Hi,
I am trying to trace the grave location of Henry O'Brien (RC) B. 11/9/1898 d. 30/5/1922. According to family memory his grave, which they used to visit, was in 'Lurgan' (or Lurga) Roscommon - anyone in the family who would have visited are unfortunately deceased now..would anyone know locations of graveyards in that area or advise on approach?...
Looking at maps it may well be Lurga and not Lurgan - as in the 1911 census the family were living around Drumboylan...
Many Thanks
Paul

several townlands named Lurgan in Co. Roscommon - one in Kilronan civil parish, one in Shankill civil parish the the third in Kilcolagh.
The first and third townlands are in Boyle Poor Law Union, so likely near that town, the second near Strokestown.
I'll see if I can locate these townlands on historic maps, c1890s and c1837, these usually show old graveyards.

found these three Lurgan townlands... but no graveyards in any of them that I can see, on either the 1830s or c1890s OSI map - it could be that a later cemetery was created at one of these locations.
Lurgan townland, Kilronan (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,593584,814475,6,7)
Lurgan townland, Kilcolagh (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,576156,792686,6,7)
Lurgan townland, Shankill (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,587102,786036,6,7)

The townland of Lurga is in Tumna civil parish, in the Poor Law Union of Carrick on Shannon. There's also a townland named Lurgaboy, which is in the civil parish of Kilronan.

here is the townland of Lurgaboy (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,591939,812073,6,7), and townland of Lurga (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,594419,805983,6,7), no sign of a graveyard, but this Lurga is near to the village of Battle Bridge. I think there was a church nearby at Tumna... that cropped up in a previous topic

Hi All, Still here...getting back into it again...think I need to go plan a visit. I did contact the local school in Leitrim Town to see if anyone recalled O'Briens living in the area as well as local church...but did not get a reply...the principal of school had replied prior.. and was going to message parents to try help..but am stuck:) There has to be O'Briens buried here, somewhere. Henry O'Brien (senior) died in 1923 according to a note found in my Grandads chest which was only discovered recently (within last few weeks) and I suspect Henry (jnr) who died in 1922 - who had been shot in Belfast - may well be in same grave...

Ahhhh. So they are related to the Gibbons! Still around.
The McCormicks are still around and there are g/stones for these in Kiltoghert Cemetery! OBriens too!
Dolores in the Parish Office would be the one to ask about records, if any!!

wow...Ill check with family.....have you any of O'Briens? ..I did get in contact with Carrick On Shannon parish, years ago...maybe I didn't have enough info...I will try again... I was talking to Fr Brian and May was a volunteer at time..... Strangely on O'Briens I also heard from a relative that my great grandparents grave (Patrick and Sarahs) was 'reused' and others buried there...I did not believe that could be possible, however a friend in Newry recently discovered same and a bit of scandal going on regarding that!!

I also checked roots Ireland and went to National Archives in Dublin re Henry O'Brien (senior) and have a scan of original cert..well record from parish....unfortunately no records of Henrys Dad were recorded. I guessed who they may be be on Ancestry, on all info I had...but unsure if correct. Attached is from roots ...which is essentially same info....dead end.

Well you are very lucky that this RC has some Deaths! http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0152 might get some early stuff.
http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632389#page/77/mode/1up gets Henry/Mary but no more info. (below 3rd X on Page!)

Yup thats the same scan http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632389#page/77/mode/1up gets Henry/Mary but no more info. (below 3rd X on Page!) which I got in Dublin at archives ....it is great that info is online now... wish they had put his fathers name on.... I suppose next port of call is back to parish?....O'Briens in Leitrim/Roscommon were scarce as a family name in those counties....albeit there was another (unrelated - I think anyways) Henry O'Brien there....

You can try

You get the likes of

OK.. was talking to a cousin of a cousin of your cousins, the O'Brien g/stone at Kiltoghert is 100% part of your lot and are 100% connected to the Gibbons!
So, you now have 3 names/dates to look up for Deaths and see who their father was!
The O'Briens are still living in the old homestead!
-
Wow....! That is amazing...I also have found out, tonight, that Sarah is buried in aughrim graveyard in hill street Roscommon (she would be my Grandads Sister). See attached.
-
I really wouldn't know anything of their history...
-
Knew I had connected someone to the OBriens!!
