arrival in U.S.? found him in any census records? there may be clues  :)

Hi Aghadowey,

Thanks for your reply  :), I'm now beginning to think that they married when in USA, both his children were born 1901,1905, in Philadelphia. When he was killed in the Lead gold mine  my grt grandmother came home to Westport , she married again in 1910 I think, so he must have died between 1905 and 1910.  When I have been searching US arrivals I just presumed they had sailed together, but I'm now searching arrivals separtely.

There's a possible marriage for Thomas and Elizabeth showing up in Westport district on the BMD Index - these are the refernces :

  Name: Thomas Lambert
  Registration district: Westport
  Event type: Marriage
  Quarter and year: Oct-Dec 1909
  Volume :   4 / Page :   215

Same details listed for a Lizzie Walsh.

You can use these details to order a marriage cert from the GRO - see :

this appears to be the family on the 1911 census near Westport town. Thomas and Lizzie both Mayo born, married one year, plus two O'Brien children born in the USA, and one Lambert child born Co. Mayo.

  Lambert / O'Brien household, Cloonmonad townland (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Mayo/Westport__Urban/Cloonmonad/749078/)

Irish BMD Index is on Familysearch - see :

   Introduction to Irish Records (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,442233.0.html)

here are links to the Index records for Thomas & Lizzie:

  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYD3-B22
  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FYD3-9PL

I've had a look for likely births in the Westport area for both Daniel and Elizabeth. About three possibles for Elizabeth/Lizzie, but nothing seems to fit for for Daniel...  maybe he was not from Westport, but somewhere else in Mayo, or another part of Ireland ?

p.s. have you located Daniel and/or Lizzie on the 1900 US census ?

age for Daniel is a little 'out' (age 23 so c1877), but think I may see Daniel & Lizzie as 'OBrian' in 1900 in Philadelphia Ward 38, Pennsylvania ?

According to that census return, they married 1899, arrived in the US 1895.

given such a common surname, there could be other Daniel & Lizzie O'Briens in the area, but they showed up in the city you mentioned for births of the children - though it might be worth checking out.

The occupation for this Daniel seems to be 'moulder'

Was it in one of the 'Dakota' states (i.e. North or South) that your Daniel died ?
Seems to be quite a distance away from Philly...

There also seems to be various counties, towns and cities named Dakota.

Yip, your asking the same questions I have been thinking for some time.  My grandmother Marie was one of the children on the 1911 census that you kindly mentioned, but she was a twin and the other child is buried somewhere in South Dakota she was named Florence. So from what i can gather she was born in 1901 in Phily and moved to South Dakota.  Daniel was killed in a mining accident in Lead, Lawrence County, South Dakota. :-\

Hi I was doing my family tree and I found a Thomas Lambert who would have been my uncle (I think) on checking the census he was living in Westport and he had 2 stepchildren named O'Brien you have answered that query for me as it ties in with the dates I have.

That's very interesting was she originally Elizabeth Walsh and he was my great uncle, out of 14 children born I have found 11 and you have filled in the blanks for Thomas, they were both widows as his wife died in 1906
