Dear Roni,

Not a lot of information I am afraid but I looked at the last eight census records for the UK and came up with the following but bear in mind that the census lists the occupants not necessarily the actual owner.
All relate to the Hall unless otherwise stated.

1841 - Augustus Hilliary
1851 - Henry I. Christian
1861 - William Poole / Betty Fletcher / John Nicolson / Mary Allwork / John Poole
1871 - John R Beadle
1881 - Joseph Bell (Gardens) / Benjamin Wood (Hall Farm)
1891 - No record
1901 - John Mcdonald & John Bell (Ewanrigg Farm) / John Lee ( Hall Farm)
1911 - William Kitson Ellwood / Joseph Bell (Gardens)

Regards,

fifthwheel

This is very interesting. The 1861 census has John Nicholson as the head of Ewanrigg Hall. His daughter was Louisa Jane who had the great misfortune of meeting and marrying one of my ancestors, Leonard Chambers Collins. He treated her very badly, conned her out of her inheritance and left the family destitute. They were divorced and he died in a Wormwood Scrubs prison where he was serving 10 years hard labour. John Nicholson wa the proprietor of a coal mine. They are not living there in 1871, I think by then he had died.

This does not help your search but it just shows that it is a small world.

Doris Riley who lives in Ewanrigg Hall's gardens has written a book on it.
THE RISE AND FALL OF EWANRIGG HALL.

Wowza, Died a few months after marriage? Thanks for the info. Will find the records. She would be my 3rd great Aunty. Means my records are messed up as i have death in 1915 (i think). Would anyone know how to find the info on how the Nicholsons came to head the house. Could they of bought it or would it be through blood or marriage.

Are you on ancestry, if so you can look up Leonard Chambers Collins in my tree. There are two divorce cases to look at which are very interesting but quite sad. There is a bit more about him at the end of the thread regarding Reverend William Bookless.

What a poor girl. A wonderful start to her life then she meets and marries this monster. I was hoping that she did die in 1915, at least she would have had a happier end. To die the same year as her second marriage, not fair. Leonard contracted syphillis, no doubt he gave this to Louisa which may then have been the cause of her demise.

Hi there, send me a Private Message with your email address and I shall send an invite to the tree. Payment is the satisfaction of thinking that you know more than someone else and can help them. However, the benefit of Rootschat is that you soon find that you know less than someone else and that they are wiling to help you.

Thank you  so so much. This will mean so much not only to me but to my aunty. She is following this and is the gate keeper to all our family history. All her info stopped just before the nicholsons so this will help.

Just got the death certificate for Louisa Jane. The poor girl died of alcoholism and bronchitis at the age of 31. So the monster drove her to drink. She died the same year as her horrible ex husband. Just shows that money does not equal happiness.

Hi. My Grandmother was Annie Greenhow Nicholson, born in 1860. She lived at Ewanrigg Hall and I think her father, my Great Grandfather, was John Nicholson. Her name is not mentioned in your list of children. She married Anthony Blackstock Dalzell of Liverpool. I'd be grateful for any further information. I have what I believe is a photo of her. Does anyone have any further information on the Nicholson family?

This is all very exciting. I have a photo of John Nicholson that was posted by another Roots chat member. I shall reply in more detail later when I have time. Your Annie must be the sister of my Louisa. What a poor sad life she had.

I don't think Annie had a horrible life like Louisa did. She and A B Dalzell lived a fairly comfortable life as A B was owner of a ship's chandler or fitters business in Liverpool. They had 5 children, 3 boys & 2 girls. The youngest, a girl, (another Annie I think) died aged 14. My father. John, emigrated to Australia & hence I am Australian!

I am just looking at the 1911 census. AB calls himself a ship store merchant. They are living on Breck/Beck road. Annie seemed to have died in 1925.

Yes, she died in 1925. I have letters written by her daughter to my father as their mother was dying. I think A B died the next year. We have a large photo of a woman we think might be Annie but there is no identification on it.

AB died 12th March 1926. Do you know that they called their house Ewanrigg. He left a will for £8269 with the executor being Evelyn Mary Dor lisa Taylor, wife of Edmund Collins Taylor.

Evelyn Taylor was dad's sister married th "Teddy" Taylor. I have met a son, Peter, now deceased & his wife, Anne. I didn't know about the will. Quite sizable for the times I would say. I take it you have actually determined that Annie Greenhow Nicholson was really one of John Nicholson's offspring. I have no details of her family connections. My father called our house in Australia, Ewanrigg.

Annie is on the 1861 census with father John Nicholson living at Ewanrigg Hall. She is 9 so was born about 1852. She is living with her mother in Flimby on the 1871 census. Her mother is retired, Annie us shown as being a Lady.  Where does the name Greenhow come from? I can not find this middle name on any documentation.

Annie we baptised 10 sep1851 at Brigham. Father John Nicholson, mother Mary. No mention of Greenhow though.

I have a China mug which I understood is a christening cup with handwriting (beautiful script) Annie Greenhow Nicholson 1860. Hence I assumed that was about the time of her birth. Is there such a thing as a Confirmation cup then? Don't have any ideas about Greenhow.  Name of Mary Greenhow Nicholson in the list previously posted alerted me to enquire about my grandmother, Annie. It's all a mystery .
Title: Re: Ewanrigg Hall Maryport Cumbria
Post by: mientajb on Monday 15 May 17 16:29 BST (UK)
It is a mystery. The Annie who married ABD was definitely born 1851/52. She did have a sister Mary Greenhow born about 1848. I can only think that it was a confirmation cup. Were such things given as presents?
I have looked in other people's family trees and nowhere can I find a Greenhow. The only coincidental thing that I can find is that when they move to Flimby they are next door but one to a George Greenhow.
